Abstract

The rapid development of digital communication in online gaming relies heavily on abbreviation slang to convey meaning quickly and efficiently. On platforms like Discord, the accurate interpretation of this abbreviation  slang requires analyzing the surrounding context, as it functions as a strategic tool for user coordination rather than mere textual shortcuts. This study aims to identify English abbreviation slang within the online Pokémon Go Discord community and interpret its pragmatic functions using J.L. Austin and John Searle’s Speech Act Theory. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through passive observation of active chat channels. The meanings of these abbreviation were then contextually interpreted and analyzed based on locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, along with Searle's illocutionary taxonomy. The interpretation of the findings reveals that abbreviation such as "LFG," "CP," and "AFK" operate as highly conventionalized speech acts, predominantly falling into the categories of Assertives, Expressives, and Directives. This abbreviation slang triggers cognitive, affective, and behavioral perlocutionary effects, facilitating shared understanding, emotional bonding, and concrete in-game actions. The study concludes that abbreviation slang in gaming communities transcends simple morphological truncation; its pragmatic interpretation demonstrates that these abbreviation are performative speech devices used to execute specific social and structural actions

Abstract

Online restaurant reviews have become an important source of information in shaping customer perceptions and influencing dining decisions in digital platforms such as Google Maps. However, there is still limited linguistic analysis focusing on how evaluative meanings are constructed within these reviews, particularly in terms of Appreciation and Judgement. This study aims to analyze how Appreciation and Judgement are realized in Google Maps restaurant reviews in the Marina Bay Area, Singapore. This research employs a qualitative descriptive design using qualitative content analysis guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics, specifically the Appraisal Theory proposed by Martin and White (2005), to interpret evaluative meanings in naturally occurring restaurant reviews. The data consist of 16 selected restaurant reviews collected from Google Maps and analyzed based on attitudinal resources. The findings show that Appreciation is predominantly used to evaluate food quality, ambience, and overall dining experience, while Judgement is mainly directed toward staff behavior and service performance. Positive evaluations are more frequently expressed compared to negative ones, indicating generally favorable customer experiences. The findings contribute to the application of Appraisal Theory in digital tourism discourse by demonstrating how evaluative language systematically constructs customer perceptions of food, service, and dining experiences in location-specific restaurant reviews.

Abstract

Critical thinking ability is one of the essential skills that need to be developed in physics learning in the 21st century. However, students' critical thinking ability has not yet developed optimally, so a learning model that can actively involve students in problem solving is needed. One alternative that can be applied is the STEM–PjBL learning model. This study aims to analyze the effect of the STEM–PjBL learning model on students' critical thinking ability on temperature and heat material. The study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a nonequivalent control group design. The research sample consisted of 42 students of grade XI MA Tohir Yasin who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a valid and reliable essay test, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed that the average posttest score of the experimental class (79.77) was higher than that of the control class (68.75), with a significance value of 0.005 (p < 0.05). Thus, the application of the STEM–PjBL learning model has a significant effect on students' critical thinking skills on temperature and heat material and can be an alternative physics learning method to develop critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the English reading learning strategies that are integrated with Islamic Religious Education (PAI) content at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Attarbiyah Addiniyah Al-Amin Gersik, and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors involved in their implementation. Madrasah students' low motivation and comprehension when reading English texts are frequently caused by teaching materials that are perceived as insufficiently relevant to their Islamic background. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observation, in-depth interviews with English teachers and Islamic education teachers, and documentation of the teaching materials used. The data were analyzed by means of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, following the Miles and Huberman model. The findings indicate that the teachers implemented several strategies, namely: (1) the use of reading texts on the themes of prophetic stories, morals (akhlak), and manners (adab) as reading materials; (2) the integration of religious vocabulary with skimming and scanning techniques; (3) the application of content-based instruction that combines religious and linguistic objectives; and (4) collaboration between the English teacher and the Islamic education teacher in developing the materials. These strategies were shown to increase students' motivation, self-confidence, and reading comprehension, since the materials were perceived as being closer to their Islamic experience. This study recommends the more systematic development of Islamic values-based reading materials within the madrasah environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the principal's management strategies in building an anti-bullying school culture at SMP Negeri 1 Sabang City and MTsN 1 Sabang City, and to identify supporting factors, inhibiting factors, and similarities and differences in the strategies implemented in both schools. This study used a qualitative approach with a comparative study design through data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the principal's management strategies in building an anti-bullying school culture are implemented through the systematic application of management functions, including planning, organizing, implementing, and monitoring and evaluating. In the planning stage, the principal identifies school needs, formulates program objectives, and develops bullying prevention policies tailored to student characteristics and school culture. The organizing stage is carried out by forming a bullying prevention team involving teachers, homeroom teachers, guidance counselors, the student council (OSIS), the school committee, and parents. The strategy is implemented through various preventive and educational programs such as anti-bullying socialization, integration of empathy and tolerance values in learning, routine character building, and child-friendly school campaigns. Supervision is carried out through reporting mechanisms, gradual case handling, student mentoring, and evaluation with teachers and the school committee. The success of this strategy was supported by the principal's visionary leadership, teacher support, school committee involvement, and parent participation. However, several obstacles remained, such as the lack of written SOPs for handling bullying, the perception that verbal teasing is just a joke, inconsistent enforcement of rules, the influence of social media, and limited supervision outside of school hours. This study also showed that both schools had similarities in implementing management functions and a character-based preventive approach, but differed in the values they used, namely universal character values and religious values. The research findings confirm that effective anti-bullying strategies require strong leadership, systematic management, and collaboration between schools, families, and the community

Abstract

The integration of multimedia in secondary education promises increased attention and comprehension, yet classroom practice is often hindered by infrastructure readiness and educators' ICT competence. This research aims to: (1) map patterns of multimedia use by teachers; (2) identify barriers and institutional support; (3) assess students' attitudes and experiences toward multimedia-based learning; and (4) formulate recommendations for improving practice. A mixed methods approach was used through structured interviews with 53 teachers from 52 schools (total 424 response segments) and a 10-item Likert questionnaire with 49 students. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically (keyword/theme extraction), while quantitative data were analyzed descriptively; questionnaire reliability was calculated using Cronbach's ?. Results show the dominant theme of platforms (61.1%) with WhatsApp, video, and PowerPoint most frequently mentioned followed by benefits (47.9%), barriers (27.6%), and support (21.2%). Major barriers include device availability, internet access, and technical disruptions. Student attitudes were positive: composite mean 4.09 (SD 0.47) after reversing negative items; reliability ? = 0.76 (adequate). Pedagogically, teacher practices are primarily at the Substitution-Augmentation level (SAMR), which enhances presentation and material distribution; transformation of tasks toward Modification/Redefinition remains limited. Main recommendations include designing student product-based tasks, offline-first strategies, TPACK-based micro-PD, infrastructure standards and troubleshooting SOPs, and targeted content curation.
