Abstract

This article aims to analyze students' critical thinking skills of temperature topic through virtual learning at junior high schools. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. This research was conducted at seventh grade of the junior high school in Bandung, West Java. The instruments used is observation. The collected data were analyzed using Transcript Based Lesson Analysis (TBLA) to analyze student’s dialogue. The results indicated that two out of the twelve indicators of critical thinking skills during virtual learning were developed. The two indicators are focusing on questions and the second is asking and answering questions. The low achievement of students' critical thinking skills is due to the limited time on virtual learning. Which is limited, so that teachers often apply learning method through transferring knowledge. Analysis of student activities and dialogue during virtual learning can be a source of teacher’s reflection for making further improvement. Keywords: critical thinking skill, temperature topic, virtual learning. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v22i2.pp305-314

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of STEM-Project Based Learning with learning guides on the Concept of Electrolyte and Non-Electrolyte Solutions on the ability to think of high order students of class X SMA Negeri 3 Palangka Raya. The study used a quasi experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The research sample was 35 students of Class X MIPA 1 as a control class and 36 students of Class X MIPA 5 as an experimental class. STEM-Project Based Learning with learning guides is done using the help of study guides. Data collection of higher order thinking skills is carried out using tests (pretest and posttest) specifically designed to measure higher order thinking skills. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using the t test to compare the increased thinking ability of the kontrol class and the experimental class. The statistical test results obtained that tcount is greater than ttable, that is tcount = 21.74 greater than ttable = 2.032, which shows that the average increase in high order thinking skills of experimental class students is better than the average increase in the ability of thinking of control class students. Thus, it can be concluded that STEM-Project Based Learning with learning guides on the Concept of Electrolyte and Non-Electrolyte Solutions can improve higher order thinking skills. Keywords: electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions, STEM-Project Based Learning, high order thinking. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i3.pp1214-1223

Abstract

Scientific explanation skill is one of the essential skills for students in science learning today. Scientific explanation is a reasoning skill that relates claims, evidence, and reasoning. Students can understand, articulate, and explain scientific phenomena accompanied by evidence and reasoning with scientific explanation skills. However, in reality, students are still lacking in scientific explanation skills. In an effort to improve scientific explanation skills, teaching material is needed to be developed in the form of e-modules. The use of e-modules in learning is expected to train students' thinking skills, one of which is scientific explanation skills. This study aims to determine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of e-modules to improve the scientific explanation skills of junior high school students in science learning. The development of the e-module is carried out in three stages, namely preliminary research, prototyping stage, and assessment phase. The results showed that e-modules were included in the valid, practical, and effective categories. Thus, the e-module can be used and applied to develop science learning outcomes and scientific explanation skills. Keywords: scientific explanation skill, e-module, science learning.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i1.pp34-44
