Mental representations of 14-15 years old students about the light propagation time. Objectives: The study of students’ representations of physics concepts and phenomena constitutes a central part of science education research, as they play a decisive role in teaching. In the study presented here, we investigate the mental representations of 14-15 years old students about the light propagation time, before they were taught about it in school. Methods: The empirical data was gathered through an interview using three tasks which involved the evaluation of hypothetical situations. The research data included representations that cause difficulty in the comprehension of the position of a light source in relevance to the light propagation time. Findings: Most of students assumed that the identification of the light propagation time is strongly correlated with the large distance between the light source and the receiver. Conclusion: This study concluded that the arrangement of objects in space strongly influences the students’ thinking. Keywords: Light propagation time, mental representations, 14-15 years old students. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v8.i2.201806

Powerpoint assisted problem posing versus STAD model: A comparison study in improving mathematical connection ability. Objectives: The purpose of this study were to determine the differences and the effectivity between Powerpoint Assisted Problem Posing and Student Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) on mathematical connection ability. Methods: The population of this study were 289 students of SMPN 1 Talang year of 2017/2018 class VII semester II. Data of mathematical connection ability were collected by using documentation, tests and observations. Findings: There were significant differences in mathematical connection ability between Powerpoint Assisted Problem Posing and the STAD model (t calc=5.287 > ttable=1.960). Conclusions: Powerpoint Assisted Problem Posing Model is more effective than STAD model (t calc=5.287 > ttable=1.645 and sig. 0.000) in improving mathematical connection ability. The effectiveness of the inclusive education model for students with special needs on cognitive learning achievement. Objectives: This research aims to analyze the influence of the inclusive education model in the form ofthe regular class with additional instruction outside the classroom on cognitive learning achievement of elementary school students in Lampung Province. Methods: Samples consist of 35 fifth grade elementary school students which were randomly selected from a population of 245 out of seven schools in seven regencies in Lampung Province, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using the paired samples t-test at the significance level of 0.05 for all subjects. This research applied a quasi-experimental design. Findings: Value of t-count (6.249) for General Knowledge was greater than t-table at the significance level 0.05 which confim the effectivity of the model. Conclusions:Inclusive education model had an effective influence on the learning achievement of students with special needs in the General Knowledge subject. Keywords: Children with special needs, cognitive learning achievement, inclusive education model DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v8.i2.201811

Parental involvement in fostering the character of child discipline in school. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to explore the role that parents play in improving the character of children’s discipline in school. Methods: The study population consisted of 7 elementary schools with a target sample consisting of 8 school personnel and 27 parents. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews to be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Findings: The most common problem at school is the dynamics of child discipline. The discipline of parents in their children’s education can improve discipline, self-esteem, cognitive development, social interaction skills, and academics as a whole. The role of parents in encouraging student discipline, it is clear that parents must be involved as shown by most respondents (66.67% of parents and 62.50% of teachers). Conclusions: Designing interventions aimed at harmonizing parental and teacher assessments in certain activities related to primary school education will be beneficial in fostering child discipline character education. The results of this study also have implications for child care and protection. Keywords: Parental involvement, school personnel, children’ discipline. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v8.i2.201807
