Abstract

Limited proficiency in reading the Qur’an among students requires a systematic, measurable teaching method that can progressively improve reading accuracy. Yet, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the Al-Mahera method remains limited. This study aims to measure the improvement in students’ reading skills following Al-Mahera instruction and to analyze changes across specific aspects of reading proficiency. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. The sample consisted of 20 students from a Quranic recitation (taḥsīn) class, selected via purposive sampling from a total of 43 active students at Rumah Qur’an Amal Ikhlash. The intervention spanned 20 sessions, with data collected through oral pre- and posttests and observations. Analysis included descriptive statistics, a normality test, a paired-sample t-test, and the N-Gain score. Based on individual scores, the average reading proficiency increased from 44.00 to 64.35, a gain of 20.35 points. The Shapiro-Wilk test indicated a normal distribution of data (pretest p=0.097; posttest p=0.111), while the paired-sample t-test revealed a significant difference (p<0.001). The average N-Gain score was 0.371 (or 37.08%), falling into the moderate category. Analysis of specific indicators showed the greatest relative improvement in mad ṭabīʻī (natural elongation), followed by makhārijul ḥurūf (articulation points) and ghunnah (nasalization). These findings indicate meaningful improvement in proficiency, although causal claims about the effectiveness of the Al-Mahera method must be qualified because the study lacks a control group.

Abstract

In Muslim religious life, the concept of sustenance is often understood in material terms; however, the experiential dimensions—how congregants recognize, evaluate, and internalize rezeki through acts of worship—have received relatively little attention in “Living Qur’an” studies. This research aims to analyze congregational prayer (ṣalat) as a religious experience, the meaning of sustenance as internalized by congregants, the relationship between worship, human effort (ikhtiyār), and reliance on God (tawakal), as well as the embodiment of Qur’anic values within the religious experiences of the congregation at Masjid Musyawarah Medan Amplas. The study employs a qualitative method using the “Living Qur’an” approach. Primary data were gathered through observation, interviews with congregants, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of experience, meaning-making, reception, and religious orientation emerging from the field data. The results indicate that congregational prayer is understood as a religious experience that fosters tranquility, orderliness, spiritual closeness, and a sense of community through ritual repetition and collective engagement. Sustenance is perceived in diverse ways, encompassing not only income and material wealth but also health, family, peace of mind, ease in affairs, opportunities for doing good, and a sense of contentment. Congregational prayer serves as a context for reinforcing spiritual orientation in the pursuit of a livelihood; meanwhile, ikhtiar is understood as a human responsibility, and tawakal as a means of coping with uncertain outcomes. The embodiment of Qur’anic values occurs primarily through reflective reception of experiences rather than merely through the recitation of verses. These findings underscore the nature of the “Living Qur’an,” wherein Qur’anic values come to life through ritual practice and the ways congregants interpret their experiences of sustenance, without presupposing a direct causal link between worship and material success.
