Abstract

This article discusses the orientalist views of the Prophet Muhammad's hadith. Discusses the differences in hadith studies in the West and in the East as well as views on the sanad al-hadith and the matn al-hadith. In addition, it also discusses the rebuttal of the Orientalist theory. The approach of this article uses the study of literature studies (Library Research) using qualitative-descriptive methods and approaches. The results of this study indicate that Orientalist views on the hadith are the same, namely criticizing the authenticity of the hadith in terms of both sanad, matn, and rawi. The subjectivity of Orientalists who at least keep their own missions to corner Islam behind the lens of orientalism, which is actually a neo-colonialism over the Eastern hemisphere, especially the Islamic region as their goal of studying the hadith. Disclaimers made by the hadith scholars such as Azami in order to destroy their theories based on depth research and justified scientifically.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that consumptive behavior (excessive consumption) has become a significant issue in the modern era. In the Prophetic traditions, this behavior is referred to as isrāf, which encompasses not only primary but also basic human needs. Several hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explicitly prohibit isrāf, including those narrated by al-Nasā’ī (No. 2512), Ibn Mājah (No. 3595), and Aḥmad (No. 6408). Accordingly, this study aims to examine these prohibitive hadiths by employing a combination of Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s maʿānī al-ḥadīth framework and Jean Baudrillard’s theory of consumerism, to assess the relevance of the prohibition of isrāf within the context of contemporary consumption patterns. This study addresses three main research questions: (1) What is the concept of isrāf in the hadiths? (2) How are these hadiths understood in the present context? (3) What is the relevance of the concept of isrāf to modern consumer behavior? The findings of this study are threefold. First, in the Prophetic traditions, isrāf refers to behavior that exceeds actual necessity, whether in terms of wealth expenditure or other aspects of life. According to scholars, isrāf applies not only to monetary spending but also to any action that exceeds reasonable limits. Second, the hadiths prohibiting isrāf emphasize the importance of maintaining balance and avoiding extravagance—be it in eating, dressing, or spending—especially in a modern context where media and technology encourage consumptive behavior. Third, isrāf has evolved in form in contemporary society. For instance, isrāf in food consumption is manifested through the mukbang trend on social media, isrāf in clothing is reflected in the phenomenon of flexing, and isrāf in financial expenditure is influenced by the PayLater payment method. These phenomena illustrate how the concept of isrāf remains relevant and identifiable in various dimensions of modern consumer behavior.

Abstract

This article is a study of hadith in the perspective of the science of takhrijul hadith. The choice of the title theme is due to the phenomenon of some Muslims who aggressively campaign forbidden grave pilgrimage for women. Among them there are those who forbid, there are those who forbid, and there are those who allow it. This phenomenon makes the writer interested in exploring the hadiths about the grave pilgrimage for women. And it will be very interesting to study more deeply the perspective of the science of Takhrijul Hadith. The research methodology that I use is descriptive qualitative using a type of library research approach. The results of this study indicate that the hadiths about the grave pilgrimage for women have various editors who have different wurud asbabul so their interpretations need to be compared so that they can be used proportionally and fairly.

Abstract

In Islam, the hadith has apposition  as the number two source of Islamic law after the Qur'an. However, not all hadiths can be used immediately. There are hadiths that are not used as a legal basis, because after investigation, it turns out that certain hadiths do not originate from the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Using a literature survey, this article found that the science of Jarh wa ta'dil is a science used to find out the negative and positive nature of the narrators of the hadith which has an influence on the quality of the narration that was narrated. By mastering the science of jarh wa ta'dil, it can select which hadiths are authentic and which are not valid, especially in terms of the quality of the narrators of the hadith, not in terms of obedience. There are several methods that have been studied and determined by the scholars in explaining the narrators' narration of the hadith, both in a defective state and in a tsiqah state. Among these are: Honesty in providing judgments, careful in researching and evaluating someone, paying attention to ethics and manners in the jarh, and mentioning the causes of disability or weakness of narrators of the hadith. The scholars of jarh wa ta'dil disagree regarding the statements of the problem of jarh wa ta'dil regarding their assesment of narrators of the hadith. Some scholars give a negative value and some others rate positively. If for example it happens in such a way, then further research is needed that is more directed to the truth. In examining the hadith, especially regarding the character of the narrators of the hadith, it is obligatory to refer to several references, so that the results of the research can be objective. Therefore, this article recommends further research, specifically how to implement the theory of jarh wa ta'dil in determining good leaders in this globalization era.

Abstract

The Hadith Thaqalayn (al-Qur'an and Ahl al-Bayt) is one of the hadiths which is the central point of the difference in manhaj between Ahl al-Sunnah and Shi'ah. By referring to this hadith, a religious theology according to ahl al-Bayt claimed by the Shi'ah. The thaqalayn hadith is the hadith of Ahl al-Sunnah, one of which was narrated by the Muslim Imam who told that the Prophet had a testament so that Muslims cling to the Qur'an so that they do not get lost. Then the Prophet in the hadith thaqalayn also has a testament so that Muslims always protect the rights of ahl al-Bayt so as not to abuse them. The Shi'ah turns out that when they understand this hadith differently from Ahl al-Sunnah, they argue that the consequence of adhering to thaqalayn is to appoint them as leaders of the ummah because leaders must provide guidance, and ahl al-Bayt is a guide for Muslims. Therefore, by using the library research method (literature study), in this paper we will try to describe the historical authority of several thaqalayn hadiths narrated by the hadith imams, as well as discuss the meaning content of thaqalayn hadith or sunnah itrah by referring to comments the scholars of hadith in the books of rijal and sharah hadith.

Abstract

Hadiths are an authoritative source of Islamic teachings, yet their interpretations are often textual and neglect historical or social contexts. This phenomenon has resulted in authoritarian and even misogynistic interpretations that marginalize certain groups, especially women. This article seeks to answer three main questions: how the hermeneutic approach is applied in understanding hadith texts, what factors influence its use, and what goals it aims to achieve. This research employs a library study method with a descriptive-analytic approach. Data were obtained from the works of Khaled Abou El Fadl and other hermeneutic literature on hadith. The findings reveal that the hermeneutic approach, particularly Khaled's negotiation-based hermeneutics, offers a more contextual and open model of interpretation through three core elements: author, text, and reader. This method avoids interpretive authoritarianism and opens space for adaptive ijtihad in responding to contemporary realities. Therefore, hermeneutics serves as a crucial tool for revitalizing hadith understanding to maintain its relevance and authenticity in an evolving modern world.

Abstract

Amid modernization, understanding the Prophet's hadiths can no longer rely solely on textual approaches. This study explores the methodological models offered by Abdul Mustaqim, Nizar Ali, and Nurun Najwah. What are their similarities and differences, and how can a new methodology be constructed to meet contemporary challenges? This qualitative research adopts a descriptive-comparative approach. Primary data were sourced from the works of these three scholars and major hadith collections, while secondary data were derived from relevant literature on hadith methodology. The analysis was conducted by comparing their theories and interpretative strategies. The findings reveal that all three employ auxiliary sciences in hadith interpretation, albeit with different emphases. Mustaqim advocates for an interconnection paradigm (socio-historical, anthropological, medical), Nizar Ali proposes six interdisciplinary approaches, while Najwah focuses on historical and hermeneutical methods. Based on this analysis, the author proposes a new method called al-Jam‘u wa al-Ikhtisar, combining linguistic, socio-historical, and scientific approaches as a comprehensive and contextually relevant strategy for hadith interpretation in the modern era.

Abstract

The literal interpretation of hadith without historical and contextual analysis can lead to rigid, outdated understandings that risk marginalizing certain groups. This paper explores the hermeneutic method of double movement proposed by Fazlur Rahman as an alternative approach to interpreting hadith. The study aims to answer: how can Rahman’s method be applied to hadith texts, and what are its implications for contemporary Islamic thought? Using a qualitative library research method and descriptive-analytical approach, this research synthesizes various primary and secondary sources on hermeneutics and hadith methodology. Findings show that the double movement approach—moving from the present to the context of revelation and returning to the present—allows the recovery of the moral-ethical ideals embedded in hadith. Case studies, such as the prohibition on female leadership, demonstrate how contextual re-reading can result in more inclusive and just interpretations. This method proves essential for interpreting hadith in a way that remains relevant, moral, and intellectually engaging in modern contexts.

Abstract

The textual interpretation of hadiths without considering their historical and contextual dimensions often leads to misunderstandings, misapplications, and even radical tendencies. This study aims to answer the following research questions: What methodologies are used in understanding the text (matan) of hadith? What interpretive approaches are employed? And how can these ensure the relevance of hadith in the development of Islamic thought? Using a qualitative library research method and descriptive-analytical approach, this study reviews classical and contemporary literature, analyzing various interpretive methods and strategies. The findings reveal three primary methodologies: analytical (tahlili), synthetic (ijmali), and comparative (muqarin), supported by three techniques—textual, contextual, and intertextual interpretations—through several approaches such as linguistic, historical, and sociological. These methodological combinations allow hadiths to be interpreted holistically and responsively to contemporary challenges. This study concludes that diverse interpretive strategies are essential in maintaining the relevance of hadith while upholding its authenticity within the dynamic landscape of modern Islamic scholarship.
