Abstract

This study aims to analyze verbal and non-verbal signs in the short film Leaving Home using semiotic theories by Saussure (1983) and Barthes (1967). A qualitative descriptive method was applied through observation and note-taking to identify and interpret the signs within the short film. The analysis revealed 20 verbal signs and 20 non-verbal signs, classified into seven denotative meanings and thirty-three connotative meanings. The findings indicate that connotative signs are more dominant, highlighting the reliance on implicit representations of the concept of “home.” Verbal and non-verbal elements work together to portray themes of nostalgia, emotional struggle, and identity. This semiotic analysis is an effective approach to uncover layered meanings in short films. The significance of this study lies in its focus on short films a medium less examined in semiotic research while its novelty is shown through exploring how minimal dialogue and visual storytelling construct deep emotional meaning.

Abstract

Research on the relationship between the prohibition on fishing in the Sang Hyang Tapak Inscription (952 Ś/ 1030 AD) with the religion of the Sunda Kingdom community is necessary to trace the reasons for determining fish as something important. This study raises two main problems: why did King Śrī Jayabhūpati order the prohibition of fishing and how its relationship to the sacred area mentioned in the inscription? This study was designed with the qualitative method, consisting of description, comparative analysis, critics and also interpretation. Based on the research that has been conducted, the prohibition on fishing in the Sang Hyang Tapak Inscription is related to the religio-political context of the reign of King Śrī Jayabhūpati who placed fish as the embodiment of God Vishnu. Through this fishing ban policy, Śrī Jayabhūpati tried to build good relations with religious groups while building a good image in accordance with religious texts.

Abstract

In the current era of progress, women continue to face discrimination, marginalization, and inequality in both domestic and public spheres. This research explores the forms and strategies of female existence in the short story Candid by Tenni Purwanti. Using Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist theory and a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes data from the short story Candid in the collection Sambal dan Ranjang. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques. The findings highlight three key concepts representing women: fate and history, myth, and contemporary female life. Women assert their existence by working, engaging intellectually, transforming socially, and rejecting dependence on men. Female characters such as Alisia, her mother, and her sister demonstrate that women are capable of living independently and enacting social change through resistance to patriarchal domination. This study affirms the continuing struggle of women to define their identity and autonomy within a patriarchal society.

Abstract

This study analyzes The Righteous Sinner by Royyan Julian using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism theory of literary sociology to explore the moral contradictions of its characters. Through qualitative analysis of excerpts, the research identifies contradictions in characters' actions and dialogues. The results of this study indicate an anomaly in moral and ethical values as portrayed through the characters. The moral complexity in the characters' actions, which contrasts with the societal image attached to them, indicates an attempt to explore the human dimension and previously unexplored boundaries. This research is beneficial in providing a deeper understanding of how literary works can represent social realities and the struggle of moral values within society, as well as serving as a reference for literary studies that focus on the relationship between the structure of a work and the structure of society.

Abstract

Language is not merely a communication tool but also a medium capable of revealing criminal acts through hidden messages and identity markers. This study examines how linguistic and cultural factors influence criminal behavior using semantic approach for language evidence analysis. Data were taken from a 2019 premeditated murder (mutilation) case documented by the X (Twitter) account @siskanoviw on November 9, 2024. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the analysis focused on linguistic features found in the written messages left at the crime scene and on cultural aspects related to the defendant’s social background. The findings indicate two key markers: macro-linguistics cues reflected in lexical choices and writing style, and locational markers referencing living conditions and potential alibi construction. This study contributes to forensic linguistics by demonstrating how linguistic and cultural indicators strengthen identity profiling, intention interpretation, and the analysis of evidentiary language in criminal investigations.

Abstract

This article examines Shiva-Buddha as a strategy for religious transformation rather than syncretism or fusion by linking material evidence (architecture, iconography, sacred spatial arrangements) with textual evidence (inscriptions and kakawin). The database includes traces from East Java and Ancient Bali, such as the Kelurak Inscription (782 AD), the Gajah Mada Inscription (1291 AD), the Kakawin Nāgarakṛtāgama, and a corpus of Balinese inscriptions mentioning śaiwasogata, balanced by readings of the sites of Singasari, Jawi, Kidal, Jago, Jabung, Surawana, Gunung Kawi, Goa Gajah, and the Tirta Empul and Pegulingan complexes. The methodology combines epigraphic criticism, architectural-iconographic typological analysis, and textual hermeneutics. The main findings are (1) a consistent two-layer pattern, transformation bound within the material realm (Shiva and Buddha are present, but still follow their respective rules) and free transformation in the realm of devotion, which brings them together without forming a new religion; (2) a politico-ritual function as a technology of legitimation as well as a mechanism of social integration; (3) two main drivers, local innovative power and the tantrayana medium that provides cross-traditional cosmology, icons, and rituals.
