Abstract

Ageing population resulting from the upward trend in life expectancy presents multifaceted issues across all domains, including health, financial, and social aspects. It requires additional public policy intervention to address the challenges and maintain the population well-being during the demographic phenomenon. Using a narrative review, this study delves into the implications of an ageing population in high-income countries like Finland, Germany, and Italy, as well as in Indonesia which is just beginning to experience this transition, and analyse public policies related to ageing population in those countries. The findings highlight several issues related to the ageing population, including health deterioration, housing demand accommodating age-related disabilities, and financial aspects of health insurance and retirement system funding. To address these challenges, high-income countries with ageing populations have implemented various policies. For instance, Finland has established guidelines and funding for elderly healthcare in municipalities, ensuring appropriate medical attention. In addition, pension systems and financial literacy initiatives have been introduced in some countries to support the ageing populace financially. Moreover, home-based geriatric care services in Finland and Germany enable elderly to age comfortably in their own homes. These policy implementations offer valuable insights for countries like Indonesia to better prepare themselves for the social, health, and economic implications associated with an ageing demographic. This comparative analysis serves as a crucial foundation for formulating effective policies tailored to the unique needs of ageing societies worldwide.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze Iran’s foreign policy formulation model in the conflict in Syria. Furthermore, this paper tries to identify Iran’s foreign policy formulation model as a response to the Syrian conflict. This writing uses a qualitative research method, that emphasizes case studies of Iran’s foreign policy in the Syrian conflict by emphasizing literature studies that focus on official documents, reports, and certain international analyses, which are used to collect some data to provide an overview of the focus of analysis. Theoretically, Lovell’s thoughts on models of foreign policy formulation and adaptation as a response to external conditions, namely leadership, accommodative, confrontative, and concordance strategy are used as an analytical tool to analyze Iran’s foreign policy formulation and response in the Syrian conflict. The findings in this paper explain that Iran’s foreign policy formulation is more influenced by leadership factors where the domestic political system emphasizes the importance of achieving national interests, namely economics, and security. While the implementation or response of Iran’s foreign policy is more confrontative considering that Iran’s involvement is more likely to encourage an increase in conflict escalation against countries in opposition to Iran while protecting the Syrian regime under Assad. The results of this article illustrate that a country’s foreign policy is influenced by the political system that characterizes the nation while also explaining the importance of foreign policy responses by national interests even though confrontational interactions are ultimately a consequence of foreign policy implementation.

Abstract

The discussion on gender within the realm of renewable energy has not been extensively explored. This article aims to elucidate the forms of gender inequality that occur in the renewable energy sector and the factors contributing to the low participation of women, despite their high interest and concern for environmental and energy issues. This article employs the Feminist Climate Justice framework to examine this issue, including case studies of women’s participation in the renewable energy sector in two rural areas of Indonesia, namely South Papua and Nusa Tenggara. The findings of this article assert that the gender inequality occurring within the energy sector, specifically the marginalization of women, is not due to a lack of interest or competence in the energy field. Instead, several other factors are at play, such as cultural norms and customs, societal stigma/stereotypes towards women, the double burden, an unsupportive environment, and renewable energy policies that have not comprehensively addressed the concept of just transition and active women’s participation.

Abstract

The emergence of environmental problems that are influenced by various instruments, one of which is the increase in carbon emissions, which in Indonesia itself is dominated by the energy sector, especially the use of coal, so that action is needed to overcome this problem, one of Indonesia's efforts is to negotiate at the G20 leader's summit in 2022 with the International Partner Group (IPG) regarding the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) scheme, which is climate funding mobilized by developed countries for developing countries with the main objective of reducing dependence on fossil coal energy use, this is in accordance with the Paris Agreement stated in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document. However, the process of implementing the JETP scheme needs to be considered more carefully regarding several matters, especially since JETP is one of the climate funds with a fairly large scale and is relatively new, so in this study researchers will focus more on the point of how this JETP scheme can encourage the acceleration of an equitable energy transition in Indonesia by looking at policy regulations related to Indonesia's energy transition and fossil energy consumption and also carbon emissions that Indonesia has produced in recent years using the most relevant concepts, namely the global climate regime and just transition, researchers also see that the JETP scheme has not been able to support the acceleration of the energy transition with many instruments that must be considered such as the emergence of internal and external challenges and obstacles in the JETP Scheme.

Abstract

Although international relations have experienced many rapid developments, especially since the end of the Cold War and increasing interdependence as a result of globalization, it cannot be denied that the issue of peace and security remains a central issue. So, it is natural that developments on this issue continue to get significant recognition from every country, including Indonesia which continues to prove its desire to be able to contribute better. This is in line with one of the three objectives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, namely Indonesia's leadership and role in influential international cooperation and can be demonstrated among them through the role of initiator, mediator and facilitator. Indonesia's contribution to peace and security issues concretely can be seen from Indonesia's success in becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2019-2020. Under the leadership of Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi since 2014 until now, there is an interesting aspect to be discussed but still in the same context, that is Indonesia's initiative to consistently initiate the promotion of the role of women in the issue of world peace and security.
