Abstract

Islamic education in Southeast Asia—specifically in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore—faces unique, multidimensional challenges despite sharing common historical and cultural roots. This article analyzes the key issues facing Islamic education in these three countries, focusing on curriculum, state policy, the dualism of education systems, and the pressures of modernity. The study employs a comparative literature review using a descriptive-qualitative approach. Findings indicate that challenges in Indonesia center on the integration of religious and secular knowledge and disparities in institutional quality. Malaysia faces polarization between religious and national schools, exacerbated by ethnic-political interests, while Singapore grapples with identity and adaptation challenges within a strictly secular state framework. The study concludes by recommending integrative curriculum reforms and contextual policies that engage all stakeholders. Islamic education is a system rooted in Islamic values derived from the Qur’an and Hadith. In practice across various nations, it confronts multidimensional challenges ranging from curriculum issues and educator quality to the impacts of globalization. This research focuses on identifying cross-national challenges in Islamic education and seeking applicable solutions through a qualitative literature review. Findings reveal that primary issues include the dualism of education systems, limitations in human resources and facilities, and the challenges posed by modernization and globalization. Islamic education serves as a cornerstone for character building among Muslims globally; however, the challenges faced vary by country, influenced by political, social, and cultural factors as well as levels of economic development. Consequently, this study comprehensively examines the various issues facing Islamic education in both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority nations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internalization of moral values and the management of digital facilities at MA Tarbiyatul Ihsan in responding to educational challenges in the digital era. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, involving the principal, teachers, and students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that MA Tarbiyatul Ihsan has integrated various digital facilities into the learning process, including projectors, computer laboratories, and internet networks, although technical constraints such as limited electrical capacity remain a challenge. The internalization of moral values is implemented through habituation programs, teacher role modeling, school regulations, and character-building activities integrated into the learning process. The main challenge identified is students' digital distraction, particularly the inappropriate use of mobile phones during learning activities. To address this issue, teachers employ supervision, persuasive approaches, digital ethics education, and a point-based disciplinary system. The study concludes that the successful internalization of moral values in the digital era requires synergy between effective digital facility management, teacher role modeling, and continuous character habituation. These findings contribute to the development of Islamic education models that integrate technological advancement with moral value reinforcement.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Tahfidzul Qur'an families in strengthening the character of istiqomah among children. It aims to identify the values of istiqomah character and analyze the family education model that supports its development. A qualitative approach with a multi-site design was employed involving five Tahfidzul Qur'an families in Pasuruan Raya. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using within-site and cross-site analysis. The findings reveal that istiqomah is reflected in consistency in muraja'ah, time discipline, responsibility, patience, self-awareness, and religious commitment. These values are strengthened through a family education model based on parental role modeling, habituation of worship and muraja'ah, continuous guidance, spiritual motivation, and a supportive Qur'anic environment. The study concludes that family-based Tahfidz education plays a crucial role in developing sustainable religious character and maintaining consistency in practicing Qur'anic values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of students' reading interest through the school library at SDN Besuk 2 Probolinggo, identify the factors contributing to students' low reading interest, and describe the school's efforts to promote literacy. The study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The participants consisted of students, a fifth-grade teacher, and the school librarian, who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the school library plays an important role in supporting literacy development through library services, a comfortable reading environment, literacy-based assignments, and reading activities before classroom instruction. However, students' participation in utilizing the library remains relatively low due to internal factors, such as motivation and reading habits, and external factors, including library facilities, family support, the school environment, and the increasing use of digital devices. The study concludes that improving students' reading interest requires sustainable literacy programs, effective library management, and strong collaboration among schools, families, and the community to foster a lasting reading culture.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning process of the tahfidz extracurricular program and to identify the difficulties experienced by students in memorizing the Qur'an and applying the rules of tajwid at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Probolinggo City. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the tahfidz extracurricular teacher and students. The findings indicate that the learning process was carried out through several stages, namely muraja'ah (review), talqin, talaqqi, drilling, and direct correction of recitation errors. These strategies were effective in improving students' Qur'anic reading skills, particularly in the pronunciation of makhraj (articulation points of letters) and the application of tajwid rules. The students' difficulties included the influence of the local dialect on the pronunciation of Arabic letters, errors in applying vowel length, lack of muraja'ah practice at home, low learning motivation and concentration, and differences in students' Qur'anic reading abilities. To address these challenges, the teacher set memorization targets according to students' abilities, increased reading practice before introducing new memorization, provided individual guidance, and involved parents in supervising muraja'ah activities at home. These strategies gradually improved the students' Qur'anic reading and memorization abilities, although continuous guidance remains necessary.

Abstract

This article critically examines the concept of the university from an Islamic perspective and its synergy with the objectives of Islamic education in cultivating the insan kamil (the complete human being). Modern universities, shaped by secular paradigms, tend to separate knowledge from moral and spiritual values, producing graduates who are academically competent yet ethically deficient. This study employs a qualitative library research approach by analyzing the Qur'an, Hadith, and classical as well as contemporary literature on Islamic education. The findings reveal that the Islamic university is an integrative institution founded upon tawhid, harmonizing knowledge, faith, deeds, and adab (proper conduct) as the core of the educational process. The objectives of Islamic education extend beyond academic and professional achievement to the formation of individuals who are knowledgeable, morally upright, and responsible as servants and vicegerents of Allah. Therefore, Islamic universities should function not only as centers of knowledge development but also as institutions for character formation and civilizational advancement. The study highlights the need for epistemological and institutional reconstruction to establish a holistic educational system that promotes public welfare and responds effectively to contemporary civilizational challenges.
