Abstract

The short story Ngantosang Ulungan Bulan by Carma Mira reflects Balinese culture within the context of social life and romance, particularly related to the custom that forbids a younger sibling from marrying before the elder. The main character experiences inner conflict because both of the older siblings remain unmarried for their own reasons. This story emphasizes the importance of preserving Balinese cultural identity amid the current of social change and conveys a moral message about respect for family and tradition. This study aims to reveal the meanings contained in the story using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The analysis is conducted through five main codes: hermeneutic, connotative, symbolic, action, and cultural. Through this approach, cultural values, traditional symbols, and the tension between modernity and custom can be explored. As a literary work written in the Balinese language, the story also demonstrates the importance of regional language as a medium for cultural preservation and the expression of community identity.

Abstract

This article is based on library research after watching the Netflix four-episode limited series "Adolescence". By collecting information from published materials, this article attempts to provide an understanding of the words ‘incel’, ‘the manosphere’, and ‘toxic masculinity’ which become issues addressed in "Adolescence"  and to show how the issues are portrayed in the British miniseries. Socio-psychological approach is used to examine Jamie, the main character, who is given the label of an incel by Katie, his schoolmate and to examine Jamie’s father, Eddie. The findings of the library research reveal that the meaning of the word 'incel’ (involuntary celibate) has shifted from its original meaning coined in 1997. Incel in the manosphere, which is a cluster of online communities with misogynistic and toxic masculinity contents, has become negative movement against women since 2012. Jamie learns toxic masculinity from his father and the manosphere. His exposure to toxic content in the manosphere has fueled his resentment after being rejected by Katie and has triggered him to kill her.

Abstract

Capitalistic ideas of beauty in Japanese society are found in how beauty is perceived as social demand and necessity. This study attempts to reveal how the perception of women’s body and beauty in Breasts and Eggs is heavily influenced by the patriarchal and capitalistic ideals. We argue that capitalistic ideas shape the objectification of women’s bodies by using Naomi Wolf’s concept on the Beauty Myth and Alison Jaggar’s theory of capitalist feminism. It finds the female characters embody capitalist beauty standards set by the society through cosmetic surgery, media influences and societal judgment. The female character’s insecurity due to the capitalistic standards of beauty encourage her to follow beauty procedures such as breast augmentation. It reflects that beauty is transformed into commercialism and commodity. These beauty myths and beliefs lead into the psychological effects as shown further by the character’s thoughts on puberty that is tied to social expectation.

Abstract

This article aims at examining the Panopticism within the novella Animal Farm during Napoleon’s leadership. This is done by applying the theory of Panopticism developed by Foucault as derived from Bentham's Panopticon model. This research utilizes the qualitative method and uses George Orwell’s novella Animal Farm (1945) as the data source. Foucault's panoptic schema is characterized by the impression of continuous observation internalized into self-surveillance. The findings suggest that the Animal Farm is considered a panoptic society, with the pigs corresponding to the tower inspectors and the farm animals as the prisoners. The panoptic surveillance comes in various forms and primarily through discourse, to influence the animals to conform to the norm of staying docile and accepting Napoleon’s leadership. The Panopticism in Animal Farm shows how discourse can be a powerful device of social control as a surveillance method, especially when it incites fear and the desire for security.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the involvement of AI, particularly ChatGPT, in the creation of literary works, as well as its implications for the concepts of authorship, originality, the creative process, and the future of literature with technology. This study uses Barthesian Authorship concept and Floridi’s Ethics of Technology. The method used is a mixed method with a parallel convergent design approach. Data collection techniques include a survey of 50 students who have written literary works as part of their coursework and semi-structured interviews with three literature professors from different epistemological backgrounds. Quantitative analysis uses descriptive statistics, while qualitative data is analysed thematically. The results of the study show that all student respondents have used AI to write literary works, and the majority claim these works as their own without mentioning AI’s involvement in the process, reflecting an ethical crisis and creative subjectivity. The results of the interviews revealed that the concept of authorship has shifted from a single authority to a collaborative and negotiated relationship between humans and machines; originality is no longer considered an absolute value but rather a constantly evolving construction; the creative process must maintain its existential value; and literary ethics must be re-evaluated in the context of the current digital and academic landscape. This is literature in the post-humanist era, where AI is not merely a technological tool but a cultural agent involved in reshaping the contemporary literary landscape.

Abstract

The core vocabulary of the Oenames and Kaesmetan subdialects of the Dawan language spoken in East Amfoang, Timor Island, was compared and contrasted in this study. Six native speakers were observed and interviewed using a descriptive qualitative method, using Morris Swadesh's 200-word list of basic vocabulary as a reference. Key word classes, including verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, numerals, adverbs, and function words, were the focus of the analysis. The results demonstrated that both subdialects share a sizable number of lexical items, and the differences between them were also found. The Kaesmetan subdialect prefers open syllables, vowel retention, and syllabic expansion, whereas the Oenames subdialect tends to maintain compact forms with closed syllables and consonant clusters. This study confirmed that Oenames and Kaesmetan are closely related subdialects, enriching the internal diversity of the Dawan Language.

Abstract

Lexical transformation in translation is a process aimed at achieving semantic equivalence from the source language to the target language. This study seeks to identify the types of lexical transformations applied in the translation of Javanese cultural terms and to examine their implications for Javanese cultural identity. The data sources for this study are the novel Anak Bajang Menggiring Angin and its English translation Herding the Wind. A qualitative descriptive method is employed to thoroughly investigate the translation issues. The findings indicate that four types of lexical transformations are used in translating Javanese cultural terms, namely: (1) substitution, (2) addition, (3) omission, and (4) zero transformation. The implications of these transformations for Javanese cultural identity can be categorized into two main tendencies. Most Javanese cultural terms translated into the target language undergo cultural meaning distortion. However, some terms are deliberately retained by the translator as part of an effort to preserve and represent the source culture.
