Abstract

Online men's cosmetic advertisements not only sell beauty products but also redefine the concept of masculinity by promoting self-care without losing manliness. This research aims to uncover myths of masculinity in specific men's cosmetic advertisements from a Barthesian semiotic perspective. This study is a qualitative research type. The data in this research consist of sentences contained in men's cosmetic advertisements, and the data source is images/advertisements of men's cosmetics online. The method used in data collection is the free observation method. Researchers browse men's cosmetic advertisements online, then listen to the messages contained in them. After the data is collected, the researcher reduces and classifies it based on its type. Subsequently, the researcher analyzes the data, then interprets it. The data is studied using Barthesian semiotics by viewing advertisements as mythical discourse that has meanings, forms, and concepts of masculinity. The results show that men's cosmetic advertisements tend to build the myth of metrosexual masculinity. Additionally, they also advocate for environmentally friendly products and address ecofeminist issues.

Abstract

Language acquisition is a dynamic process, especially during the formative years of childhood. This research delves into the depths of psycholinguistics to explore the effectiveness of using cartoons as a dynamic tool in enhancing lexical enrichment in the development of English vocabulary. The study aims to ascertain the influence of cartoons on the development of students' English vocabulary using psycholinguistic theory. This research adopts a qualitative approach. The data for this study pertain to the development of students' English vocabulary, with cartoons serving as the primary source of data. Data were collected through participant observation, with the researcher observing students' language acquisition and lexical mastery in the classroom. Additionally, interviews were conducted with students and English language teachers regarding the enhancement of students' English vocabulary acquisition, employing the recording technique. Once the data were collected, the researcher transcribed the speech data into written form, documenting the vocabulary acquired by students after watching cartoons. Subsequently, the data underwent reduction, classification, and analysis. The results of this study indicate several influences of cartoons on the development of students' language skills, including enhanced understanding of the English language, acquisition of new vocabulary, improved listening skills, introduction to culture and context, enjoyable learning experiences, comprehension of expressions and emotions, and the cultivation of speaking skills. Consequently, cartoons can be considered valuable learning aids, although it is advisable to use them in conjunction with more structured learning methods, such as English courses, textbooks, or tutors, to achieve more optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study explores the transformative impact of a dynamic Question and Answer (Q&A) method on students' higher-order thinking skills. In an era where rote memorization dominates traditional classrooms, this research investigates an innovative pedagogical approach designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities among students. The study employs a mixed-methods research design, integrating qualitative and quantitative analyses to measure the effectiveness of the Q&A method. This research dissects the impact of the Q&A method on cognitive development. It delves into the theoretical foundations of higher-order thinking skills and examines how the interactive nature of the Q&A process stimulates intellectual curiosity. By intertwining challenging questions with collaborative problem-solving activities, educators are empowered to foster an environment where students not only learn but also think critically and creatively. The research results indicate that there are four questioning methods, namely narrative questioning, guessing objects answering method, questioning through body movements, and argumentative questioning. Preliminary findings hint at a positive correlation between the implementation of the Q&A method and significant strides in students' critical thinking abilities. This research goes beyond the conventional boundaries of academia, offering a transformative pedagogical approach that equips students with skills crucial for navigating the complexities of the modern world. By cultivating higher-order thinking skills, this study strives to empower students not only as knowledgeable individuals but as adaptable and innovative thinkers prepared to meet the challenges of the future head-on.

Abstract

In Indonesia, multilingualism is a common phenomenon, where individuals regularly switch between multiple languages and dialects in their daily communication. Within this multilingual environment, people often learn several words from their second (L2) or third (L3) language alongside their native tongue (L1). This study aims to investigate the primary linguistic features affected by interlingual interference among multilingual learners at IAIN Langsa and how the principles of Optimality Theory can help explain the observed patterns of interlingual interference in the language learning processes of these students, specifically those in the Arabic Education Department. To address these questions, the research focuses on the language spoken by multilingual learners proficient in Acehnese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Arabic at IAIN Langsa. Data collection involved fieldwork, interviews, and recordings, with five students as the research subjects. The study results indicate that interlingual interference has a multifaceted impact on multilingual learners in the Arabic Education Department at IAIN Langsa. The findings demonstrate that Acehnese phonology influences the development of Arabic words. This is evident in how Acehnese-Arabic speakers modify the final phoneme /d/ to /t/ in three words: [a.had] becomes [a.hat], [ah.mad] becomes [ah.mat], and [mau.lid] changes to [mo.lit]. Multilingual learners may transfer pronunciation patterns, intonation, and accent elements from their native languages into the target language, resulting in pronunciation difficulties and challenges in acquiring the phonological system of the target language.

Interviewing three English teachers who teach at madrasah which becomes pilot project for implementing Merdeka Curriculum, subsequently, the data is obtained indicating that they hold the perspective that the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English language learning has advantages in achieving material targets without rushing and in fostering student engagement, which is a requirement of the Merdeka Curriculum. According to them, these two aspects are positive outcomes of implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in English language learning. However, having positive aspects does not mean there are no challenges. The research subjects in this study stated that the biggest challenges in implementing the Merdeka curriculum in English language learning are understanding and accommodating the diversity of students’ character and learning styles, which will impact the determination of an effective model for English language instruction.
