Abstract

This study aims to obtain a description of student errors in solving algebraic form story problems based on Newman's procedure in junior high school. This type of research is descriptive using a qualitative approach. This research uses Newman's error analysis. The subjects of this study were three students, each of whom had high mathematical ability (ST), medium mathematical ability (SS), and low mathematical ability (SR) selected from class VIII W.R Supratman based on the report card value of mathematics class VII odd semester 2023/2024. The results of this study are as follows: Students with high mathematical ability (ST) tend to make mistakes at the reading stage by not reading the problem completely, especially the symbol "Rupiah," and at the writing/notation (encoding) stage by not writing the conclusion and the symbol "Rupiah". Students with moderate mathematics ability (SS) made mistakes at the comprehension stage by not writing and mentioning the question information completely, the transformation stage by making an incorrect mathematical model, and the writing/notation (encoding) stage by not writing the "Rupiah" symbol. Students with low mathematics ability (SR) made mistakes at almost all stages: reading by not mentioning the Rupiah symbol and not reading the complete problem, comprehension by not writing and mentioning the problem information completely, transformation by making an incorrect mathematical model, process skills with calculation errors, and writing/notation (encoding) by not writing the Rupiah symbol and the correct conclusion. This research shows the importance of understanding the problem thoroughly, making the right mathematical model, and writing complete notations and conclusions in solving mathematical problems, the results of this study are expected to contribute to the improvement of the mathematics learning process, both from the teacher and student side, so as to improve students' mathematical problem solving skills, especially in the material of algebraic form story problems.       Keywords: problem solving errors, math skills, algebraic story problems, newman procedure.

Abstract

Creating a learning environment that supports students' understanding is an important notion in mathematics education (Carpenter & Lehrer, 1999). In this case, it is necessary to have a flow in the learning process. Learning trajectory will help teachers apply models, teaching material strategies and appropriate assessments according to students' thinking stages. The flow of student learning in the development of symbols and their meaning in mathematics can be done through technology and information (Bakker et al., 2003). The purpose of this study is to analyze the understanding of mathematical concepts in high school students using the Pirie-Kieren theory lens. Based on the results of the analysis of student worksheets for groups with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles, they have fulfilled the layer of Piere-Kieren understanding up to the stage/organizing layer. The difference in the results of the worksheets of the students in the three groups of learning styles can be seen in their process of finding ways to arrange the candies/boxes equally.Creating a learning environment that supports students' understanding is an important notion in mathematics education (Carpenter & Lehrer, 1999). Abstract

Learning error can be interpreted as a certain condition marked by errors when someone completes a test. One of the causes of students' mistakes in answering questions is the lack of understanding of the concepts in the material. Research on student errors in solving problems related to set material uses the bibliometric method, which is still rarely done before. This research is indexed from Scholar with 500 articles obtained and extracted in the Publish or Perished (PoP) application. The articles obtained were published from 0 to 2022. The articles with the most article citations with 1837 citations occurred in 2020. After that, it was continued by visualizing the network, the number of cluster items was 10 red, 6 green and 4 blue, overlay and density by using the VOSviewer application. Therefore, it can be concluded that mathematical problem is one of the keywords that is still rarely studied. Keywords: students’ error, mathematics, bibliometric analysis, sets. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i2.pp766-773

Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability of creative problem solving in static fluid materials. The method used in this study is a descriptive method which was carried out at SMAN 4 Luwu, North Sulawesi. The research sample was 36 students. The research data were collected through the provision of creative problem solving tests on static fluid materials given after the learning process was carried out. The data that has been collected is then analyzed using the calculation of the average pretest and posttest and Rasch Analysis. The results of data analysis show that reviewing four indicators, namely fact finding, problem finding, idea finding, solution finding and the highest score is on the fact finding indicator with an average of 67.57 for classes that use creative problem solving. In implementing the creative problem solving learning model, it is necessary to pay attention to the time management allocated so that each implementation can be carried out properly. The creative problem solving learning model can be tested on other materials according to school conditions. Keywords: reative problem solving, static fluids, Rasch analysis.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i3.pp816-823

Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ thinking processes in understanding concepts by considering the variations in mathematical thinking styles. This research is motivated by the finding that students demonstrate different thinking styles and intelligence, which is evident in the distinct ways they represent and design their learning approaches. This study employs a qualitative research method, using interviews based on tasks through the think-aloud method for data collection. The research instrument consists of a written test designed to probe students' thinking processes in understanding mathematical concepts according to the indicators of conceptual understanding used in this study. The researchers used time triangulation techniques to ensure the validity of the research data. The data analysis followed a structured process: data classification, reduction, presentation, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The research subjects comprised three students with different mathematical thinking styles, namely visual, analytical, and integrated, who shared similarly high mathematical ability levels. The findings show that subjects with a visual mathematical thinking style create representations in the form of images, tables, or graphs for each indicator of understanding. Subjects with an analytical mathematical thinking style create representations in the form of verbal sentences or mathematical models that are rich in mathematical symbols and variables. While subjects with an integrated mathematical thinking style create representations in the form of verbal sentences, images, diagrams, mathematical symbols, tables, mathematical models, or graphs. The study concludes that while the type of mathematical thinking style—visual, analytical, or integrated—does not significantly influence the depth of students’ conceptual understanding, it does shape the strategies they employ to construct that understanding. All three students demonstrated the ability to interpret, exemplify, classify, summarize, infer, compare, and explain concepts effectively, a consistency attributed to their shared high level of mathematical proficiency.     Keywords: mathematics, conceptual understanding, mathematical thinking style, cognitive process.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze the mistakes made by students when working on math problems in statistics material. This research was conducted in class VIII SMPN 4 Siak Hulu, with 10 students as research subjects. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive research. Data collection techniques are using tests, and unstructured interviews. The results showed that: 1) there were 4 types of errors, namely conceptual errors by 30%, fact errors by 4%, procedural errors by 14%, and technical errors by 10%; 2) there are 5 indicators discussed related to statistical material, namely indicator 1 (Determining the average value of a data), indicator 2 (Analyzing data), indicator 3 (Determining the median of even data), indicator 4 (Determining the mode value of a data), indicator 5 (Determining the values of the first, second and third quartiles in group data). In the fifth indicator, only 3 out of 10 students were able to answer correctly or 30%, this is the indicator with the lowest percentage of the five indicators; 3) the cause of student errors is the lack of student understanding of the prerequisite material for that solution in order to overcome similar errors, namely by always checking student understanding regarding prerequisite material before starting the lesson and choosing appropriate learning methods and strategies so that students can easily understand the material being taught.. Keywords: students’ error analysis, statistics learning, junior high school students. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i2.pp1827-1838
