Abstract

This study explores the function and meaning of triangular decorative patterns (tumpal) on ancient tombstones in Central Lombok as a form of cultural heritage imbued with spiritual, aesthetic, social, and historical values. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and symbolic analysis, the research documents various motifs such as patra styled in jvala, winged sankha, padma, vegetal scrolls, and bamboo shoots, applied as both explicit and implicit tumpal forms. The findings reveal that these decorations serve magical, symbolic, aesthetic, and historical functions, as well as indicators of social stratification. Additionally, the motifs convey spiritual, cosmological, and life-death philosophy meanings deeply rooted in Lombok's local beliefs. The presence of Balinese and Hindu-Buddhist motifs on Islamic tombs indicates a strong cultural acculturation process. This study shows that decorative elements are not merely ornamental, but are visual representations of belief systems and cultural values passed down through generations.

Abstract

The 21st-century research ecosystem highlights the importance of non-traditional outputs such as datasets and software, alongside articles and books. In the Humanities, digital technologies enable data to be presented more openly through online databases. This paper introduces VerbInd, an open-access online database of morphologically complex verbs in Indonesian, built from corpus texts and processed through computational morphological parsing with further manual verification and editing. The paper demonstrates the use of VerbInd in quantitative research on Indonesian verbal morphology and morphosyntax (particularly voice alternation), resulting in traditional outputs, namely book chapters. It also briefly compares VerbInd with the sixth edition of the online Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), emphasizing their potential complementarity as linguistic research resources.

Abstract

This study investigated the faithful translation features of ChatGPT in translating figurative language from English to Indonesian, using Newmark’s (1988) faithful translation theory. It applied a qualitative descriptive method by inputting selected lyric lines into ChatGPT and comparing the outputs closely with the source text. The data were taken from Taylor Swift’s song “You’re Losing Me” and classified into metaphors, hyperboles, and ironies. Each translation was assessed based on how well it preserved contextual meaning, imagery, and stylistic effect while still sounding natural in Indonesian. The findings show that ChatGPT often produced translations aligned with faithful translation principles, especially when expressions were culturally transferable. However, it showed limitations in rendering culturally embedded or emotionally expressions. Overall, ChatGPT can function as a useful preliminary tool, but post-editing and collaboration with human translators remain essential to ensure accuracy, tone, and interpretive depth.

Abstract

Community Learning Centres (CLCs), which are the main features of the Adult Education and Training system, offer necessary second-chance learning opportunities for out-of school youth, and adults who have never been to school or have dropped out early. Educator absenteeism, however, has, for a long time, been the major factor that has led to a decrease in public trust in such centres and, consequently, their effectiveness. The aim of the research was to explore the effect of teachers' moonlighting on absenteeism, teaching quality, and retention in South African CLCs. For this purpose, the study employed thematic analysis in line with Braun and Clarke's six (2021) step method to process secondary data obtained from previous research and institutional reports. This meticulous method of coding, gathering, and polishing themes made it possible to recognize the essential patterns of teacher behaviour and school issues. The research concluded that teachers take additional jobs just to meet the demands of their socio-economic lives. Educators' low salaries, their financial commitments, and the ever-rising demands of the household are a few of the factors that push teachers to find other jobs. Research findings show that moonlighting has a direct negative impact on teaching quality, as teachers have less time to prepare their lessons, deliver them, and interact meaningfully with students.

The text teaches us how to behave by emphasizing aesthetic, and ethic to all communities. This research gives positive impacts for applied linguistics development especially SFL and Semiotics. Abstract

Derivation is a morphological process that enriches vocabulary through affixation, particularly prefixation and suffixation, which may change both grammatical category and meaning. This study examines the derivational processes of the emotional adjective marah (“angry”) in Indonesian using data from the Leipzig Corpus. The data were analyzed with AntConc and SketchEngine through morphosemantic and syntactic analyses within a qualitative descriptive approach. The study aims to explain how marah undergoes derivation and how its derived forms function syntactically in Indonesian, especially from a linguistic typology perspective. The findings reveal patterns of morphological productivity and semantic variation in the derivation of emotion-related words. In term of linguistic, , this study contributes to a deeper understanding of adjective-based derivation in Indonesian, while theoretically it offers insights for typological morphology and corpus-based lexicographic research.
