Abstract

The digital era has intensified differences in understanding hadiths, especially through online Islamic media which serve as arenas for articulating religious discourse. This study explores how media framing mechanisms contribute to the accentuation of divergent interpretations, focusing on the hadith prohibiting the depiction of living beings (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī No. 5495). Two Islamic media platforms—Muslim.or.id and SuaraMuhammadiyah.id—are examined to reveal contrasting approaches to this hadith. While Muslim.or.id frames the hadith as a strict prohibition aligned with Salafi textualism, SuaraMuhammadiyah.id presents a more contextual and interpretative stance reflective of Muhammadiyah's rationalist tradition. This research addresses three core questions: (1) How do these media platforms frame the understanding of the hadith? (2) What are the comparative framing strategies employed by each? (3) How do these differences relate to their respective ideological and institutional identities? William A. Gamson’s framing theory—specifically the concept of media packages encompassing central ideas, reasoning devices, and framing devices—this study utilizes qualitative content analysis of two key articles. It finds that media framing is not a neutral act of dissemination but a deliberate ideological representation aiming to influence perceptions and religious authority in a fragmented digital landscape. The framing of hadiths in these media not only reflects theological preferences but also serves as a strategic tool in discursive power struggles within contemporary Islam. Ultimately, this research underscores the need to view digital religious narratives as part of broader ideological formations, mediated and amplified by the dynamics of new media.

Abstract

This study investigates the reception of Hadiths through YouTube shorts, a feature that facilitates short-form video content, appealing particularly to younger audiences and allowing for easier message absorption. The research is grounded in the rapid development of digital media, which significantly affects the transmission and reception of religious messages, especially Hadith. Two main questions are addressed: (1) What are the forms of Hadith reception and audience responses on the YouTube shorts account @anitaintan? (2) What is the sentiment toward Hadith-related content on this account? This qualitative study employs field and library research methods. Primary data were collected by identifying Hadith content on @anitaintan, selected based on upload frequency and subscriber count. Secondary data includes relevant literature and Hadith texts. Data were gathered through documentation, including screenshots and analysis of comments from uploaded videos. The analysis utilizes Marshall McLuhan’s new media theory and Ahmad Rafiq’s Hadith reception framework. McLuhan emphasizes the influence of the medium on message reception, while Rafiq classifies Hadith reception into exegetical, aesthetic, and functional types. The findings indicate that the shift from textual to visual Hadith presentation allows for greater flexibility in reception. The content creator’s engaging style enhances message delivery, making Hadith more accessible. Positive responses dominated all five videos analyzed, with negative comments appearing in only two, and neutral responses exceeding negative ones. These results suggest that digital platforms like YouTube shorts provide a contemporary space for Hadith dissemination, enabling broader engagement, especially among younger viewers.

Abstract

The emergence of ChatGPT as a new technology capable of addressing various religious issues, particularly in Hadith studies, presents new challenges for Hadith scholars in preserving the authenticity and sanctity of Hadith. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of ChatGPT in assessing the validity of sanad and matan by comparing its analysis of five selected hadiths with the book Jawami’ul Kalim. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the research refers to the concept of "Rules for the Validity of Sanad Hadith" by Syuhudi Ismail. The findings reveal that while ChatGPT can provide preliminary analysis on the validity of hadiths, its evaluation is limited to the information available in its database. The analysis tends to be descriptive and lacks the depth found in Jawami’ul Kalim. ChatGPT's understanding of ulumul hadith is inconsistent, often producing incorrect or unverified answers, and it fails to cite reliable sources. In contrast, Jawami’ul Kalim offers more comprehensive and accurate takhrij with credible references. Therefore, while ChatGPT shows potential as a supportive tool in Hadith studies—especially in early-stage exploration—it cannot replace scholars or classical references. Expert guidance remains essential to ensure the accuracy and reliability of its assessments.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the evolution of the study of hadith sanad criticism with the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, especially in the context of the use of Lidwa Pusaka Hadith software as a tool in sanad analysis. The main focus of this research is how paradigm shifts and methods in sanad criticism occur along with the development of digital technology, as well as the extent to which Lidwa Pusaka contributes to the effectiveness and accuracy of sanad studies. The methodology of this study uses the Systematic Literature Review approach with steps of identification, selection, data extraction, and synthesis from various relevant literature published in the period 2016–2020. Inclusion criteria include journal articles, proceedings, and thesis/thesis/dissertation that discusses sanad criticism, digital hadith studies, and the use of Lidwa Pusaka software in Islamic studies. The data collection technique is carried out by examining scientific documents through academic databases such as Google Scholar, DOAJ, and Garuda. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique is carried out through thematic analysis, by grouping data into main themes related to the development of sanad criticism methodology and the role of digital software, especially Lidwa Pusaka, in supporting hadith research. The results of the study show that there has been a significant evolution in the approach to sanad criticism, from a conventional approach to a software-based digital approach. Lidwa Pusaka specifically acts as an effective means of accessing matan and sanad hadith systematically and quickly, thus helping to speed up the process of verification and classification of hadith. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of integrating technology in Islamic studies, as well as opening up new space for the development of a more efficient, accurate, and inclusive methodology of hadith criticism.

Abstract

In contemporary social reality, misogynistic thought is not only gaining strength across various levels of society but is also developing dynamically among students. This discourse often emerges through textual interpretations of hadiths which, often unconsciously, have the potential to discredit women. In response to this tendency, Muslim feminist scholars such as Fatima Mernissi have proposed alternative methods for reading hadiths perceived as misogynistic. Therefore, studying the reception of misogynistic hadiths becomes crucial, especially within Islamic student organizations such as Ikatan Pelajar Muhammadiyah (IPM), to emphasize that hadith studies continue to evolve in line with contemporary contexts. This research seeks to answer two main questions: how is the reception of misogynistic hadiths manifested among IPM members, and what factors underlie the formation of those reception patterns. This study adopts a qualitative field research approach using Focus Group Discussions and interviews as data collection methods. The analysis employs Stuart Hall’s reception theory, which posits that meaning is not fixed but is constructed through the interaction between the text and the reader, shaped by their social, cultural, and personal backgrounds. Based on the analysis of four selected hadiths concerning female leadership, women invalidating prayer, women entering hell because of a cat, and women as sources of misfortune the findings reveal that the majority of IPM members (75%) adopt a contextual (oppositional) reading, while a smaller portion (25%) engage in a textual (dominant) reading. These patterns of reception are influenced by the socio-cultural dynamics present within their organizational and educational environments.

Abstract

The tradition of reciting shalawat in the Mlangi community is an inseparable part of their religious and socio-cultural life. Shalawat is not only practiced as a form of worship but also serves as a central element in various slametan rituals, such as tingkeban, brokohan, aqiqah, sumpitan, manaqiban, and mauludan. This study aims to explore the community’s reception of the Qur’anic verse that commands Muslims to send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and how this is manifested in their daily lives. Findings indicate that shalawat is utilized in three main dimensions: as a religious practice, a means of social cohesion, and a cultural tradition. The transmission of shalawat in Mlangi has its roots in the royal tradition of the Prophet’s birthday celebration (maulid), with the primary agents being the descendants of Kiai Nur Iman and the wider community. The recitation of shalawat is also rich in symbolism, representing theological frameworks, da'wah media, and spaces of humanism that reflect communal hope and solidarity. Uniquely, each religious figure in Mlangi possesses distinct shalawat practices according to the spiritual authorization (ijazah) and educational background they have received. This study recommends further research to explore this diversity as part of the dynamic and living tradition of local Islam in the Indonesian archipelago.

Abstract

The study of living hadith is a widely used approach to read hadith-based religious practices in society. However, in the last decade (2015–2023), findings show that research on living hadith tends to be stagnant because it focuses too much on the traditional aspects of practice, while the more complex aspects of transmission and transformation are still not paid attention. This shows that there are gaps and potential for further development in the study of living hadith, especially through a more diverse and in-depth approach. This research aims to map the trends, developments, and peculiarities of living hadith studies that have developed in Indonesia over the past ten years. Using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, the author searched 21 academic literature with the keyword "living hadith" through a search engine for academic scientific works, such as; Google Scholar, Sinta, and Garuda which are then classified based on their themes and approaches. The results of this study show that the majority of living hadith studies in Indonesia during the period 2015–2023 still focus on practical and reception aspects, with descriptive methodological tendencies and minimal theoretical exploration. The aspect of transmission and transformation that is actually crucial in seeing the dynamics of the continuity of hadith in society has not been seriously touched. In addition, attention to the digital context as a new space for religious practice is also still very limited. Therefore, this study recommends the development of a living hadith study that is more reflective, interdisciplinary, and adaptive to social and technological changes.

Abstract

This study examines how hadiths were misinterpreted and politicized within the realm of practical politics in Indonesia, with a particular focus on the 212 Movement and the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. It seeks to analyze different ways hadiths were utilized for political purposes during the 212 Movement and how this influenced Ahok’s electability. Using a literature review approach, the research incorporates Domke and Coe’s theory of religious politicization and Vedi R. Hadiz’s concept of Islamic populism to understand how religious texts—especially hadiths—were employed to rally public support. The study identifies four key methods of hadith politicization: altering context, misinterpreting meanings, selectively citing supportive hadiths, and using them as tools for mass mobilization. While the politicization of hadiths was not the sole factor behind Ahok’s declining electability, it played a contextual role in shaping public opinion—evident through memes, posters, banners, digital content, and social media hashtags. The research also underscores the influence of digital news outlets and mainstream media in framing the narrative around the 212 Movement and swaying public sentiment. In conclusion, the politicization of hadiths significantly affected Indonesia’s political landscape, especially during the events surrounding the 2017 Jakarta election.

Abstract

This study examines Mattampung, a traditional death ritual of the Bugis community in Watu Village, Barebbo District, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. The ritual involves restoring or replacing graves with headstones and is carried out to pray for the deceased. The research is based on the argument that the Mattampung tradition reflects the reception of hadith, particularly those related to the virtues of reciting the Qur’an and offering prayers for the dead, thus shaping the community’s religious practices. This field research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach and was conducted over six months. Primary data were obtained through direct observation, interviews with ten informants, and written and personal documentation. The analysis draws upon the theory of living hadith and Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological framework, which explores human actions through "because of" and "in order to" motives. Findings reveal that Mattampung serves as a form of living hadith, wherein the community internalizes and practices prophetic teachings in a localized religious context. The tradition embodies a dynamic interaction between textual transmission and lived religious experience. From a phenomenological perspective, community motives include preserving cultural heritage, comforting bereaved families, giving charity, and honoring parents. The goals of the ritual are to pray for the deceased, repair graves, educate descendants, deepen religious knowledge, and foster mutual support. Overall, Mattampung illustrates how local Islamic traditions can serve as meaningful expressions of hadith reception and contribute to the preservation of both religious values and cultural identity within the Bugis community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the trends and methodological tendencies of asbāb al-wurūd research in Indonesia between 2011 and 2024 using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. A total of 20 academic publications were systematically examined to map the trajectory and quality of this growing discourse. Findings indicate that the historical-contextual approach dominates, positioning asbāb al-wurūd as a crucial framework for understanding the relevance of hadith in contemporary socio-religious contexts. Rather than serving solely as a supporting tool, asbāb al-wurūd has emerged as an interpretive method addressing issues such as education, gender justice, and reinterpretation of controversial narrations. However, the research remains largely repetitive and descriptive, lacking theoretical and methodological innovation. Therefore, this study recommends interdisciplinary and reflective methodological expansion within asbāb al-wurūd research and suggests extending SLR applications to other hadith-related fields to support epistemological renewal.
