Abstract

A building object is real, measurable, and visible, which is built because there are forms, ideas, and expressions. However, from a theory it is revealed that this form is something that is left behind after its mass is no longer attached, but still exists because of its human expression, so that there is a space that still exists even though it is not confined to the physical forming of space. Through this paper it will be shown that the real, measurable, and visible building object are formed not only from the space constrained by the real field or container / scope, but also from a space in between the container which is nonphysical and symbolic. Observation of the object study with Lipps’ space theory approach is the research method that is used. The object of study is the building of St.Maria Fatima church in Sragen, Central Java, a place of expression in worship, the designer wants to convey the message of how the human relationship with God through the relationship of space inside and outside the container. What is expected through this paper is to deepen the insight of designer in designing a building, as not only focus on the physical side. Not just human activity, but also human expression is needed to be expressed. Keywords: abstract space; church; symbolic

Abstract

The danger of thyroid disease disorder can be suffered by anyone, including in children aged 7 to 12 years old. If not treated immediately, this disease can have a fatal impact of heart failure, prominent eyes, mental health, and sterility, even to a coma. This happens because of a lack of knowledge about the thyroid gland, its illness and its dangerous effect, which leads to less information given to the children about the disorder. The aim of this design of this interactive guidebook is so that parents and children can know and start tackling about the thyroid gland as well as the dangers of this disease and want to start a healthy lifestyle, by starting to eat healthy foods for the thyroid gland. Visual communication strategy used is to create an educative and interactive guidebook. Supported by supporting media, such as: workbook, promotion media that is booth, leaflet, poster, website and gimmick. The final goal of the design is that parents and children can recognize the thyroid gland and maintain their health by eating a healthy diet and live a healthy lifestyle. Keywords:  children; guidebook; interactive; thyroid disorder

Abstract

Today, technology develops rapidly, where people can not be separated from the internet. In the internet, known a media named website, and ideally the Telkom University should implement the use of website to support various activities that take place in it, because it supports the vision of the Telkom University to be a "world class university". However, after a preliminary investigation, it has emerged some problems on the website of the Telkom University in terms of user interface and user experience, especially on mobile version. These things become important, because internet becomes a means to obtain information related to the higher education. To answer these problems, there will be activities redesign based on the data obtained through literature studies related to relevant theories, visual object observation from some similar websites, interviews with UI/UX experts, as well as distributing questionnaires to the target audience of the website itself. Once the data is collected, it will be analyzed through comparative matrix to obtain results that can be the basis of the interface redesign. Hopefully, with the user interface redesign of the Telkom University website will achieve a good user experience, and also bring a good image of the university itself. Keywords: media; UI; university; UX; website

Abstract

Game already became common media in any society. It’s ideas could be from anywhere. This example is proven in game titled Woman in White. Adapted from Wilkie Collin’s sensational novel. Mr Collin’s novel in similar title was very popular then, though after one hundred and fifty years already adapted dan raised into newer meaning. This new meaning of ‘Woman in White’ makes the game became new media design and still entertains its audiens. This study, try to analize similar aspect in novel that used in this game as formal or non-formal assets, using visual semiotics. Precisely using classic theory from Saussure, Peirce and Barthes. The results of the analysis aim to show that a game designed based on novel inspiration or a popular story needs to remain true to the story even though this media does not have a full story telling. Keywords: game; puzzle; semiotics; urban legends

Abstract

Due to expensive energy costs nowadays, the architects are demanded to produce relatively efficient building designs, especially those with many stories. As a consequence, both accurate estimation and energy saving measures are extremely needed even at the early stage of the planning process. In fact, the consumption for the building energy has been mostly absorbed by air conditioning and lighting needs. In practice, both of them have been affected by direct contact of the sunlight penetrating through the building casing, either by conduction, convection or radiation processes. While both shapes and positions of the building casing are very much dependent on the basic shapes and the building orientation, a critical question is needed to investigate any further: to what extent each basic shape of the buildings is likely to increase or decrease the energy and which orientation gives significant effects. Designed in an experimental research, this study aims to investigate the characteristics of the building shapes in obtaining the heat and to examine the total energy consumption. A series of testing measures is conducted by changing the building basic shapes and their orientation according to the basic conditions previously set. In so doing, obtaining calculated energy consumption difference could be achieved. It is expected that the results of this study is worth considering reference for architects and hence they are able to determine appropriate building basic shapes as well as their appropriate orientation during the planning phase.  Keywords: building basic shapes; building energy; orientation; sunlight

Abstract

Nowadays, young people like Cafe more as a place for socializing than merely for eating. Its environment is made to comfort them through lighting design. This research aims to describe lighting distribution type from users choice of comfort while socializing in a café. The method is to ask 60 persons to choose the most comfortable lighting environment from five given illustrations based on a theory by ILO (1998) and Grondzik and Kwok (2010) theory. The result shows indirect lighting from wall and ceiling as the most preferred lighting distribution to support comfort while socializing.

Abstract

Indonesian has a very rich, unique, and priceless biodiversity and natural resources. Featuring this national treasure is the aim of this research, especially the fauna and flora endemic to Sumatra Island. This research is executed through descriptive qualitative method by exploration and literature study for the first stage and design implementation for the second stage. The first stage contains exploration on Sumatran flora and fauna, batik motifs, contemporary textile design, color composition and trend. The finding of the research is presented at the second stage through contemporary textile motif as the design implementation that can be applied to fashion products. Expectantly, this research can provide guideline and inspiration for textile and fashion designers in developing contemporary textile motifs that take inspirations from the nature and culture of Indonesia.
