Abstract

This study aims to examine the obstacles faced by English EFL teachers when teaching pronunciation in a multicultural classroom setting. Employing a qualitative case study design, data was collected through observations and interviews with two senior English teachers from SMP Negeri 10 Kota Kupang. The analysis was conducted using vivo coding. Key challenges include lack of confidence, knowledge, and training, as well as time constraints and the low prioritization of pronunciation in the curriculum. Teachers expressed apprehension about making pronunciation errors, which undermined their confidence in teaching pronunciation. Additionally, they reported inadequate knowledge of English pronunciation, contributing to their lack of confidence. Moreover, teachers were uncertain about the significance of pronunciation in English teaching and faced difficulties in finding sufficient time to cover all required syllabus topics, leaving little room for pronunciation practice. The dearth of teaching materials and resources tailored to individual student needs further exacerbated these challenges. The study concludes that addressing these challenges necessitates the support of educational authorities. Recommendations include providing targeted training sessions to enhance teachers' pronunciation teaching skills and incorporating pronunciation into English school assessments. By addressing these needs, educational institutions can better support teachers and enhance pronunciation instruction in multicultural classrooms.

Abstract

Effective communication is essential in learning English, especially in the speaking aspect. This challenge was evident at SMPN 22 West Jakarta, where students struggled to communicate with their teachers due to language barriers. To address this, the researcher conducted a study in class 9F, involving 33 students, using Classroom Action Research (CAR) across three cycles. The class was chosen due to limited interaction and communication during English lessons. The goal was to improve students' speaking skills through a communicative approach, supplemented with the Simon Says game. The results showed significant improvement in speaking skills. In cycle I, only 11 out of 33 students (33%) could speak English. By cycle III, this number increased to 100%, demonstrating that the communicative approach combined with the Simon Says game was effective in enhancing speaking skills at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Abstract is This study used a qualitative approach and descriptive-qualitative method to examine code-mixing and code-switching among sixth-semester students in the English Education Program at Mathla'ul Anwar University Banten during the 2022-2023 academic year. Five microteaching videos were analyzed. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and checklists. The study found that Subjects A to E used three types of code-mixing according to Hoofman’s theory: intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and mixing involving pronunciation changes. Based on Poplack’s theory, the types of code-switching observed were tag-switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. Subject A showed the highest frequency of code-mixing with 30 instances (26 intra-sentential and 4 intra-lexical) and the highest frequency of code-switching with 30 instances (1 tag-switching, 14 inter-sentential, and 15 intra-sentential). Code-mixing and code-switching were influenced by bilingual or multilingual abilities, the need to fit social or situational contexts, and specific communication needs. The study suggested further research in sociolinguistics to better understand these phenomenon. The researcher hoped the findings would be useful for readers, students, and researcher interested in code-mixing and code-switching. Keywords: Code Mixing, Code Switching and Sociolinguistics
