Abstract

The complexity of the meaning of ṣalawāt in Surah al-Ahzab: 56 gives rise to differences in interpretation between the normative, theological, and spiritual dimensions, thus demanding an approach capable of reaching layers of inner meaning in an integrative manner. This need underscores the relevance of Sufi interpretation in understanding the relationship among Allah, angels, and humans in the construction of ṣalawāt. The focus of this study is on analyzing the construction of the meaning of ṣalawāt in the Tafsīr Rūḥ al-Bayān by examining its semantic structure and underlying epistemological framework. A qualitative approach based on a literature review is used, employing the thematic interpretation method (mawḍūʻī) combined with the ishārī approach to uncover the symbolic and spiritual dimensions. The results of this study indicate a layered differentiation in the meaning of ṣalawāt, including transcendent praise of Allah, requests for mercy from the angels, and human spiritual praxis oriented towards self-purification. The semantic structure demonstrates the interrelationship between language, theology, and inner experience, while theological relations emphasize the Prophet’s position as the axis of spiritual mediation. The Sufi dimension leads to the internalization of ṣalawāt as a path to the soul’s perfection through awareness of the Divine presence in worship. The epistemology of interpretation in Rūḥ al-Bayān demonstrates the integration of external and internal meanings through directed spiritual intuition. The implications of this study advance tafsīr studies by offering an integrative framework that connects textual analysis, depth of meaning, and spiritual experience for understanding the verses of the Qur’an.

Abstract

The construction of political authority and the configuration of social elites in the Qur’an require a reading that goes beyond a normative approach that is often merely descriptive, as such a framework often ignores the dynamics of meaning that form within the network of Qur’anic concepts. This study aims to uncover the meaning structure of Ūlī al-Amr and al-Malā’ and the conceptual relationship between them through Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic approach. The method used is qualitative, based on a literature study, with an analysis of the basic meaning as the lexical meaning attached to the word, as well as the relational meaning formed in the field of meaning through its relationship with other concepts in the Qur’an. The results of the study show that Ūlī al-Amr has a relational character as a normative authority that gains legitimacy through its attachment to the values of revelation, obedience, and moral responsibility in maintaining social order. On the other hand, al-Malā’ represents a social elite that operates within a framework of power based on status, wealth, and collective influence, with a tendency to build dominance and resistance to the messages of the prophets. The conceptual relationship between the two demonstrates a dichotomy between authority grounded in normative legitimacy and power rooted in social hegemony. The theoretical implications of this study emphasize the Qur’an’s conceptual distinction between legitimate, ethically oriented authority and power structures that tend to uphold the interests of dominant groups.

Abstract

The increasing challenges of food safety due to biological and chemical contamination, the decline in the nutritional quality of modern consumer products, and the high prevalence of diet-related non-communicable diseases indicate the need to strengthen the food paradigm that is oriented not only to legal aspects but also to health. In this context, studies on food in Islam are still dominated by discussions of halal. At the same time, the dimension of ṭayyib has not received adequate attention as a concept related to consumption quality and health protection. This study aims to analyze the concept of ṭayyib in the Qur’an through the perspective of scientific interpretation and examine its relevance to food safety, nutritional value, and preventive health. The method used is a qualitative research study based on a literature review, with a mawḍūʻī interpretation approach to verses containing the term ṭayyib, supported by analysis of classical, modern, and contemporary interpretation literature and by dialogue with findings from food, nutrition, and health sciences. The study results show that the concept of ṭayyib encompasses a range of meanings that extend beyond formal halal certification, emphasizing safety from harmful elements, adequate and balanced nutritional content, food quality, and an orientation toward preventing health risks. This concept forms a consumption paradigm that prioritizes human biological well-being by selecting foods that are safe, nutritious, and support the maintenance of bodily functions. The analysis also demonstrates substantial alignment between the concept of ṭayyib and modern scientific principles regarding food safety, nutritional adequacy, and preventive medicine. These findings confirm that the concept of ṭayyib can be positioned as a normative and scientific framework that bridges Qur’anic studies with contemporary health sciences.

Abstract

The practice of reciting Surah al-Takāṡur in the marzoah tradition in Islamic cemeteries in Medan City represents a form of Qur’an reception that lives within the socio-religious space while simultaneously emphasizing the urgency of a living Qur’an approach to understanding the dynamic relationship between the sacred text and death-ritual practices. The study focuses on analyzing the pattern of community reception, the construction of meaning attached to Surah al-Takāṡur, and the relationship between the text and death-memorialization practices in the local context. A qualitative approach based on the living Qur’an is used, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using a thematic-interpretive framework to uncover layers of symbolic and functional meaning. The findings show variations in reception patterns that include performative, spiritual, and communal dimensions; Surah al-Takāṡur is understood as an eschatological reminder, an instrument for reflection on mortality, and a medium for strengthening social solidarity in death rituals. The construction of meaning develops through the interaction between normative teachings, local traditions, and the collective experiences of the congregation, resulting in an integration between textual messages and social practices. The relationship between text and practice demonstrates an adaptive negotiation of meaning, where Qur’anic recitation is not merely a symbolic ritual but a means of internalizing values and shaping the community’s religious identity. The implications of this study enrich the theoretical framework of the living Qur’an and provide an empirical contribution to understanding the contextual and meaningful layers of Muslim religious practice.

Abstract

The practice of slaughtering cattle in the event of death in some Muslim communities raises normative tensions when confronted with the concept of taʻāwun in Surah al-Mā’idah: 2, which emphasizes cooperation in virtue and piety. This phenomenon shows the ambiguity between social solidarity and the potential shift in the value of worship into a socio-economic burden that causes problems. The study focuses on the interpretive dialogue between Tafsir Ibn Kaṡīr and Tafsir al-Misbah to examine the construction of the meaning of taʻāwun and its relevance in assessing the social practice of death. A qualitative approach based on literature studies is used, with a comparative analysis of the interpretations of both commentators, accompanied by a contextual reading of social reality. The results of the analysis show differences in epistemological orientation; Ibn Kaṡīr emphasizes the normative-textual dimension by affirming the boundary between virtue and practices that have the potential to lead to bidʻah, while Quraish Shihab offers a contextual reading with an emphasis on the value of benefit, social empathy, and the rationality of practice. The main findings indicate that taʻāwun is not merely symbolic cooperation, but rather an ethical principle that requires proportionality, non-burdensomeness, and alignment with the objectives of sharia. Theoretical implications point to strengthening an integrative approach to social interpretation. In contrast, practical implications emphasize the need to reconstruct traditions to align with collective virtues without creating socio-economic pressure on society.

Abstract

The culture of flexing among Muslim youth in the digital space has developed as an expression of social status based on the display of wealth published through social media, giving rise to a symbolic orientation towards material things as well as a shift in ethical values in interpreting wealth, so that reading the Qur’an becomes important as a normative basis for responding to this phenomenon. The purpose of this study focuses on analyzing the construction of the meaning of wealth in Surah al-Qaṣaṣ verses 76–82 according to al-Qurṭubī and its relevance to contemporary flexing practices. The approach used is qualitative, based on literature studies with the thematic interpretation method (mawḍūʻī), making Tafsir al-Qurṭubī the main reference through textual, thematic, and contextually critical analysis to interpret the relationship between the narrative of Qārūn and modern social phenomena. The study’s findings demonstrate the interpretation of wealth as a moral test that demands a balance between ownership and ethical awareness, where arrogance, ostentation, and denial of the social dimension are positioned as value deviations. In contrast, social responsibility, humility, and a utilitarian orientation become the primary principles. The practice of flexing is understood as transforming the meaning of wealth into a performative symbol that has the potential to obscure the ethical purpose of wealth ownership, thus giving rise to a consumerist and existential culture. The study’s implications emphasize the importance of internalizing the ethical values of the Qur’an in controlling the expression of wealth in the digital space so that it remains oriented towards social welfare.

Abstract

The practice of offerings persists in some Muslim communities as an expression of local traditions believed to have symbolic and protective functions. At the same time, Islamic teachings emphasize the purity of monotheism, thus creating normative tensions between culture and religious texts. The focus of this study is to test the validity of the practice of offerings through the recitation of Surah al-Baqarah verse 170, to assess its suitability from the perspective of the Qur’an. A qualitative case study-based approach was applied in Sumberejo Village, Pagar Merbau District through field observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic interpretation to link the meaning of the verse to social reality. The results show that the practice of offerings is built on social constructions inherited from generation to generation, reinforced by cultural authority and collective beliefs about salvation. The analysis of the verse reveals criticism of the attitude of following traditions without rational basis and revelation, so that the practice of offerings is considered to have no legitimacy within the framework of monotheism. The validity test shows the inconsistency between local practices and the basic principles of Islamic teachings that reject all forms of symbolic intermediaries in requests for protection. The implications of this study enrich the development of contextual interpretations that are responsive to cultural realities and emphasize the dynamic relationship between religion and tradition in contemporary Muslim society.

Abstract

An integrative study of Qur’anic interpretation and biology is important to broadening understanding of the behavioral phenomena of living creatures mentioned in the sacred text, especially ants and spiders, which have unique social and ecological characteristics. The purpose of this study is to confirm the analysis of the interpretation of Tafsir al-Munīr on Surah al-Naml verses 18–19 and al-‘Ankabūt verses 41–42 and assess its relevance to modern biological findings on communication, colony structure, and survival strategies. The method used is a qualitative literature study based on a thematic interpretation (mawḍūʻī) approach combined with interpretative-critical and comparative analysis to link textual meanings with contemporary scientific data. The results of the study show a significant correspondence between the Qur’anic description of the organized communication system of ants and biological findings related to chemical signals and colony coordination, as well as the depiction of spider webs as fragile structures that align with the material properties of their webs from a scientific perspective. Differences emerge in the symbolic dimension, which enriches ethical and reflective meaning beyond empirical explanation, thus presenting a depth of meaning that science cannot fully grasp. The implications of this study strengthen the contribution of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of interpretation and science, while maintaining the integrity of the text’s theological dimension without reducing its meaning.

Abstract

The increasing divorce rate in various regions of Indonesia has created serious problems for children’s psychological resilience. At the same time, conventional approaches to family psychology tend to be partial and have not been integrated with the normative values of the Qur’an. The focus of this study is directed at identifying resilience values in Surah al-Ṭalaq and al-Nisā’, mapping the empirical conditions of children after divorce in Sijambi Village, and formulating a contextual, Qur’an-based resilience model. An integrative qualitative approach was used through a thematic interpretation study (mawḍūʻī) and a field study using data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, which were then analyzed using thematic and interactive models. The main findings indicate the existence of resilience values in the Qur’an, including dimensions of spiritual strengthening, emotional regulation, social responsibility, and child welfare guarantees, which function in both preventive and curative ways. Empirical conditions show variations in children’s resilience levels, influenced by the quality of family relationships, social support, and economic stability after divorce. The gap between normative values and social practices is still evident in the weak internalization of religious values in parenting. The formulation of an integrative, contextual, and applicable Qur’an-based resilience model has implications for strengthening family, educational, and community interventions in sustainably building children’s resilience.
