Abstract

Oral health is an essential component of overall health and significantly affects quality of life. One of the most common oral health problems is dental caries, which is the destruction of tooth tissue caused by enamel demineralization triggered by acid produced from carbohydrate metabolism by plaque bacteria, particularly Streptococcus mutans. Guava leaves (Psidium guajava L.) are known to contain active compounds with antibacterial properties. Research has shown that these active compounds can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans and disrupt dental biofilm formation, making them a potential preventive agent against caries. Articles were collected from PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect using Boolean search techniques. Of the 538 articles identified, 10 were selected based on inclusion criteria and topic relevance. The review results show that guava leaf extract can reduce Streptococcus mutans colony counts both in vitro and in vivo, demonstrating effectiveness comparable to 0.2% chlorhexidine without adverse side effects. Furthermore, combining guava leaf extract with other agents, such as nanosilver and guava bark extract, has been shown to enhance antibacterial activity through synergistic mechanisms. Therefore, it can be concluded that guava leaves have strong potential as a natural, effective, and safe alternative for the prevention of dental caries.

Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a microorganism often found on almost all skin surfaces. Uncontrolled growth of S. epidermidis can cause skin dysbiosis such as acne. Generally, doxycycline, clindamycin, and tetracycline are used as synthetic antibiotic agents for S. epidermidis, but the search for new natural antibiotic agents to treat acne due to S. epidermidis needs to be developed, such as green spinach leaf extract (Amaranthus hybridus L.). Green Spinach is known to have antioxidant, antianemia, anti-inflammatory, antihyperlipidemic, antidiuretic, antifungal and antimicrobial activities, duet to the presence of secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, steroids, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids. This study aims to analyse the antibacterial activity of green spinach leaf ethanol extract by considering the extract's inhibition zone. Green spinach leaves were extracted by Ultra Assisted Extraction (UAE) with 96% ethanol, and testing was carried out using the disc diffusion method. The results of this study showed that spinach leaf extract with concentrations of 15%, 30%, and 45% gave sequential results of 11.3 ± 0.06 mm, 12.2 ± 0.1 mm, and 12.5 ± 0.1 mm, including the category of strong inhibitory response.

Abstract

Fibrosis is a progressive pathological process characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix and represents a major cause of organ failure, including in the kidney, liver, and lung. Currently available antifibrotic therapies have limited efficacy and are associated with potential adverse effects, highlighting the urgent need for new drug candidates derived from natural sources. The seagrass Enhalus acoroides, which is abundant in Indonesian waters, has been reported to contain flavonoids, polyphenols, sterols, and bioactive fatty acids that may modulate oxidative stress and inflammation, two key mechanisms involved in fibrogenesis. This review aims to evaluate the biochemical and pharmacological potential of E. acoroides as a source of antifibrotic compounds for national drug development. The methodology involved a literature review of scientific databases focusing on phytochemical profiles, pharmacological activities, and molecular mechanisms related to fibrosis. The findings indicate that E. acoroides exhibits significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities, contains major secondary metabolites (notably flavonoids and phenolics), and shows mechanistic relevance to the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway, a central regulator of fibrogenesis. In conclusion, E. acoroides has promising potential as a candidate antifibrotic phytopharmaceutical; however, further validation through in vitro, in vivo, and advanced pharmaceutical formulation studies is required

Abstract

Skin damage can be triggered by exposure to free radicals, making antioxidants important as skin protection agents. Arabica coffee leaves (Coffea arabica L.) and perepat leaves (Sonneratia alba Sm.) are known to have potential as natural sources of antioxidants. This study aims to formulate and evaluate lotion preparations containing ethanol extracts of these two leaves based on their physical characteristics and antioxidant activity. Four lotion formulas were prepared, namely K (without extract addition), FI (0.1% Arabica leaves + 1.0% perepat leaves), FII (0.5% Arabica leaves+ 0.5% perepat leaves), and FIII (1.0% Arabiva leaves + 0.1% Perepat leaves). The evaluation was conducted using an accelerated test (cycle test) on organoleptic properties, homogeneity, stability, pH, spreadability, adhesion, viscosity, emulsion type, and antioxidant activity, which were then analyzed descriptively. The results showed that formulas FII and FIII met the physical stability requirements. The antioxidant activity test showed that formula FIII had the highest activity with an IC₅₀ value of 45.41 ± 0.52 ppm compared to FI and FII. Based on these results, it can be concluded that lotion formula FIII is the best formulation in terms of stability and antioxidant effectiveness.
