Abstract

Histopathological examination plays an important role in assisting the diagnosis of disease. One indispensable ingredient is a liquid fixation. fixation is a critical step in the preparation of histological section by which body tissue immersed in fixation liquid and preserved from decay thereby preventing autolysis and putrefaction. The aim of this study is to determine the better fixation in between bouin liquid and buffer formalin. The study was an experimental laboratory of two rats. A rat is injected fluids Bouin, others injected buffer formalin. The rats liver is taken and immersed into a fluid according to the injection of a liquid fixation. The rats liver was histologically prepared with hematoxylin eosin staining. The assessment by microscopically examination at 450X magnification. As an indicator seen from the changes in the nucleus of the cell, if there is a cell necrosis (bad) and normal cells (good). The study result shows that Bouin liquid got more normal cells (84.61%), while buffer formalin (38.46%). In conclusion, bouin liquid better than buffer formalinKeywords: fixation, liquid bouin, buffer formalin

Abstract

Health is an important condition inlife and to achieve this it takes a motivation, especially the motivation to recover from a disease. Patient motivation means an impulse from within themselves that cause patient come to visit Oral and Dental Hospital (RSGM) of Syiah Kuala University. Patient motivation is influenced by several factors, which were communication between patient and young dentist and health care and the patient behavior itself. Motivation in every single patient would be a positive impact in improving patient dental cooperative or partnership in performing a treatment and maintenance procedure. Cooperative is response behavior of patient which appear by the ability or collaborative skills related to dental procedure. The high level of cooperative will make patient act positive toward dental health so that dental procedure would be more effective and efficient. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a role of motivation to patient cooperative who visited Oral and Dental Hospital (RSGM) of Syiah Kuala University. This study was a cross-sectional study. The sampling method was done by purposive sampling that included 67 subjects who visited Oral and Dental Hospital (RSGM) of Syiah Kuala University. Abstract

Teeth extractions are main reason of ridge resorption. Overdenture can give several benefits as preventive prosthodontic treatment which are (1) preservation of alveolar ridge height, (2) increase of denture stability, (3) maintainance of proprioceptive sensor, and (4) increase chewing efficiency. The aim of this case report is to explain overdenture as preventive prosthodontic treatment. A 65 years old male patient came to RSGMP FKG USU to make denture because he has problem in chewing food due to teeth lost. Intraoral examination showed complete edentulous on maxilla and remaining teeth 42 and 43 on mandibula. Intentional endodontic treatments followed by teeth preparation of 2 mm dome-shape with chamfer cervical margin were done for both remaining teeth as overdenture abutment, then covered with dome-shaped coping alloy to protect teeth from caries. Conventional complete denture was made for maxillary ridge and mandibular complete overdenture reinforced with metal meshwork was made. To reduce occlusal force that can cause ridge resorbtion denture were made with semianatomic artificial teeth. Complete overdenture is treatment of choice for this case to get biological and psychological benefits of preventive prosthodontic treatment. Abstract

The Candida albicans cell wall is a target of fluconazole. The content of guava (Psidium guajava L) known have contribute factors to resistance of fluconazole. Objective: characterize the surface alterations and the general shape changes of candida cells after in vitro exposure to fluconazole and guava. Material and Methods: six tooth specimen groups: Cells exposed without fungicidal doses (Negative Control), Positive Cells exposed to maximal fungicidal doses of Fluconazole (100g/ml) (Control), Guava (G), Guava+Fluconazole susceptibility (GFS), Guava+Fluconazole Susceptible-Dose Dependent (GFSDD), Guava+Fluconazole dose Resistance (GFR). Each group mixed with 10 ml artificial saliva, 2 ml glucose 2%, and 2 ml C. albicans. Fluconazole doses based on NCCLS approved M27-A. Scaninng Electron Microscopy conducted after 15 days incubation at Faculty of Veterinary University of Syiah Kuala and Faculty of Engineering University of Indonesia. Results, SEM of Negative Control presented smooth of blastospores; small clusters of interconnected cells, spherical to elongate in shape, lying down, polar buds, and hyphae on dental surface. SEM of Positive Control and Guava generally presented: wrinkled of blastospores, rough surfaces, cells fewer than Negative Control, and lying apart. Positive Control showed spherical to elongate in shape and Guava with spherical in shape presented more wrinkled than Positive Control. SEM of GGF and Guava+Fluconazole Susceptible-Dose Dependent presented wrinkled of blastospores, rough surfaces, decreased in number, spherical to elongate in shape, lying apart, and hyphae on surface. SEM of Guava+Fluconazole dose Resistance presented wrinkled of blastospores but more smooth than others, elongate in shape; buds orientations penetrate to dental tissue. Conclusion: Guava improving the integrity of cell wall of Candida albicans and contributed to resistance of Candida albicans to fluconazole. Keywords: Candida albicans, Guava, Fluconazole, Scanning Electron Microscopy

Abstract

Plunging ranula is a mucous extravasation pseudocyst which arises from the sublingual gland and crosses the mylohyoid line into the neck, usually appear in conjunction with oral ranula. To evaluate that the early diagnosis and proper surgical procedure can decreased recurrences rate. A 25 year old man visited Department of Oral Surgery Hasan Sadikin Hospital because of a fluctuant swelling of the left submandibular region and swelling of floor of the mouth. A sonography revealed there was a cystic mass at left submandible and not related to left parotis gland and thyroid. There was enlargment of multiple gland at left neck. The clinical diagnosis was plunging ranula. This case was treated with marsupialization and extirpation of the mass included removal of sublingual salivary gland. Postoperatively, one week after surgery the swelling was reduced and there was no more pain and paresthesia. Many patients have experienced recurrence and sometimes larger lesions have occurred. Excision of the ranula with the associated sublingual salivary gland is the most accepted method with low recurrence rate. It is a case of a 25 year old male presented with plunging ranula with both the oral and submandibular component and its removal by combined intraoral and ekstraoral approach has been reported with no recurrence after a follow up of one mounth.Keyword: Plunging ranula, sublingual gland, mucous extravasation

Abstract

AbstractThe treatment of oral candidiasis commonly used antifungal drug synthesis, but it has some effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache. The leaves of red betel (Piper crocatum) have several compounds which act as antifungals such as alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Kill Concentration (MBC) Piper crocatum leaves with a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% to the growth of Candida albicans. This study is a laboratory experimental which is designed by posttest only control group using the extract of leaves of Piper crocatum. The leaves are extracted by maceration method using 96% of ethanol. The extraction results obtained diluted to be a concentration of 25%, 50%, and 75%. The extract has been tested phytochemical, were tested for antifungal activity using dilution method with Standard Plate Count (SPC) in SDA media. The result of one-way ANOVA analysis showed that the extract of Piper crocatum leaves affected the growth of C. Albicans with p = 0.00 (p0.05). 25%of the extract concentration can inhibit the growth of C. albicans From the results of this study concluded that the extract of Piper crocatum leaves affected the growth of C. Albicans with MIC at a concentration of 25% and MBC at 100% concentration of the extract of Piper crocatum.Keyword: Red bettle (Piper crocatum), Candida albicans, antifungal, dilution method.

Abstract

Adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment are increasingly motivated by esthetic considerations. The majority of these patients reject wearing labial fixed appliances and are looking instead to more esthetic treatment options, including lingual orthodontics and Invisalign appliances. Since Align Technology introduced the Invisalign appliance in 1999 in an extensive public campaign, the appliance has gained tremendous attention from adult patients and dental professionals. The transparency of the Invisalign appliance enhances its esthetic appeal for those adult patients who are averse to wearing conventional labial fixed orthodontic appliances. Although guidelines about the types of malocclusions that this technique can treat exist, few clinical studies have assessed the effectiveness of the appliance. A few recent studies have outlined some of the limitations associated with this technique that clinicians should recognize early before choosing treatment options.Keyword: Invisalign device, conventional labial fixed ortodonthics, aesthetics

Abstract

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. It is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease in which the cytotoxic CD8+ T cells trigger apoptosis of the basal cells of the oral epithelium. Linear Gingival Erythema (LGE) is a progressive disease described in HIV-positive patients and is considered to be an early stage of necrotizing periodontitis. Objective of this case report is to help clinicians to recognize and distinguish OLP lesions from other lesions that have similar appearance such as LGE and give a proper treatment for the oral lesions. We reported a case on a 49-year-old female that was referred to Oral Medicine Department from Periodontology Department with the diagnosis of ANUG and differential diagnosis of Linear Gingival Erythema. On clinical examination, we found Wickhams striae on buccal mucosa and the edge of the lesion. The patients was then diagnosed with Oral Lichen Planus. The patient was treated with sistemic and topical corticosteroid. After 8 weeks of treatment the patient was fully recovered. OLP is seen clinically as reticular, papular, plaque-like, erosive, atrophic or bullous types. Intraorally, the buccal mucosa, tongue and the gingiva are commonly involved although other sites may be rarely affected. Erosive or atrophic types that usually affect the gingiva usually show concomitant reticular form. LGE is limited to the soft tissue of periodontium and characteristically appears as an erythematous linear band that extends approximately 2 3mm from the free gingival margin. OLP lesions may have similarity with other oral lesions such as LGE. It is important for clinicians to recognize the lesions and choosing the proper treatment for the diseasesKeyword: Oral Lichen Planus, Linear Gingival Erythema, HIV, Corticosteroid
