Abstract

Purpose – This paper compares donor management in Indonesian zakat institutions. Then see how far the donation results are obtained. Design/methodology/approach – From the beginning, we followed qualitative rules with a case study approach in two national zakat institutions: the Inisiatif Zakat Indonesia (IZI) and the Lembaga Amil Zakat Nasional Dewan Dakwah (Laznas DD) Bengkulu Province Branch. Findings – Donor management determines the amount of donations received by zakat institutions. IZI emphasizes understanding donor characteristics through direct communication and social media. At the same time, Laznas DD focuses more on personal interaction through dawn activities and offers various donation methods. Laznas DD utilizes a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to maintain communication and increase donor satisfaction and loyalty. With various marketing strategies, both institutions have succeeded in expanding the reach of donors and optimizing zakat collection, increasing the effectiveness of fund management. Research implications – Our findings emphasize the importance of paying attention to the process and approach to donors. The ability to manage donors has a positive impact on the amount of zakat funds collected. Thus, practitioners need to adopt our findings or innovate to find appropriate strategies to maintain donors. Originality/value – Studies on philanthropic institution donors have been repeatedly reviewed. Unfortunately, donor management in the context of zakat institutions is forgotten. Our study fills this gap by comparing two zakat institutions in Indonesia. Keywords - Donor management, Zakat Institutions, Fundraising, Indonesia. Paper type - Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This paper reveals the indicators or qualifications used by Umar bin Khattab (634-644 AD) in the choosing of officials to manage public affairs. Design/methodology/approach – This research method entailed a meticulous examination and coding of classical Islamic texts. Furthermore, recent publications have contributed to the expansion of the available references. The narrative concerning Umar bin Khattab's selection and appointment of officials was meticulously catalogued, coded, and categorized to ensure the presentation of findings was both coherent and accessible. Findings – Umar bin Khattab utilized a multifaceted framework to assess the suitability of prospective public officers, incorporating criteria such as piety, professional competence, moral integrity, and adaptability. Each position necessitated a distinct set of criteria, yet piety, competence, and integrity were universally regarded as paramount virtues. A notable finding from Umar's government practice was his capacity to harmonize the spiritual and functional dimensions, thereby establishing a streamlined, effective, and public service-oriented bureaucratic structure. Research implications – The findings of this study can serve as a foundation of knowledge and consideration for the appointment of public officials in Muslim majority and -minority countries alike. Government practitioners may find inspiration in Umar's multidimensional approach, which establishes integrity and piety as the moral foundation, followed by competence and adaptability as the drivers of work effectiveness. Originality/value – Despite the numerous studies conducted on the reign of Umar ibn Khattab (13-23 H), there has been a dearth of literature that delves into the nuances of Umar's perspective on the role of a leader or statesman during this period. Keywords - Umar bin Khattab, Election of state officials, Islamic governance. Paper type - Review paper

Abstract

Purpose – The Indonesian government is promoting religious moderation as a counter-narrative to extremism and intolerance. The propagation of this ideology is facilitated by a variety of strategies, including the establishment of religious tolerance tourism villages. This article aims to elucidate the process of establishing a religious tourism village in Rama Agung Village, North Bengkulu Regency, Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach – This research has been in progress since 2022, with data collection and analysis ongoing until 2024. During this period, we engaged in repeated fieldwork, which included conducting in-depth interviews and observations, as well as participating in a series of village activities. The ethnographic procedure was meticulously divided into four stages: preliminary fieldwork, fieldwork, data processing and analysis, and the presentation of findings. The collected data was then subjected to a rigorous analysis using a systematic coding, categorization, and placement system. Findings – Despite initial rejection during its nascent stages, academics ultimately emerged as a pivotal element in the successful establishment of the five-religion tourist village in Rama Agung. This recognition was achieved after the village underwent various stages of development. The following stages were identified: 1) government support; 2) ideas and assistance from academics; 3) cross-sectoral coordination and the formation; 4) internal village coordination and the formation of the Interfaith Community Forum (FPUB); 5) tourist attractions; and 6) participation in competitions. Research implications – This article presents significant findings for practitioners in the field of religious tourism, underscoring the necessity for academics to be entrusted with the authority to develop innovations tailored to the potential of villages. This authority will ultimately result in the establishment of FPUB as a counterbalance in decision-making, thereby reducing conflicts and jealousy in villages. Originality/value – Research on religious tourism villages and tolerance villages remains sparse due to the nascent state of this model. Consequently, there is a necessity for efforts to document a variety of perspectives to increase knowledge. This is the inaugural study to delineate the process of establishing a tourism village based on five different religions. Keywords - Religious tourism, Tourism village, Stakeholders, Desa Rama Agung. Abstract

Purpose – The viability of Islamic charitable institutions is contingent upon the dedication of their benefactors. The present study aims to examine the effect of perceived value on Muslim charity commitment and to identify the factors that influence it. Design/methodology/approach – The approach used in this study is a quantitative approach, with the Pearson correlation method serving as the primary statistical tool. The data were collected through the administration of questionnaires distributed online to donors at Inisiatif Zakat Indonesia (IZI). The data analysis techniques employed included simple regression tests and coefficient of determination (R²) tests. Findings – The regression test analysis indicate a substantial and statistically significant relationship between perceived value and donor commitment, with a correlation value of r = 0.500. The regression equation Y = 11.122 + 0.500X demonstrates a direct correlation between an increase in perceived value and a concomitant increase in donor commitment, with a statistical significance of 0.500. The statistical significance of the relationship is confirmed by the p-value of 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05. Consequently, as the perceived value to the donor increases, so does their propensity to donate. A comprehensive analysis of the pertinent factors reveals three distinct categories: emotional, social, and quality factors. Furthermore, the R2 test results indicate a relationship between perceived value and variable donor commitment of 57.1%. The remaining 42.9% is influenced by other factors: trust, service satisfaction, transparency, accountability, identification with the organization, and previous experience. Research implications – This paper posits that it is imperative for the administrators of Islamic charitable institutions to attend to the needs of donors in the future. In addition to the religious obligation to give to one another, donors need to be informed about their contributions. Originality/value – The perceived value has been repeatedly tested at the organizational level. However, tests examining the influence of these variables on donor commitment in Islamic charities have been neglected.

Abstract

Purpose – This article aims to map studies on mosques published in Scopus between 2014 to 2023. Design/methodology/approach – A bibliometric approach was used in four steps: determining keywords and extracting article data using Publish or Perish (PoP), selecting and processing articles, processing Digital Object Identifier (DOI), and presenting the findings. Findings – Malaysia has been a leading contributor to the field of mosque studies, as evidenced by its dominance in terms of geographical distribution, institutional affiliation, and the authorship of scholarly works in this area. The mapping of studies was distributed across five primary subjects: architecture, building design, Malaysia, Muslim life, and mosque design methodology. Consequently, the field of mosque studies has been predominantly shaped by architectural scholarship in the past decade. Research implications – Mosques should prioritize aesthetic appeal and practical functionality as places of worship and community centers. Future researchers must expand the scope of inquiry beyond mere worship to encompass the multifaceted functionality of mosques. The implementation of optimal strategies facilitates the establishment of a societal framework that originates within the confines of the mosque. Originality/value – The field of mosque studies has undergone significant expansion; however, the existing literature is predominantly organized by thematic categories. Paper type Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the factors causing conflict within a religious institution, in this case, a mosque, and the reconciliation process. Design/methodology/approach – The ethnographic approach was employed as a qualitative research method due to the protracted and intricate nature of the conflict phase at Nasrullah Mosque in Bengkulu City, Indonesia. The data collection process was initiated in 2022, with the intensive phase of interviews taking place from June to December 2024. Findings – Poor financial transparency was identified as the underlying cause of the problems that arose at Nasrullah Mosque. The failure of mosque administrators to furnish financial reports resulted in the manipulation of the mechanism for replacing mosque leaders. Ethnic issues and differences in religious practices were used to remove several leaders who were critical of the accountability of mosque funds. Research implications – The findings of this study are of particular utility to practitioners and mosque administrators, as they underscore the necessity for enhanced transparency, accountability, and effective communication in the resolution of conflicts. Originality/value – Disputes over mosque management rights are seldom documented in an ethnographic context. A substantial body of research has previously focused on conflicts between mosques and their surrounding communities. Paper type - Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the effect of Islamic organizational culture (IOC) on innovative work behaviour (IWB), with flexible work arrangements (FWA) serving as a mediator variable. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative study methodology was utilized, employing questionnaires as the primary instrument for data collection, with data analyzed using SPSS version 26. The Sobel test was utilized to evaluate the mediating affect. The entire sample comprised 59 responders from six Islamic philanthropic institutions. Findings – The findings indicate that IOC exerts a positive and significant influence on FWA. Furthermore, there exists a notable positive and significant relationship between IOC and IWB. Additionally, FWA are shown to significantly enhance IWB. Nevertheless, the FWA does not serve as a mediator in the relationship between the IOC and the IWB. Research implications – The results affirm the significance of fostering Islamic principles that correspond with adaptable work policies to encourage innovative work behavior. Institutions ought to establish value-based frameworks (trust, fairness, integrity) and incorporate them into human resource practices, leadership, performance assessment, competency enhancement, and reward mechanisms. Originality/value – This study offers empirical data about the mediating function of FWA in the relationship between IOC and (IWB), utilising a sample of Islamic charitable institutions; it enhances the literature on value-based organizational behavior in a non-corporate context. Abstract

Purpose – This study explores the meaning of volunteerism for Generation Z Muslims who are active in social-religious organizations. The present study is noteworthy not only due to the dearth of extant research on the subject, but also in light of the observed decline in social cohesion, the rise of individualism, and the pernicious influence of the virtual world. Design/methodology/approach – A phenomenological approach was used to discover the deepest meaning for Generation Z Muslims at Madrasah Relawan Bengkulu (MRB). The spiral method was used to conduct repeated interviews with eight informants who were registered as active volunteers at MRB. Non-participatory observation and documentation were used as supplementary methods. The transcription, coding and thematic analysis procedures were carried out meticulously. The systematic writing of the research results followed the thematic analysis, with the discussion exploring only two novel aspects. Findings – This study found five themes in the meaning of volunteerism: social sensitivity (altruism), emotional satisfaction, organizational activism, charitable connectors, and da'wah motivation. Two unexpected findings that emerged were: 1) the role of volunteers as charity connectors, who link donors with beneficiary communities; and 2) the self-motivation to preach, which views volunteerism as part of practizing Islam. Research implications – Social-religious organizations need to design volunteer program that can develop social involvement and spiritual commitment, in order to maintain the sustainability of volunteer participation. Originality/value – The originality of this research lies in its emphasis on the dual role of Generation Z Muslim volunteers as agents of charity and Islamic preaching. Paper type - Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study analyzes the evolution of digital marketing strategies used by Hajj and Umrah travel agencies in Indonesia from 2021 to 2025. Design/methodology/approach – A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach was used to collect data, analyze, assess, and conclude articles. Data analysis took place between 2021 and 2025. Findings – From 850 articles identified, 118 were selected for analysis. The findings show a major shift from traditional marketing approaches toward fully integrated digital strategies. By 2023–2025, digital marketing became the primary tool for competition, with agencies relying on websites, SEO, social media, paid ads, WhatsApp Business, and content-based engagement to build trust and attract pilgrims. Research implications – The study concludes that digital marketing is now essential for maintaining competitiveness in the Hajj and Umrah industry and highlights the need for personalized digital experiences and continuous adaptation to consumer behavior. Originality/value – Previous research has focused on the interplay of digital marketing, but few studies have focused on the transformation of digital marketing in Umrah travel agencies.
