Abstract

Understanding hadith while neglecting the context of asbab al-wurud risks leading to rigid and misguided interpretations. Many of the Prophet’s traditions emerged within specific social conditions that require contextual interpretation. This article aims to reveal the urgency of both micro and macro asbab al-wurud in comprehending hadith texts and to present an analytical framework for uncovering their intended meanings. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing library research methods, with data sourced from classical hadith collections, scholarly literature, and relevant academic studies. The analysis is conducted through a descriptive-analytical approach to elaborate on the functions and models of the asbab al-wurud approach. The findings indicate that micro asbab al-wurud (direct narrations or the Prophet’s interactions) and macro asbab al-wurud (socio-historical context) play a critical role in interpreting hadith proportionally and in alignment with its intended objectives (maqashid). This study emphasizes that interpreting hadith without considering asbab al-wurud can result in distorted meanings, especially when applied to contemporary social issues.

Abstract

The study of hadith matn (content) is equally important as the study of sanad (chain of transmission), particularly in exploring linguistic phenomena to uncover deeper meanings. This article is based on the work of Fatihunnada and Nailil Huda, who examine patterns of verb shifts within the Prophet’s hadith texts, using semantic and pragmatic approaches. The focus is on the variations in past (madhi), present/future (mudhari’), and imperative (amr) verb forms across different narrations, and how these variations reflect specific contextual meanings. The study finds that although certain textual shifts might appear to deviate from formal Arabic grammar, they highlight the hadith's rhetorical eloquence and communicative effectiveness. Through morphosyntactic, semantic, and pragmatic analyses, it is demonstrated that such variations do not undermine the legal values of the hadith but instead enrich their interpretation according to context. For instance, verb changes indicate levels of intensity, reciprocity, or divine intervention, especially concerning eschatological events. The article also offers critical notes on the methodology employed by Fatihunnada and Huda, particularly regarding the limited clarification of their theoretical framework. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of linguistic analysis, especially through semantic and pragmatic methods, for a comprehensive understanding of hadith texts. Such an approach ensures that the authentic meanings of the hadith are preserved and can be appropriately understood and practiced by the Muslim community.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the differences in the number of washes for the body parts involved in wudhu as described in Musnad al-Shāfi‘ī compared to other hadith collections. Wudhu is a significant act of worship in Islam, as it serves as a prerequisite for the validity of other acts of worship, such as salat. Without wudhu, such acts are considered invalid. However, there is a difference in the number of washes prescribed for the body parts in wudhu, which is the primary focus of this study. The method employed in this research is a qualitative approach using library research, in which data is collected through the study of various literature sources, including hadiths found in classical books and works by renowned scholars. The study results show that there are hadiths stating that washing the body parts involved in wudhu is obligatory only once, while the second and third washes are considered sunnah. This explanation is found in several prominent hadith collections, such as Sunan at-Tirmiżī, Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Sunan Abī Dāwud, Sunan an-Nasāʹī, Sunan Ibn Mājah, and Sunan ad-Dārimī. Therefore, washing the body parts involved in wudhu three times is not obligatory, as stated in Sharḥ Musnad al-Shāfi‘ī, which leans more towards explaining the practice as sunnah. This study is expected to provide a clearer insight into the differing views on the practice of wudhu in the hadith tradition

Abstract

The study of hadith continues to evolve, particularly in response to the rapid advancement of the digital age and technological innovation. This development is evident in the increasingly accessible methods of retrieving hadith, which were once obtained through manual efforts but are now facilitated by various digital applications and software. Mausu'ah al-Hadith al-Sharif and the digital library Maktabah Syamilah are among the most comprehensive tools. Additionally, several hadith applications featuring Indonesian language support have emerged, one of which is the Encyclopedia of Hadith: The Nine Imams’ Collection, developed by Lidwa Pustaka in collaboration with Saltanera Teknologi. This article adopts a descriptive approach grounded in literature review to explore the use of such applications, focusing on analyses drawn from recent scholarly articles. One key finding highlights that the Encyclopedia of Hadith: The Nine Imams’ Collection provides considerable convenience in hadith authentication (takhrij) and is widely used as a digital reference in both da’wah and educational contexts. Nonetheless, the ease of access also carries potential risks, particularly concerning the authenticity of hadiths disseminated through digital platforms. Thus, it is crucial to foster a strong understanding of hadith and its sciences, instill values of honesty and integrity in hadith research and dissemination, and promote the use of credible applications such as the Hadith Encyclopedia as foundational tools in digital hadith studies

There are at least two questions asked, (1) what are the factors that influence Ma’mar ibn Rashid in writing the book of Al-Maghazi, (2) how Ma’mar ibn Rashid's efforts in writing the book of Al-Maghazi. In answering the research problem, the researcher used a qualitative method with the type of literature study research. Abstract

The Hadith, as Islamic teachings, gave rise to a multitude of social interactions and understandings. The epistemology of the hadith has been established by hadith scholars, and the ulama of today are enhancing them with several kinds of innovative techniques that may be used to comprehend and apply them. However, in the contemporary era, these various methods continue to provide textual interpretation and a limited comprehension of hadith. This is analogous to realizing that women are not allowed to travel without a mahram. When the hadith is interpreted following the social context of the society, it will be fully understood and serve its intended purpose. To fully comprehend this article, we must have a contextual knowledge of hadith that incorporates several kinds of scientific disciplines. The context of Muhammad's prophetic message or other traditions should be taken into consideration while interpreting hadiths. The hadith will be able to bring out the principles of Islam itself, salihun likulli zaman wa makan, by thorough research and by referencing other scholarly works.

Abstract

Hadith studies are constantly transforming to support the direction of the study from the practical methodological side, which is in line with the ever-evolving times. However, the study of hadith cannot be separated from the early history of the emergence and development of hadith. In this case, the companions have a major role that cannot be underestimated, especially the companions in the context of Medina. This study is presented to examine more deeply the characteristics of hadith transmission in the context of the Companions in Medina. These two questions raised to serve as the foundation of the study: first, what were the dynamics of transmission in Medina; second, how did the transmission of hadith in Medina influence the study of hadith in other areas? Both questions will be approached through a descriptive-analytical method based on library research. The results of the study show that the contribution of the Companions in the transmission of hadith has provided the foundation for the continuity of hadith studies in other regions and later generations. Meanwhile, the narration at that time had characteristics such as; limited oral narration, critical attitude in narration, socio-cultural influences in narration, and practical-based forms of teaching and narration. These characteristics led to a pragmatic identity of the narrator, triggering a stagnation in the study of hadith, also known as the period of limitation of narration.

Abstract

Hadith literature is a very important thing in the process of studying a hadith. Therefore, the process of developing literature must be studied either historically or scientifically. It is said that there are several periods in it, including: Pre-Codification; Codification; Post Codification; Presentation, collection, pen knowledge, and discussion. But before that, it is necessary to look at the development of hadith literature in the Mecca and Medina periods. One of the literary products during the codification period was the book al-Mushannaf Abdurrazaq. This book has been studied by many Muslim scholars as well as Western scholars (orientalists). Harald Motzki even focused his study on this book to find authentic sources of hadith in the first century of Hijri as an epistemological basis for sources of Islamic law after the Qur'an. The question arises, how is the authenticity of the hadith in the book al-Mushannaf Abdurrazaq? What approach did Harald Motzki use in studying the book? The findings in this study that Dating that Harald Motzki did to the book Al-Mushannaf Abdurrazzaq, using the isnad cum analysis method and the traditional-historical approach shows evidence that the materials Abd ar-Razzaq relied on the four main informants were authentic. Therefore, the book is considered as an authentic hadith document of the first century of Hijriyah, as well as clear evidence that Islamic law has existed since that time.

Abstract

The interpretation of hadiths prohibiting cross-dressing, as found in classical sharḥ (commentary) literature, is limited to specific distinctions between male and female clothing and is no longer fully relevant to the contemporary phenomenon of unisex fashion. This article offers a contextualized rereading of the hadith using Fazlur Rahman’s double movement approach to uncover a more relevant moral meaning. It explores: (a) how classical sharḥ literature interprets the hadith; (b) the underlying considerations shaping those interpretations; and (c) how the hadith can be recontextualized in light of current fashion trends. Through qualitative library-based research, this study reveals that classical commentaries do not provide an interpretation that corresponds to the concept of unisex fashion, due to the absence of such a phenomenon in early Islam and the strong emphasis on gender identity. In today's context, which places a high value on aesthetics, the newly contextualized meaning suggests that wearing unisex clothing is not prohibited as long as the boundaries of gender identity remain clear.
