Abstract

Abstract stractDeaf people in Indonesia face communication barriers that limit their social interactions in everyday life. This study examines the use of Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO) in social interactions within the TIBA Community (Tim Bisindo dan Aksesibilitas) in Surabaya as a form of inclusive communication. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and the framework of Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), this research analyzes how BISINDO functions not only as a communication tool, but also as a form of social accommodation and a marker of Deaf cultural identity. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six informants from within the community, as well as documentation. The findings show that interactions within TIBA form three layered accommodation strategies, namely pedagogical convergence, kinesthetic convergence, and cultural divergence. Hearing individuals are encouraged to adopt the logic of Deaf visual language, while the community maintains teaching authority as a way of protecting its cultural identity. This study concludes that inclusive communication within TIBA is not one-sided, but instead requires the active involvement of both parties without eliminating each other’s identities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form of satire in the content of political memes on the Instagram account @politicalmemes.id related to the issue of the People's Demands 17+8. The study uses a qualitative approach with Klaus Krippendorff's content analysis method to understand the meaning of messages represented through visuals, text, symbols, and humor in political memes. The results show that the meme content on the account contains several forms of satire, namely Horatian satire, Juvenalian satire, parody, and irony. Satire is used as a digital political communication strategy to convey social criticism of the government, political institutions, and the state of democracy through a humorous approach that is easily understood by social media audiences. This study also found that political memes function not only as digital entertainment, but also as a medium for political expression, education, symbolic resistance, and the formation of public opinion in cyberculture. The characteristics of cyberculture are seen through the participatory nature of memes, easy to disseminate, and can be modified by other users according to the developing social context. Thus, satirical memes on social media can be understood as a form of digital political communication that plays an important role in building public discourse in the era of digital democracy.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and analyze conflict management strategies in romantic relationships involving individuals with avoidant attachment and anxious attachment styles. Differences in attachment styles between two individuals in a romantic relationship frequently cause recurring communication conflicts that may direct the relationship toward an unhealthy condition. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interview techniques with eight informants aged 19–22 years who were in or had been in romantic relationships. Informants were selected using purposive sampling and identified as having avoidant or anxious attachment through an attachment styles questionnaire. Results showed that individuals with anxious attachment tend to be more emotional, seek validation, experience overthinking, and strongly desire quick conflict resolution to preserve the relationship. Conversely, individuals with avoidant attachment tend to avoid conflict, maintain emotional distance, prioritize independence, and have a low need for external validation. These differences generate a recurring pursuer-distancer dynamic that causes repeated communication conflicts. The conflict management strategies found include: avoiding strategy (among avoidant informants), and compromising and accommodating strategies (among anxious informants). Open interpersonal communication, emotional space provided with assurance, and high empathy were proven to be key factors in managing conflict constructively.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the digital discourse surrounding netizens' resistance against government policies through tone deaf narratives on TikTok in 2025. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach employing Rodney H. Jones' digital discourse analysis, which emphasizes text, context, action and interaction, as well as ideology and power. The findings of this study indicate that the tone deaf discourse on TikTok is constructed in a multidirectional manner. The casual appearance and simple background settings used by content creators build a sense of trust and emotional closeness with the audience. The consistent use of terms such as tone deaf, government policy, public grievances, and criticism across all content carrying tone deaf narratives is evident. Netizens' responses reveal a duality: there are both pro-content and anti-content groups. Videos with tone deaf narratives represent a form of digital political participation operating through the No Viral No Justice mechanism. The conclusion of this study is that TikTok has transformed into a serious public discourse space, where citizens and netizens freely express their criticisms and arguments in pursuit of justice and civic rights.

Abstract

Posyandu Keluarga (POSGA) is an integrated basic health service program implemented by the Surabaya City Government through Mayor Regulation Number 59 of 2023 as part of community health development efforts. This research aims to analyze how health education in POSGA services is implemented as a development communication practice in Pacar Kembang Village, Surabaya. Using a qualitative method with in-depth interviews with Surabaya Hebat Cadres (KSH), health workers, village officials, and POSGA participants, this research is analyzed through the theories of Development Communication by Servaes, Interpersonal Communication by De Vito, Social Penetration by Altman & Taylor, and Diffusion of Innovation by Rogers. The results show that POSGA implements a structured participation model integrating formal regulations with active participation of KSH as a change agent. Empathetic interpersonal communication gradually builds residents' trust, although the innovation adoption process varies among individuals. Resident resistance is the main barrier, yet it drives participatory communication innovations such as the Dasi Anting program.

Abstract

This study examines the use of machine learning algorithms to forecast banking profitability in Southeast Asia using Return on Assets (ROA) as the main performance indicator. The study is motivated by the central role of banks as financial intermediaries, liquidity providers, and key institutions supporting financial stability across the ASEAN region. A quantitative predictive approach is employed using secondary data from the annual financial statements of banks in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam for the 2017–2024 period. The analysis is carried out in Google Colab using the Support Vector Regression (SVR) algorithm. Historical ROA values are used as predictors, while ROA in 2024 serves as the prediction target. Model performance is evaluated using Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). The results show an MAE of 1.6299, an RMSE of 3.6195, and a MAPE of 209.33%. These results suggest that SVR can capture part of the historical pattern in bank ROA, particularly for banks with values within a more typical range. Its performance, however, becomes less stable when actual ROA is negative, close to zero, or unusually high or low. The findings therefore indicate that SVR can serve as an initial forecasting model for banking profitability, although its predictive performance should be strengthened by incorporating additional financial variables.
