Abstract

The centuries-long dominance of the tradition of Qur’anic interpretation, largely shaped by male experience, perspective, and scholarly authority, has given rise to debates regarding the representation of women in the production of exegetical knowledge and the legitimacy of women’s experiences as sources of religious meaning. This study aims to analyze women as interpretive subjects in feminist exegetical epistemology, explain the epistemological foundations that support this position, and identify the transformations it has brought about in contemporary Qur’anic studies. The method used is a qualitative approach grounded in literature review, combining the perspectives of exegetical epistemology and critical hermeneutics. Data were obtained from feminist exegetical literature and contemporary Qur’anic studies, then analyzed through content analysis and discourse analysis. The results of the study indicate that feminist exegetical epistemology critiques the construction of interpretive authority that tends to be masculine and reveals historical mechanisms that place women’s experiences outside the center of knowledge production. Through the reconstruction of sources, subjects, and interpretative processes, women’s experiences are affirmed as sources of knowledge that have equal epistemic legitimacy in understanding the Qur’anic text. This position affirms women as active epistemic subjects in the formation of meaning, broadens the horizon of interpretation, reexamines power relations within scientific authority, and encourages a more dialogical shift in the paradigm between text, interpreter, social context, and knowledge production. These findings affirm the contribution of feminist exegetical epistemology to the development of a more inclusive, reflective, and open methodology for Qur’anic studies, without neglecting academic principles and the scientific rules of exegesis.

Abstract

The prohibition of alcohol in the Qur’an is an example of the gradual transformation of religious regulations in Medina society, which previously recognized the production, distribution, and consumption of intoxicating beverages. Studies on the alcohol verses have developed from the perspective of Islamic interpretation and law. At the same time, analysis of market responses and economic adaptation mechanisms during the tashrīʻ (law-making) process remains relatively limited. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the stages of alcohol prohibition, changes in people’s economic behavior, and the process of market reorganization in the early Islamic period. The study uses a qualitative literature approach with historical methods, a socio-economic history approach, mawḍūʻī interpretation, and a historical-critical analysis of alcohol verses, hadith, and early Islamic historical sources. The results show a pattern of economic adjustment that occurred along with the development of the stages of alcohol prohibition. The phase of recognizing moral and social risks drove changes in public perception of alcohol commodities. The phase of limiting consumption involves reducing the use of public spaces. The total prohibition phase was met by halting circulation, destroying stocks, and shifting economic activity toward commodities recognized within the Islamic economic framework. Historical data demonstrate a high level of collective compliance, minimal indications of organized economic resistance, and a relatively stable reorganization of market relations. These findings suggest that gradual tashrīʻ served as an instrument of socio-economic change, facilitating the acceptance of new norms while supporting market stability in Medinan society during the early Islamic period.

Abstract

The development of the Living Qur’an study has broadened the understanding of the Qur’an not only as a normative text, but also as a social practice that is lived and interpreted in everyday life. However, studies on Qur’an memorization are still dominated by technical and pedagogical discussions, so the process of forming a Qur’anic habitus through the tradition of memorization has not been explored in depth. The Al-Munif Tahfidz House becomes a relevant social arena to study the mechanisms of internalization and reproduction of Qur'anic values through the daily practices of students. This study aims to analyze the formation of a Qur’anic habitus through the tradition of memorizing the Qur’an at the Al-Munif Tahfidz House from the Living Qur’an perspective. The research uses a qualitative approach based on the Living Qur’an study with data collection through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, which are analyzed interpretively using Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus theory. The findings show that the tradition of memorization functions as a Living Qur’an practice that presents the Qur’an in everyday space through the routine of memorization, time discipline, muraja’ah, habituation of worship, and pedagogical interactions between the ustaz and students. This process internalizes Qur’anic values that are manifested in religious dispositions, behavioral patterns, learning ethos, and social identities of students, and is continuously reproduced through institutional culture, role models, and collective practices. This study strengthens the Living Qur’an perspective in understanding memorization as a social practice that forms a religious habitus and contributes to the development of a Qur’anic education model oriented towards character formation and Qur’anic culture.

Abstract

Strengthening the academic capacity of students in Islamic higher education institutions is a strategic agenda for developing superior human resources and establishing a scientific culture that is responsive to social challenges. Scholarship programs play a crucial role in increasing access to education, developing competencies, and fostering academic character grounded in Qur’anic values. This study examines the Smart Light Generation Scholarship Program at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra through the perspective of Surah al-Mujādilah verse 11 and Surah al-Tawbah verse 122, which emphasize the virtue of knowledge, the elevation of the status of knowledgeable people, the deepening of knowledge, and the social responsibility of science. The study’s objectives include an analysis of the normative foundation, the suitability of the program design, the dynamics of strengthening students’ academic capacity, and the development of an academic culture grounded in Qur’anic values. A qualitative approach with a case study design and thematic interpretation analysis (mawḍūʻī) was employed, using in-depth interviews, observations, and document studies. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion, and source triangulation. The results show that Surah al-Mujādilah verse 11 and Surah al-Tawbah verse 122 provide a solid normative foundation for strengthening academic capacity; the design of the Smart Light Generation Scholarship Program aligns with the orientation of scientific development; the program implementation increases learning motivation, academic productivity, participation in scientific forums, leadership skills, and academic networks; and encourages the formation of an academic culture that emphasizes scientific social responsibility. These findings have implications for the development of scholarship policies in Islamic universities that are oriented towards strengthening academic capacity and internalizing Qur’anic values.

Abstract

The problems in preparing an interpretation research proposal reveal the tension between the classical epistemological framework and contemporary methodological demands, which often leads to unclear scientific foundations, inconsistent approaches, and weak scientific argumentation. The purpose of this study is to formulate a systematic epistemological model as a conceptual basis for designing an interpretation research proposal that is coherent, analytical, and relevant to the development of Qur’anic science. A qualitative approach based on a literature study is used, through critical reading of the interpretation literature, research methodology, and epistemological theory, with an epistemological-critical orientation. The results of the study show four main findings: first, identification of epistemological foundations that include sources of knowledge, validity of interpretation, and ontological framework of the text; second, mapping of methodological problems in the form of reductionism of approach, inconsistency between problem formulation and method, and minimal integration of context; third, formulation of the ideal structure of the proposal that includes coherence between the background, problem formulation, objectives, theoretical framework, method, and scientific contribution; fourth, epistemological integration emphasizes the dialectical relationship between text, interpreter, and context in the research process. Scientific implications confirm this model’s contribution to improving the quality of interpretive research proposals, making them more systematic, critical, and contextual, thereby strengthening the sustainable development of Qur’anic research.

Abstract

The childfree phenomenon in contemporary Muslim communities demonstrates a shift in family orientation that challenges the normative construction of offspring as an integral part of religious life, particularly when linked to the concept of children’s sustenance in the Qur’an, which has been understood within established theological and social frameworks. This study aims to examine in depth Buya Hamka’s interpretation in Tafsir al-Azhar regarding the concept of children’s sustenance and assess its conceptual relevance in responding to the childfree discourse that is developing in modern society. A qualitative approach based on literature studies is used, employing thematic interpretation methods to trace verses related to sustenance and offspring, and is then analyzed using an interpretative-critical approach to identify Hamka’s argumentation patterns and epistemological orientations. The results of the study show that the construction of children’s sustenance in the Qur’an not only refers to material security but also reflects the relationship of human existential dependence on God, encompassing spiritual, ethical, and social dimensions in an integrated manner. Hamka’s interpretation displays a rational-religious character that emphasizes the balance between human endeavor and belief in the guarantee of sustenance, while simultaneously criticizing the reduction of sustenance’s meaning to mere economic calculations. In the context of childfree life, this framework demonstrates the tension between modern rationality, grounded in life planning, and the theological paradigm regarding the blessings of offspring and the family’s moral responsibility. The implications of this study enrich contemporary exegetical discourse through a contextual reading of the verses about sustenance and offer a conceptual foundation for formulating Islam’s position on childfree choices in a more proportionate, reflective, and argumentative manner.

Abstract

The normative-textual interpretation approach often faces limitations in addressing the complexity of contemporary social problems, which are dynamic and multidimensional, thereby underscoring the urgency of strengthening the interpretation framework of al-Adabī al-Ijtimaʻī as a more contextual and responsive model. This paper aims to analyze the epistemological construction of the interpretation of al-Adabī al-Ijtimaʻī, unravel the methodological mechanisms used, examine the dynamics of responses to social reality, and evaluate its strengths and limitations in the development of contemporary interpretation studies. The method used is a qualitative study based on literature studies with an epistemological approach and critical analysis of relevant classical and modern literature. The results of the study show that the epistemology of the interpretation of al-Adabī al-Ijtimaʻī is integrative, synthesizing linguistic, literary, and social dimensions; contextual in reading the historical and sociological realities of society; and responsive in formulating solutions grounded in applicable Qur’anic values. This approach can provide adaptive interpretations of social justice, economic inequality, and cultural transformation while maintaining the coherence of the text’s meaning. However, limitations are identified in the interpreter’s potential for subjectivity and the challenge of maintaining methodological consistency. Theoretical implications point to strengthening the paradigm of interpretation grounded in scientific epistemology, thereby opening a more systematic and critical dialogue between text and reality in the development of contemporary interpretation methodology.

Abstract

The concept of cleanliness in the Qur’an holds a fundamental position as the basis for the formation of individual and social ethics. At the same time, contemporary exegetical studies still tend to separate the spiritual and physical dimensions, resulting in partial understandings. This paper aims to examine the concept of cleanliness in Hamka’s Tafsir al-Azhar integratively to construct a meaning that unites both dimensions within a complete epistemological framework. The method used is a qualitative approach based on literature studies with thematic interpretation techniques and a hermeneutic-contextual approach to interpret the verses on cleanliness comprehensively. The results of the analysis show a conceptual integration of external and internal cleanliness through an emphasis on the purity of the soul, disciplined worship, and social responsibility, as reflected in daily practice. Hamka’s interpretation constructs cleanliness as a multidimensional value system that connects personal ethics, physical health, and transcendental awareness in a mutually reinforcing unity. This integration demonstrates an interpretive orientation that is both contextual and normative, with strong relevance to modern problems such as environmental degradation and moral crisis. The academic implications confirm Hamka’s significant contribution to the development of integrative interpretation studies that connect normative, ethical, and practical dimensions, while enriching the hermeneutic approach in understanding the Qur’an holistically and contextually.

Abstract

The contemporary moral crisis among Muslim youth demands strengthening strategies for internalizing Qur’anic moral values within educational institutions, drawing on the classical Islamic boarding school tradition. This study aims to analyze the structure of moral values in the Waṣayā al-Ābā’ lil-Abnā’ Book, examine the internalization patterns applied at the Al-Yusufiyah War-Ridwaniyah Islamic Boarding School, examine the dialectic between normative texts and the context of educational practice, and identify the manifestations of values in the lives of students. A qualitative approach is used with a field study design through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and the data are then analyzed thematically and critically to find integrated patterns of meaning. The results of the study show that the structure of moral values in the book comprises dimensions of personal etiquette, social relations, and spiritual responsibility, which are internalized through habituation, exemplary behavior by kyai, repetition of texts, and social control rooted in Islamic boarding school culture. The dialectic of text and context shapes the transformation of values from normativity to ethical praxis, alive in the daily lives of students, as reflected in the discipline of worship, communication ethics, and collective awareness of the values of simplicity and respect. Academic contributions lie in strengthening the integrative model of value internalization, based on turath’ books, that combines cognitive, affective, and practical dimensions, while also offering a new conceptual framework for the study of Islamic boarding school moral education oriented towards sustainable character formation.

Abstract

The dynamics of urban family relations demonstrate shifts in authority, role negotiations, and the intensification of equality values that often clash with Qur’anic norms regarding family leadership. The focus of this study is the concept of qiwāmah in Hamka’s Tafsir al-Azhar and its relevance in a pluralistic, complex modern context. A qualitative approach based on literature studies is used, employing thematic and contextual interpretation analysis to examine verses on family leadership and Hamka’s interpretation within a socio-cultural framework. The results of this study reinterpret qiwāmah as ethical leadership grounded in responsibility, moral capacity, and competence, rather than in gender-based structural domination. Hamka’s interpretation displays conceptual flexibility that creates space for a proportional distribution of roles in urban families, while emphasizing the principles of justice, deliberation, and collective responsibility. The dialectic between text and context demonstrates the integration of Qur’anic normative values with contemporary social realities through adaptive readings that maintain the substance of the teachings without ignoring social change. These findings strengthen the position of contextual interpretation as an approach capable of bridging the tension between religious norms and the transformation of the modern family, while also providing theoretical contributions to the development of thematic interpretation studies and Islamic family studies in the global urban landscape.
