Abstract

The purpose of this study is so that second semester students who take linear algebra courses are able to analyze their visualization understanding in solving problems presented with real life. Specifically we want to know: 1) how they understand the problem; 2) how to visualize the problem; 3) how they get the conclusion from their visualization; 4) how it impacts the course itself on the moodle e-learning platform. The type of research used is qualitative with descriptive-explorative methods, namely exploring all things that exist in the implementation of learning, processing problems and their answer steps, visualizing algebra, e-learning platforms, and exploring the results of surveys and interviews of students. The subjects in this study were all students who took elementary linear algebra courses in classes A1, A2, and B totaling 81 students who were gathered in one lecture class together in Building B of Tanjungpura University. Data from written tests, surveys, questionnaires, and responses were then explored descriptively to get conclusions in accordance with the problem formulation. Based on the analysis of several scientific journals on mathematical visual thinking skills in solving mathematical problems, visualization can improve the development of thinking, mathematical understanding from non-concrete to concrete. According to several journal sources reviewed, there are several ways to solve problems by implementing mathematics learning programs that increase learners' understanding and responsiveness when solving problems including: open minds approach, meansends learning, collaborative learning, trade-a-problems learning, problem and project based learning, visual thinking learning, RME, CTL, and eliminatin aplikation learning.

Abstract

Mathematics is one of the branches of science that continues to develop to meet human and technological needs. This means that students must improve their ability to think systematically, analytically, logically, critically, and creatively. The main problem in this study is how to describe students' critical thinking skills in solving math problems through the ethnomathematics approach. The purpose of this study is to describe students' critical thinking skills in solving math problems using the ethnomathematics approach, which combines mathematical materials with their local culture. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with research instruments in the form of tests and interviews involving data analysis from interviews and test answers.  The results showed that high ability students (KT1 and KT2) met all four indicators, namely interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. Students with low ability (KR1 and KR2) only fulfill two indicators, namely analysis and interpretation. This study also shows that the traditional game of dam-daman is effective in describing students' mathematical ability to think critically. To help low-ability students fulfill all critical thinking criteria, further research is needed.

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as an abstract discipline, detached from everyday life. However, mathematical concepts can actually be found within local cultures, one example being in the costume of Tari Lahbako, a traditional dance from Jember that represents the life of tobacco workers. This study aims to explore elements of ethnomathematics in the Tari Lahbako costume using a descriptive approach with ethnographic methods. Data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews at two dance studios: Sanggar Sweeta Collection and Sanggar Ninien Ariesitta. The results indicate that costume elements such as the hair bun, apron, skirt, and other accessories contain geometric shapes such as squares, circles, rhombuses, trapezoids, as well as concepts of reflection, parallel lines, and right angles. In addition, the presence of symmetrical patterns and regularity in the costume reveals an intuitive mathematical understanding by the designers. Therefore, the Tari Lahbako costume not only holds aesthetic and cultural value but also has great potential to be used as a medium for contextual mathematics learning. Through an ethnomathematical approach, students can understand mathematical concepts more concretely, meaningfully, and rooted in local wisdom

Abstract

This study employs the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) within a Research and Development (R&D) framework to develop a Moodle-based e-learning platform for enhancing mathematics learning motivation and self-directed among 9th-grade students at SMPN 1 Kota Bima. The research addresses two key issues: (1) Indonesia's low math competency (PISA score: 366) and (2) local findings showing 60% of target students scoring below minimum standards with observed low learning autonomy.Using the ADDIE model, the platform was developed with interactive features (structured materials, automated quizzes, discussion forums, and progress dashboards). Evaluation instruments included pre-post motivation questionnaires (Likert scale), self-regulated learning rubrics, and math achievement tests. Validation by material and media experts confirmed high feasibility (88% and 82%, respectively). Quantitative analysis revealed statistically significant improvements in the experimental class: motivation increased by 13.83 points (paired t-test, p < 0.01, g = 0.72 [high]), and self-directed learning by 17.66 points (p < 0.01, g = 0.64 [moderate]), surpassing the control class. The results demonstrate Moodle’s efficacy in fostering 21st-century skills (4C) through hybrid learning, aligned with Vygotsky’s constructivism (social interaction scaffolding) and Keller’s ARCS theory (attention-relevance-confidence-satisfaction). The study contributes actionable insights for technology-mediated math education, emphasizing structured, feedback-driven, and student-centered design.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the extent to which students comprehend and solve problems grounded in mathematical literacy. This research adopts a descriptive method with a qualitative approach to portray students’ comprehension in addressing mathematical literacy tasks. Students’ understanding is analyzed based on three indicators proposed by Ruseffendi: translation, interpretation, and extrapolation. The data collection techniques employed in this study include written tests and interviews. The written test is used to assess students’ mastery of the material, while interviews are conducted with selected participants to gain deeper insight into how they comprehend and solve the given problems. The study was conducted at SMP Lab Jenggawah, involving four student participants—two identified as having high mathematical ability and two with low mathematical ability. Students with high mathematical ability exhibited a strong level of comprehension, as demonstrated by their achievement across all three indicators: translation, interpretation, and extrapolation. Conversely, students with low mathematical ability tended to display limited comprehension, as they were only able to reach the levels of translation and interpretation, without attaining the extrapolation stage. Students with lower levels of mathematical ability encountered challenges such as limited comprehension of the contextual aspects of literacy-based problems and inaccuracies in performing calculations, especially at the extrapolation stage. These findings underscore the necessity of reinforcing instructional strategies that effectively foster mathematical literacy, with adaptations aligned to students’ varying levels of proficiency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe students' critical thinking skills in solving quadratic equation problems based on cognitive style. This research method uses a qualitative method using a cognitive style questionnaire and a critical thinking test. The subjects of this study were 6 students with field dependent cognitive styles and field independent cognitive styles. The results of the study stated that students who have a field dependent cognitive style cannot meet the critical thinking indicators because they cannot provide appropriate solutions. Students with a field independent cognitive style can meet all critical thinking indicators, namely interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. Based on this study, it is necessary to train students' critical thinking skills by providing everyday problems by paying attention to the cognitive style possessed by students
