Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of creating sports demonstration videos on students' speaking fluency and accuracy in English. The research subjects were first-semester students of the Physical Education, Health, and Recreation Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Data were collected through video transcript analysis and student questionnaires. The findings indicate that practicing instructional delivery in videos enhances speaking fluency, as shown by reduced pauses and word repetitions. However, in terms of accuracy, errors were still found in grammar, word choice, and pronunciation of technical sports terms. The primary factors affecting accuracy were the lack of speaking practice in academic contexts and insufficient direct correction. This study confirms that project-based tasks, such as video creation, can be an effective strategy for improving students' speaking skills in second language learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the Direct Interaction Strategy on teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri Taekas in the academic year 2024/2025. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental class that received instruction using the Direct Interaction Strategy and a control class that was taught using conventional teaching methods. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests to measure students' reading comprehension before and after the intervention. The findings reveal a significant improvement in the reading comprehension scores of the experimental class compared to the control class. The experimental group showed an increase from an average pre-test score of 43.6% (categorized as "Very Poor") to a post-test score of 89.86% ("Excellent"), marking a 106% improvement. In contrast, the control class, which was taught using conventional methods, showed minimal improvement, with an average score increase from 30% to only 28.26%, still categorized as "Very Poor." These results indicate that the Direct Interaction Strategy effectively enhances students’ comprehension of narrative texts by fostering engagement, encouraging critical thinking, and providing real-time feedback. The study concludes that implementing the Direct Interaction Strategy in teaching reading comprehension significantly benefits students' understanding of narrative texts. Therefore, it is recommended that educators incorporate this approach into their teaching practices to optimize students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

The development of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) significantly influences the educational landscape. In post-pandemic setting, the integration of ICT becomes essential in supporting the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes. This research aimed to: (1) identify the ICT tools and platforms used by the English teachers; (2) investigate the challenges faced by the teachers; and (3) explore the teachers’ responses to the use of ICT tools and platforms in EFL classrooms. The research employed a descriptive-qualitative method, with data collected through non-participant classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with three English teachers. Based on observations and interviews, The findings revealed that: (1) the ICT tools and platforms used by the English teachers included laptops, LCD projectors, speakers, PowerPoint, Wordwall, Liveworksheet, Quizizz, Kahoot, Canva, and Learn English Kids; (2) the challenges faced by the teachers included a lack of confidence and limited experience in using specific platforms at the teacher level, while the school level challenges included limited facilities, technical issues, electricity problems, and time constraints; and (3) the strategies implemented by the teachers to overcome these challenges involved bringing personal equipment, using a whiteboard as a projector screen, conducting ice-breaking activities during technical delays, and participated in training or self-learning to improve their ICT skills. Thus, the effective use of ICT in EFL instruction relies on adequate infrastructure, teacher readiness, and a supportive learning environment for the development of more effective and contextually appropriate ICT integration strategies.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of using the film The Founder as a medium to enhance the English listening skills of students in the Business English Communication (BEC) Study Program, Class of 2023. A pre-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design was employed with a sample of 65 students. Data were collected through listening comprehension tests administered before and after the film-based intervention and analyzed using SPSS 22. The pre-test yielded an average score of 37.31 (range: 5.00–85.00), while the post-test average significantly increased to 75.57 (range: 30.00–100.00). A paired sample t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between the pre- and post-test scores (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that films, particularly The Founder, serve as engaging and effective tools for improving students’ English listening comprehension. Furthermore, the relatively low standard deviation compared to the mean indicates consistent improvement across participants, reinforcing the pedagogical value of audiovisual media in EFL instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the high-order thinking skills (HOTS) of second-grade students at SMAN Noemuti in understanding expository texts. This study investigated students' abilities in evaluating, analyzing, making connections, drawing conclusions, and synthesizing information using HOTS-oriented assessments. This study used a quantitative method with a total of 25 students as samples. The results showed various levels of student competence: high, medium, and low. Evaluation and drawing conclusions were identified as the easiest skills, with synthesis as the most challenging. Students with high ability demonstrated critical thinking and creativity in applying HOTS, achieving excellent results in all categories. Students with medium ability demonstrated moderate proficiency, especially in connecting and summarizing ideas, while students with low ability experienced significant difficulties, especially in synthesizing information. Challenges faced by students included understanding complex vocabulary, handling application-based questions, and interpreting text structures. This study emphasizes the importance of tailored teaching strategies to improve HOTS, such as providing various levels of questions and engaging learning activities. This study offers insights for educators and future researchers to improve HOTS-based learning, fostering critical thinking and comprehensive reading skills that are essential for academic success.
