Abstract

The transformation of local culture in urban environments has become a challenge that continues to grow along with modernization. Cultural preservation is not only limited to maintaining the existence of existing urban heritage, but can also be realized through the design of new facilities as cultural development centers. One aspect of culture that has decreased is the habit of reading and appreciation of fine arts. Palembang City, as the capital city of South Sumatra Province, faces the challenge of increasing the level of literacy and art awareness which is still relatively low. Therefore, a literacy and art development center is needed, in the form of a public library and art gallery, which can be a means to increase public appreciation of local artworks and revive interest in reading culture as part of the city's cultural identity. The method used in this writing is a descriptive method by describing the existing conditions of the study object with contextual analys and identifying the concept and application of regionalism related to design needs. With an effort to create an expression of local culture packaged in modern technology and in harmony with the regionalism architecture approach. The output is expected to increase people's knowledge, provide easy access for people to enjoy library collections and works of art, and preserve the culture of Palembang city with an architectural approach.

Abstract

The government provides subsidized single-story housing for low and middle-income communities. However, these houses often undergo major renovations due to residents is comfort with the housing quality. Buildings that adopt a passive design approach have the potential to enhance comfort and environmental friendliness as a sustainable and future oriented investment. Therefore, passive design is essential for achieving sustainable renovations of subsidized housing. This study focuses on three subsidized housing projects in Medan City. The research employs qualitative and quantitative approaches, collecting data through three stages: literature review, expert interviews, and field observations, including questionnaire distribution to residents of single-story subsidized housing in Medan. A Likert scale is used to assess residents needs, while a ranking system prioritizes the most efficient passive design factors for renovation. The study identifies five key passive design factors that can optimize subsidized housing: vegetation, materials, ventilation, shading, and interior layout. The findings serve as a guideline for homeowners, developers, and policymakers to construct or renovate more sustainable subsidized single-story housing.

Abstract

Kampo Laea Hukaea is the indigenous territory of the Moronene tribe, one of the native tribes of Southeast Sulawesi Province. Within this area, there are traditional buildings of the Moronene tribe that have not been studied, and their quality has been deteriorating according to the local community. This threatens the authenticity and identity of the Moronene tribe. This research aims to identify the spatial structure formation system of the Moronene people's houses in Kampo Laea Hukaea. Using a descriptive qualitative method, with direct field observation and in-depth interviews, data was collected and analyzed through triangulation. The research findings reveal that the Moronene people's houses have a spatial structure divided both horizontally and vertically. Horizontally, there are the patande space (included in laica irai or front house), botono space (the core of the house), and the dapura space (included in laica ibungku or back house). Vertically, there are the tonto space (lower section), botono space (middle section), and pea space (upper section). These spaces, both horizontally and vertically, are consistently found in the cases, thus forming the spatial structure system in the houses of the Moronene people, which is an authentic identity of the Moronene tribe's culture in Kampo Laea Hukaea. This study contributes to uncovering the identity of the traditional houses of the Moronene people, thereby enhancing the sense of responsibility toward preserving ancestral heritage and maintaining the Kampo Laea Hukaea environment.

Abstract

Slum areas in major cities often reflect policy failures and a lack of political will. This study aims to examine the revitalization of the Karang Mumus area in Samarinda through a vertical land consolidation approach (KTV). The research employs a qualitative method, utilizing observations and literature studies from secondary data and field reviews. Findings indicate that the Karang Mumus area covers 8.72 hectares and has been prioritized for intervention through a collaborative funding scheme. Location scoring analysis, based on key and supporting factors, shows that the readiness of potential new locations ranges from 50% to 75%. The implications of these findings suggest that the implementation of KTV requires significant efforts and support from various stakeholders to improve slum settlements into more livable, clean, orderly, safe, and healthy environments. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers in planning and prioritizing slum revitalization in major cities.

Abstract

As one of the educational institutions, pesantren have significant potential to contribute to sustainable development, both within the local context where they operate and in the broader environment. The aim of this study is to measure the sustainability index of pesantren and develop a typology based on space utilization characteristics to generate improvement recommendations that will enhance the sustainability index. The researcher formulated the sustainability index concept based on three parameters: the proportion of low-albedo roofs (white roofs), the proportion of trees (green space), and the proportion of water bodies (blue space) relative to the total land area. Additionally, data was collected on areas of buildings with non-white roofs (orange space) and open land areas (gray space). Dimensional data for the five parameters were obtained using Google Earth satellite images for 46 pesantren members of the Ecopesantren program, located across Sumatra and Java. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using the Wald method to categorize the pesantren and recommend strategies for enhancing their sustainability index. The analysis revealed that none of the pesantren had a sustainability index above 50%, primarily due to the limited use of white roofs and blue spaces. Five distinct clusters were identified: developed pesantren, pesantren toward development, pesantren with space competition, green pesantren, and compact pesantren. Specific recommendations for improving sustainability were proposed for each cluster type.
