Abstract

This study aims to describe the form, function, and meaning of the Manenung ceremony in the Hindu Kaharingan community of Tumbang Baringei Village, Rungan District, Gunung Mas Regency. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Informants consisted of three Basir/Pisor (spiritual leaders) and two Hindu Kaharingan religious figures. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model involving reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the Manenung ceremony is performed through preparatory stages, chanting of sacred mantras, and the invocation of the holy spirit Putir Santang. The ceremony functions religiously as a means of spiritual communication, socially as a medium of community solidarity, and educationally as a vehicle for transmitting cultural values. The symbolic meanings embedded in ritual instruments such as amak purun, baliung, tengang, and behas tawur reflect cosmic harmony between humans, nature, and the divine. This tradition remains relevant in preserving the cultural identity and spirituality of the Dayak Kaharingan community amid modernization, serving as a vital source of moral guidance and local wisdom.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively analyze the various challenges in preserving the Hindu Kaharingan tradition in Central Kalimantan amidst the rapid currents of globalization and modernization. Using a literature study method that examines previous research, the findings reveal that globalization has led to a decline in youth participation in ritual activities, a shift in spiritual values, and a transformation of local lifestyles toward more modern and pragmatic orientations. Nevertheless, the study specifically shows that the preservation of the Hindu Kaharingan tradition can still be sustained through the reinforcement of local wisdom values within formal and non-formal education systems, the optimization of the roles of traditional and religious leaders as cultural preservation agents, and the effective utilization of information technology and social media as tools for education and the dissemination of traditional values among the younger generation. Therefore, a collaborative and adaptive preservation strategy—through the synergy between local culture and technological advancement—has proven to be an effective approach to ensuring the continuity and relevance of the Hindu Kaharingan tradition in the modern era.

Abstract

Art in the Hindu perspective holds a fundamental position and is inseparable from religious rituals. Artistic works are a form of devotion and a longing to connect with the very source of art itself, while also fulfilling human needs in daily life. Hindu art is derived from the sacred Vedic scriptures, with specific art forms (such as expression, song, drama, and sentiment) originating from different Vedas. Artistic creativity is synonymous with religion, particularly in Hindu communities in Bali, where various art forms (dance, music, visual arts, voice) support the execution of rituals. Sacred art, which functions as an accompaniment to ceremonies, is created through a process involving religious initiation and sacralization, thus being believed to possess magico-religious power. The relationship between art and religion is so intimate that it becomes difficult to distinguish between religious practice and artistic performance. Art is also viewed as a symbol of Satyam (Truth), Siwam (Purity), and Sundharam (Beauty), and serves as a medium to facilitate the expression of devotion to God. Through the concept of Ngayah (selfless service), art is offered sincerely as a form of dedication. The preservation of sacred art, especially among the younger generation, is crucial for maintaining its continuity as part of Hindu identity and spirituality.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship and relevance between Arthur Schopenhauer’s philosophy and Hindu spiritual teachings, particularly as presented in the Bhagavadgītā. The research employs a library research approach using qualitative methods and a hermeneutic-philosophical framework. This approach is applied to interpret the texts and conceptual meanings in depth, both in Schopenhauer’s philosophy and in the metaphysical teachings of the Bhagavadgītā. The analysis reveals essential similarities between Schopenhauer’s idea of the denial of the will (Willensverneinung) as a path to liberation from suffering, and the Hindu concept of liberation (mokṣa) through knowledge and detachment from worldly attachments (vairāgya). Both are based on the understanding that suffering originates from desire and individual ego, and that liberation can only be attained through a transformation of consciousness toward a reality that transcends duality. However, a fundamental difference lies in the theological context: Schopenhauer rejects the concept of a personal God and emphasizes the immanent metaphysical aspect of reality, whereas the Bhagavadgītā positions Brahman as the ultimate consciousness, both transcendent and immanent. The study concludes that Schopenhauer’s philosophical thought can be understood as a rational reflection that resonates with the mystical-metaphysical dimension of Hindu teachings. This demonstrates a universal convergence between ethical, aesthetic, and spiritual principles that underpin thought in both Western philosophical traditions and Eastern spirituality.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the digital era has reshaped human technology relations, shifting AI from a mere instrumental tool to an active collaborative partner in data analysis, decision support, and innovation across multiple domains. This study examines the partnership between humans and AI through a philosophical lens informed by Hindu thought, aiming to articulate ethical resources that can guide responsible AI development and deployment. Employing a qualitative literature review, the research synthesizes scholarship on AI development, technology ethics, philosophy of technology, and Hindu ethical concepts. The review finds that Hindu principles particularly dharma (moral duty), karma (consequential responsibility), and Tri Hita Karana (harmonious relations among humans, nature, and the divine) offer a coherent normative framework for aligning AI design and use with social justice, accountability, and communal welfare. The study concludes that framing human AI relations as a moral partnership, rather than a purely technical arrangement, can help preserve human agency, mitigate algorithmic harms, and promote technology that supports sustainable well-being. The findings contribute a cross-cultural ethical perspective to contemporary debates on responsible AI.

Abstract

Kaharingan is the indigenous religion of the Dayak people in Central Kalimantan, characterized by its own distinct system of beliefs and rituals. One important element in its religious practice is the Basarah tradition. This article aims to examine the meaning and function of Basarah as a spiritual bridge between followers of Hindu Kaharingan, the spirit world, and Sang Hyang Hatala (God). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study applies Structural Functional Theory to explore the philosophical and social dimensions of Basarah within the religious framework of Hindu Kaharingan. The results of the study show that Basarah functions not only as a medium of spiritual communication, but also as a means of preserving spiritual values, fostering community cohesion, and strengthening religious identity.

Abstract

Bhrunaha, or abortion, in Hindu teachings is regarded not merely as a moral violation, but as a reflection of a crisis of moral consciousness in modern human life. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of bhrunaha from the perspective of Hindu philosophy through ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions. The research employs a qualitative method using a library research approach with descriptive-interpretative analysis. Data sources were obtained from Hindu philosophical texts, scholarly literature, and relevant social and psychological theories, including social construction theory, symbolic interactionism, and desire theory. The findings reveal that ontologically, life in Hindu teachings is understood to exist since conception, making bhrunaha a violation of the sacred essence of life. Epistemologically, the weakening of moral consciousness is influenced by permissive social constructions and shifts in the meaning of sexuality within modern social interactions. Meanwhile, axiologically, the phenomenon reflects a transformation of values from sacred orientations toward pragmatic considerations, where moral decisions are often shaped by social pressure, fear, and the domination of desire. The integration of these theoretical perspectives demonstrates that bhrunaha cannot be understood solely as an individual moral issue, but also as the result of interactions between social reality, symbolic meaning, and psychological impulses in modern society. This study concludes that the phenomenon of bhrunaha reflects a crisis of moral consciousness in which dharma no longer functions as the primary foundation in human moral decision-making.

Abstract

The transformation of social media has significantly reshaped patterns of social interaction and contributed to the emergence of polarization in digital spaces through the mechanisms of echo chambers and filter bubbles. These mechanisms reinforce confirmation bias, limit the diversity of perspectives, and foster exclusive social relationships. Consequently, various forms of symbolic violence have emerged, including stereotyping, prejudice, hate speech, cyberbullying, dehumanization, intolerance, and the erosion of social cohesion, particularly in sensitive issues such as religion and politics. This study aims to analyze the manifestations of polarization in digital spaces and examine the relevance of the Tat Twam Asi doctrine as a relational ethical framework for reconstructing moral awareness and fostering humane interactions in the digital era. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a netnographic method through digital observation and documentation of user interactions on Instagram. Research subjects were selected through purposive sampling based on predetermined research criteria. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, and were validated through source and methodological triangulation. The findings reveal that Instagram has undergone a functional shift from a public sphere for dialogue into an arena of identity contestation characterized by symbolic conflict. Social media algorithms contribute to the intensification of informational segregation, the reproduction of stereotypes, and affective polarization through the dissemination of emotional and controversial content. Contextual framing further encourages symbolic violence, negative stigmatization, and the reinforcement of prejudice. These conditions reflect an ethical crisis marked by declining empathy, social responsibility, and respect for human dignity. In response to these challenges, the Tat Twam Asi doctrine offers an ethical framework that emphasizes human interconnectedness, mutual respect, and moral responsibility. The internalization of the values of Ahimsa (nonviolence), Daya (compassion), and Satya (truthfulness) has the potential to promote digital communication that is more reflective, dialogical, inclusive, and civil. These findings affirm that polarization in digital spaces is shaped not only by technological and algorithmic factors but also by a crisis of moral consciousness. In this context, the Tat Twam Asi doctrine can serve as a philosophical and ethical foundation for developing a more humane, inclusive, and diversity-respecting digital ecosystem.

Abstract

This study examines the relevance of Hindu ecotheology in responding to ecological crises in the modern era. Environmental degradation, marked by increasing pollution, natural resource exploitation, and shifting lifestyles, reflects an imbalance in the relationship between humans and nature. In Hindu teachings, the concept of Tri Hita Karana emphasizes harmony among humans, God, and the environment as the foundation of a balanced life. This study aims to analyze the concept of ecotheology in Hinduism, explore its relevance to modern ecological crises, and identify the gap between spiritual values and ecological behavior in society. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature study approach, analyzing relevant scholarly sources and secondary data. The findings indicate that Hindu ecotheology provides a strong philosophical foundation for environmental ethics; however, its implementation faces challenges due to socio-economic transformations in modern society. The gap between spiritual values and ecological practices highlights the need to revitalize ecotheological values to make them more contextual and applicable. Therefore, the findings suggest that ecological issues are not merely associated with the existence of environmental values in Hindu teachings, but also with the extent to which these values are internalized and reflected in the ecological practices of modern society.
