Abstract

Shadow puppets, a cultural gem of Indonesia, embody acting, sound, music, literature, sculpture, and symbolism. For the Sasak people, puppets hold deep significance as a medium of communication and entertainment, enabling the delivery of Islamic dakwah messages through their storylines. This study focuses on how puppeteer Ki Dalang H. Safwan, AR, of Sanggar Buwana in Batu Rimpang, West Lombok, conveys dakwah messages during puppet performances. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected via observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings highlight the puppeteer's efforts to integrate dakwah messages, which resonate with audiences by incorporating philosophy and noble values. Puppet performances significantly influence fans, offering life lessons in engaging ways. However, challenges persist: limited publicity restricts audiences to local villagers, funding constraints prevent adding personnel to attract more viewers, and younger generations show declining interest in puppetry. Despite these obstacles, shadow puppetry remains a culturally valuable and impactful tool for communication and education within Sasak society, bridging tradition and Islamic values for the community's benefit. The art form continues to be a reflection of cultural heritage and moral guidance.

Abstract

The myth of Princess Mandalika is a significant folktale within the culture of the Sasak people in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This myth illustrates the sacrifice of a princess for the sake of social harmony within her community, and it reflects profound cultural values. This study employs Claude Lévi-Strauss's structuralist approach to analyse the narrative structure and symbolic meanings within the myth of Princess  Mandalika. Through this analysis, the research aims to understand how the various elements of the myth interact to form a more complex meaning and reflect the duality of values in Sasak culture. The primary focuses of this research are: 1) to analyse the narrative structure of the myth of Princess  Mandalika, 2) to identify the symbolic meanings of the elements within the myth, and 3) to comprehend how this myth reflects the social values and cultural identity of the Sasak community. The analysis reveals that the myth embodies values of collectivism, sacrifice, and the relationship between humans and nature. The sea, as a symbol within the myth, represents uncertainty and the power of nature that must be respected. Furthermore, the sacrifice of Princess Mandalika illustrates a moral principle that emphasises the interests of the community over those of the individual. This study reveals that the myth of Princess Mandalika serves not only as a cultural narrative but also as a mirror of the social values that continue to shape the identity of the Sasak people to this day.

Abstract

This study examines the dramaturgical strategies employed by Teater Koma to convey social criticism during the New Order era, a period marked by stringent political censorship that constrained artistic expression. Focusing on a case study of the 1985 performance of Opera Kecoa, this research analyzes how dramaturgical components such as the script, characterization, symbolism, and satirical humor are strategically utilized to articulate social and political injustices. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study draws upon text analysis and performance documentation to explore these elements in depth. The findings reveal that Teater Koma creatively circumvented censorship through the use of symbolic language, allegorical storytelling, and nuanced narrative structures, enabling the theater to raise public awareness without directly contravening the political restrictions of the time. This dramaturgical approach functioned not only as an artistic expression but also as a subtle form of resistance against authoritarian suppression. The study underscores the critical role of theater as a medium for socially engaged discourse and political critique within repressive regimes.

Abstract

Peresean is a martial arts tradition typical of the Sasak people in Lombok that contains deep cultural and religious values. This tradition not only depicts physical strength, but also reflects the philosophy of life, such as courage, honor, and self-control. This study aims to examine Peresean as a representation of local culture as well as a manifestation of the religious values of the Sasak people with a cultural anthropological approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies in Semoyang Village, Central Lombok. The results of the study show that Peresean has strong spiritual elements, such as the reading of prayers (mentere), fighting ethics that uphold sportsmanship, and its transformation into a means of teaching religious values in the pesantren environment. This tradition is not just a performance or entertainment, but a medium for cultural preservation and character development of the Sasak people, especially the younger generation. Thus, Peresean is a cultural heritage that has not only aesthetic and historical value, but also spiritual and moral, which continues to be relevant in the face of globalization and modernization.
