Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The study aims to describe how Gen Z students at Dharmawangsa University especially those in the communications science program, manage interpersonal conflicts based on their personal experiences. This study uses a phenomenological paradigm through their experiences in managing project assignments in 3 months and divided into several groups. During 3 months of working on the project, several groups of students found various problems that then required them to carry out conflict management according to the personal characteristics of each member in each group. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive research design with the Miles and Huberman analysist techniques, including data reduction, data display and conclusions. Meanwhile, data collection techniques are carried out in 3 stages, observation, interview, and documentation. The result shows that Gen Z is exemplified by two interpersonal conflict management strategies: avoiding conflict and compromising, both of which involve a variety of techniques. Making concessions involves being transparent with all parties involved, having in-depth conversations, negotiating, determining the root cause of the disagreement, and refraining from blaming the other party. For Gen Z, this is considered a positive self-concept. Meanwhile, giving in, doing what others ask, and acting as if you are unaware of the problem are ways to avoid interpersonal conflict. This demonstrates a loose and uncaring mindset, which are two negative self-concept characteristics. Thus, the results of this study will increase understanding, knowledge, or concepts regarding the characteristics of Gen Z in interpersonal conflict management.

Abstract

Interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in parenting, especially for fathers who act as single parents. This study aims to explore how dyadic interpersonal communication between single fathers and their children shapes a parenting style that fosters social development in children living in Denai Subdistrict, Medan City. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The research involved single fathers and their children as primary and additional informants to gain a comprehensive understanding of their communication dynamics. The findings indicate that dyadic interpersonal communication serves as the foundation for implementing a democratic parenting style. Fathers provide their children with the freedom to make independent decisions while offering guidance, support, and motivation. The communication pattern prioritizes openness, mutual understanding, and strong emotional support, allowing children to feel heard and valued. Furthermore, single fathers must assume multiple roles—not only as financial providers but also as caregivers who offer emotional and moral guidance. The ability to balance these responsibilities significantly impacts the child’s overall development. The success of this parenting approach is reflected in the child’s positive social growth, including their ability to engage with their surroundings, express empathy, and develop a sense of responsibility in everyday life. A structured and empathetic communication approach helps children build confidence and develop essential social skills. Therefore, this study emphasizes that interpersonal communication between single fathers and their children is not merely a parenting tool but also a crucial mechanism for shaping children's character and personality.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how subliminal messages in Netflix shows shape the viewing habits of students in Medan. In the digital age, subliminal messages are often used in media communication strategies to influence viewing habits that occur unconsciously. Netflix presents such messages through nonverbal elements such as body gestures, facial expressions, visual colors, sound design, as well as digital features such as autoplay and recommendation systems. This study uses a qualitative method with a constructivist paradigm to explore students' subjective experiences in interpreting the presence of subliminal messages in Netflix shows. Data were obtained through interviews with purposively selected informants and validated through source triangulation. The results show that students gradually form new viewing habits through repeated interactions with Netflix features and content. On the cognitive aspect, selective awareness of recommended shows emerged; on the affective aspect, emotional attachment to the visual and audio atmosphere was formed; while on the conative aspect, viewing habits occurred longer due to the continuous show system. This study provides an understanding of how subliminal messages work in digital media and the meanings constructed by students as a form of modern communication that is subtle and not fully realized.

Abstract

Society has experienced rapid development in the fields of health, technology, and social life. The continuously evolving digital era has transformed various aspects of social life, particularly in the ways people communicate, access information, and develop social awareness. Mass media plays an important role as a medium of interaction and information dissemination within society, especially among Millennials and Generation Z, who are recognized as digital natives. This study aims to analyze the responses of students of the Islamic Broadcasting Communication (KPI) Study Program at UINSU toward the issue of the employment crisis in Indonesia, as well as to examine the influence of social media news coverage on their awareness. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. The research subjects were KPI UINSU students from the 2022 cohort who had accessed employment-related news through the Instagram account @cnnindonesia. The findings indicate that news about the difficulty of obtaining employment uploaded by the Instagram account @cnnindonesia was perceived as relevant to the social realities faced by society, particularly young people. The limited availability of job opportunities has become a shared source of concern, especially for graduates who have not yet obtained employment opportunities. Nevertheless, some informants considered that the information presented was not significantly different from other media and therefore did not have a specific influence on their patterns of thought or actions.
