Abstract

Al-Tanwīr Sharḥ al-Jāmi‘ al-Ṣaghīr book by Muhammad bin Isma’il Al-San’ani, is one of the important books of hadith syarah to be studied. The book, which is the Sharḥ al-Jāmi‘ al-Ṣaghīr by Al-Suyuthi, has a peculiarity compared to other similar books, like a Faiḍ Al-Qadīr Sharḥ al-Jāmi‘ al-Ṣaghīr by Syams al-Din Muhammad bin Zaid Ad-dīn, and Al-Istidrāk An-naẓīr ‘ala Al-Jāmi’ Al-Ṣaghīr by Syaikh Syihab Al-dīn Abi Al ‘Abbas Ahmad bin Muhammad al-matbūlī al-Syāfi’i. In this article, the problem studied is the method of syarah Al-San’ani through the analysis of the book of Al-Tanwīr. The problem is studied by descriptive analysis of analysis, namely by explaining important points in this book, then analyzing so as to produce conclusions in the form of methods in this book. The results of the study show that the book of Al-Tanwīr: (1) was conducted using the taḥlīlī method, that is, by expounding the matan hadith and giving syakl information to the matan hadith, then analyzing sentences, a few words, or even a word if that is possible to do sharḥ. (2) In modern academia, this method of writing books can be called descriptive-comparative-analysis. (3) The method of compiling this book is based on the order of the mu'jam letters (Alif, hamzah, ba, ta, tsa, and so on).

Abstract

This study critically examines Bukhari Hadith number 5101, which narrates Abu Lahab's exemption from punishment attributed to his act of freeing the slave Tsuwaibah. Methodologically, this library-based research employs the matn criticism approach developed by Shalahuddin Al-Idlibi. Primary data sources include hadith collections, while secondary data comprises various scholarly books, journal articles, Qur'anic interpretation, sirah nabawiyah, and other literature relevant to the research context. The research findings indicate that the hadith's matn does not contradict Qur’anic verses, other authentic hadiths, sirah nabawiyah, rationality, or existing historical facts, and does not have a haphazard meaning. The applied metanarrative criticism definitively confirms that the additional narrative concerning Abu Lahab’s exemption from punishment constitutes a narratorial insertion (idraj). Crucially, this insertion does not diminish the hadith’s overall authenticity, neither in its isnad nor its matn. This study particularly highlights the importance of matn criticism, an area that has historically received less academic attention compared to isnad criticism. Furthermore, it aims to foster the development of more applicable methods of matn criticism within contemporary hadith scholarship. The implications of this research are expected to both enrich existing hadith research methodologies and clarify public understanding regarding the validity of narratives about Abu Lahab’s exemption from punishment.

Abstract

Yūsuf al-Qarḍāwī is a contemporary scholar known for his strict approach to the application of ḥadīth ḍa‘īf. He introduced two additional conditions beyond the three established by Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī, making a total of five criteria for the application of weak hadiths. These two additional conditions distinguish al-Qarḍāwī’s perspective from that of other scholars. This study focuses on two main issues: first, Yūsuf al-Qarḍāwī’s views regarding the applicability of weak hadiths; and second, the implications of his criteria for the acceptability of such hadiths. This research is qualitative and employs a library-based approach. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques. The primary sources consist of three works by al-Qarḍāwī: Kayfa nata‘āmal, Thaqāfat al-Dā‘iyah, and al-Muntaqā min al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb. The data were analyzed using content analysis, and the results are presented descriptively. The five conditions proposed by al-Qarḍāwī lead to the exclusion of several categories of weak hadiths from practical application, including munkar, matrūk, those that independently prescribe specific actions, and ḥadīth shādh.

Abstract

Sunni and Shi'a are among the major Islamic sects that exhibit significant differences in their understanding of the historical development of Hadith, particularly regarding its writing and compilation. The Sunni tradition holds that the formal documentation of Hadith began in the second century of the Hijri calendar. In contrast, Shi’a literature asserts that the writing of Hadith was already practiced during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This paper seeks to analyze the historiographical approach to Hadith in Rasul Ja’fariyan’s book Penulisan dan Penghimpunan Hadis (Writing and Compilation of Hadith). Accordingly, the study addresses three main research questions: First, what is the genealogy of Hadith historiography? Second, how is the historicity of Hadith portrayed in both Sunni and Shi’a perspectives within Ja’fariyan’s work? Third, how does Ja’fariyan assess the historical trajectory of Sunni Hadith writing from a Shi’a standpoint? This is a qualitative study that relies on Ja’fariyan’s aforementioned book as its primary source, supported by secondary materials such as scholarly books, journals, and relevant research on the historicity of Hadith in both traditions. The findings reveal three key points. First, the concept of historiography predates the 15th century CE, hence the necessity of documenting Hadith history, referred to as "Hadith historiography," which includes its origins, development, transmission, isnād–matn issues, and compilation periods. Second, Hadith writing became increasingly prominent among Shi’a scholars from the late 3rd century AH, while Sunnis still favored oral transmission. Third, Ja’fariyan critiques Sunni scholars for using Hadith prohibitions on writing to justify what he views as a delayed documentation tradition compared to the Shi’a.

Abstract

The study of transgender in Islam still leaves an academic gap, especially in looking at hadith texts in a contextual and interdisciplinary way. The dominant approach so far tends to be textual and normative, so it has not been able to fully answer the complexity of the social reality faced by transgender individuals. This study aims to explore the representation of transgender individuals in the Prophet's hadith through three main terms, namely mukhannath, mutarajjilah, and khunthāʾ, using a social psychology approach. The method used is a library research that analyzes primary hadith books and social psychology literature to understand the relationship between hadith texts and the formation of gender identity in society. The results of the study show that hadiths about transgender have a complexity of meaning that cannot be simplified in the dichotomy of halal-haram or curse-not curse alone. The curse in the hadith is directed at mukhannath and mutarajjilah, who deliberately imitate the opposite sex. At the same time, khunthāʾ, who experiences ambiguous biological conditions, is not included in the object of cursing. The social psychology approach asserts that social stereotypes and internal processes of individuals from childhood often influence transgender behavior. In addition to the element of prohibition, the hadith also shows the existence of social protection for transgender people as creatures created by Allah SWT. This finding emphasizes the importance of contextual and cross-disciplinary reading of hadith so that religious interpretations can be more humane, solutive, and relevant to contemporary social reality.
