Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the chronic diseases with an increasing prevalence in Indonesia, including in coastal areas. Emergencies due to complications of diabetes, such as hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, are often not handled quickly due to limited public knowledge. Therefore, real efforts are needed to equip the community with basic skills in managing diabetes emergencies. Simple Treatment for Diabetic Emergency (STDE) is one of the educational methods developed by the STIKES Hang Tuah emergency department team to increase knowledge and skills in recognizing the signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia in patients with diabetes mellitus. This program aims to equip the community with basic skills in handling diabetes mellitus emergencies, including hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia conditions. The target of this STDE program is the community of Gisik Gebang Hamlet, Gisik Cemandi, Sedati Sidoarjo as many as 39 people. This activity was carried out for 1 week, which was divided into 3 sessions, namely initial assessment and pre-test, training with simulation, and post-test. The results showed that the average pre-test attitude and knowledge score was 69.18, the average post-test score was 87.3, and with the Wilcoxon statistical test, p < 0.001, there was a difference in attitude and knowledge of the participants before and after STDE training, with an increase of 27.8%. This program is an innovation that coastal communities hope will be able to recognize the early signs of a diabetes emergency and take simple actions that can save lives before advanced medical help is available.

Abstract

Stroke is a serious health problem and a leading cause of disability and death, with incidence rates continuing to increase. Families who live with stroke patients often delay treatment because they lack adequate understanding of stroke risk factors and early warning signs. Knowledge of risk factors and symptoms influences the actions that families take before and during transportation to the hospital, as understanding these factors can lead to quicker recognition of a stroke and prompt medical attention. Stroke severity and clinical outcomes can worsen with delayed treatment. Indonesia had 8.3 strokes per 1,000 people in 2023, according to the Indonesian Health Survey. This study examined stroke patients' families' knowledge of risk factors and early stroke symptom detection at RSUD dr. Loekmono Hadi Kudus. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The research was conducted in June 2025 at the Neurology Outpatient Clinic of RSUD dr. Loekmono Hadi Kudus. The study included 490 family members of clinic-treated ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients. Researchers used purposive sampling to select 49 respondents. A modified Stroke Recognition Questionnaire (SRQ) was used to collect data, and univariate analysis was used to analyze it. The findings indicated that 53.1% of respondents possessed a moderate understanding of stroke risk factors and the early identification of stroke symptoms, 26.5% exhibited inadequate knowledge, and merely 20.4% demonstrated proficient knowledge. These findings indicate that most families possess basic understanding, but gaps remain in accurate and timely detection. Most families of stroke patients at RSUD dr. Loekmono Hadi Kudus demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge regarding stroke risk factors and early detection of stroke symptoms.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood, marked by significant biological, psychological, and socio-cultural changes. One of the common issues during this stage is the inability to manage emotions effectively, which can increase the risk of mental disorders such as depression. Interviews with the principal and homeroom teacher at SDN 5 Dalung revealed that fourth- and fifth-grade students. engage in fights or bullying almost every day, reflecting low emotional regulation skills. One intervention that can be implemented is complementary therapy in the form of pranayama yoga. Pranayama yoga is a breathing technique that stimulates the release of endorphins, provides a calming effect, lowers blood pressure, and improves emotional stability. This community service activity was carried out on April 10-11, 2025, and involved 50 fourth- and fifth-grade students. Evaluation was conducted using the DERS-SF instrument (18 items) before and after the intervention. The results showed that before the intervention, 96% of students were in the high emotional regulation difficulty category. After the intervention, this percentage decreased to 66%, with 34% moving into the moderate category. The average DERS score also dropped significantly from 75.08 to 64.72, with a t-test result of t = 6.698 and p = 0.001, which is statistically significant. In conclusion, pranayama yoga has been proven effective in improving emotional regulation among elementary school students and can be used as a simple, safe, and applicable complementary approach to support mental health in schools.

Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease with a high prevalence and is at risk of causing cardiovascular complications if not optimally controlled. One of the main factors of therapy failure is the patient's low adherence to taking antihypertensive drugs. Pharmaceutical personnel have a strategic role in improving compliance through structured education. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of structured pharmaceutical education on therapeutic adherence and blood pressure control in hypertensive patients at the Prafi Health Center, Manokwari. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach in 48 hypertensive patients who met the inclusion criteria. The intervention was in the form of structured individual pharmacy counseling accompanied by educational leaflets. Measurements of adherence and blood pressure were taken before the intervention and four weeks after the intervention. The analysis used a paired t-test with a significance level of p < 0.05 and an effect size calculation (Cohen's d). The study used a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 48 hypertensive patients who met the inclusion criteria. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique from patients who were diagnosed with hypertension, had received antihypertensive therapy for at least one month, and were willing to participate in the study.Medication adherence was measured using a self-report questionnaire consisting of eight statements with a four-point Likert scale (always, often, sometimes, never). The total score ranged from 0–24, where higher scores indicated better adherence. The reliability test showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha > 0.7).The decrease in blood pressure was not statistically significant.Structured pharmaceutical education was effective in improving medication adherence but did not demonstrate a significant change in blood pressure within the four-week observation period. This intervention has the potential to serve as a supportive strategy for hypertension management in primary healthcare settings.

Abstract

Stunting at an early age risk reducing educational achievement, decreasing cognitive abilities, and lowering income when the child reaches adulthood. In the working area of the Pondok Labu Community Health Center, three toddlers were identified with stunting, partly due to limited maternal knowledge regarding essential nutrition, particularly animal protein intake. This community service program aimed to improve mothers’ knowledge, attitudes, and feeding practices to support optimal toddler growth and development through education using the Piring Protein E-book.The activity was conducted for three months at Posyandu Jeruk 2 in the working area of Pondok Labu Community Health Center, South Jakarta, involving 35 mothers of toddlers using quota sampling. The methods included interactive counseling, distribution of the Piring Protein E-book through digital media, and self-monitoring. Measurements were carried out using pre-test and post-test assessments. The variables measured were mothers’ knowledge and attitudes using questionnaires, daily protein intake using a 24-hour food recall, and toddler nutritional status based on the height-for-age Z-score (HAZ). Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test.The results showed a significant increase (p < 0.001) in mothers’ knowledge and attitudes, with the average knowledge score rising from 55.2 to 88.9. Improvements were also observed in toddler nutritional status based on the HAZ score. Education using the Piring Protein E-book proved to be an effective intervention to improve maternal nutritional literacy and support optimal toddler growth and development.

Abstract

Community health problems in Indonesia are increasingly complex, including the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, communicable diseases, nutritional issues, and psychosocial problems, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly. This community service aimed to implement an integrated community health promotion program through education, screening, and preventive interventions in Rejomulyo Village, Kediri. This study used a community-based participatory approach with a descriptive evaluative design. The program involved approximately 65 participants and included health education sessions, health screenings (vital signs, anthropometry, biochemical tests, and physical function assessment), and preventive interventions such as local food-based supplementary feeding and smoke-free household promotion. Data were collected through observation, screening records, and participant responses, and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that a significant proportion of participants were at risk of non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, elevated blood glucose, and abnormal nutritional status. Health education activities improved participants’ knowledge and awareness of disease prevention, clean and healthy living behaviors, and environmental health risks. Preventive interventions were well accepted, with increased community commitment to adopting healthier lifestyles, including routine health monitoring and smoke-free home practices. In conclusion, the integrated approach combining education, screening, and preventive interventions proved effective in improving community awareness, enabling early detection of health risks, and promoting sustainable health behaviors. This model has the potential to be replicated in other communities to enhance public health outcomes.
