Abstract

Abstract

The widespread phenomenon of environmental degradation has become a serious threat to the sustainability of human life and nature, as it affects not only ecological aspects but also social and economic dimensions. It is evident that discrimination against the role of women, particularly in environmental conservation, still persists. This article seeks to integrate Vandana Shiva’s ecofeminist perspective with ecotheology in the interpretation of the Qur’an, as reflected in Qur’anic verses related to ecology, such as QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 30, QS. Ar-Rum [30]: 41, and QS. Ar-Rahman [55]: 7–9, as well as verses emphasizing gender equality, such as QS. An-Nisa [4]: 32 and QS. An-Nahl [16]: 97. This research is a library-based study employing a qualitative approach and descriptive-analytical methods. The findings indicate that the integration of Vandana Shiva’s ecofeminist concept with ecotheological interpretations of the Qur’an gives rise to the concept of *Qur’anic Ecofeminism*, which can serve as a foundation for ecological practices that incorporate social values toward humanistic ecological development. Therefore, the role of women in environmental conservation holds a strategic position in achieving ecological sustainability.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between postmodernism, religious plurality, and modern Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia through a tafsir study of QS. al-Kāfirūn. Indonesia’s socio-religious context is characterized by high religious diversity, which frequently raises tensions related to claims of religious truth and tolerance. This condition requires an interpretative framework that is capable of responding to plurality without dissolving normative religious boundaries. The purpose of this study is to analyze how modern Indonesian Qur’anic interpretations of QS. al-Kāfirūn construct the concept of religious tolerance within a pluralistic society, and how postmodern perspectives contribute to understanding interpretive diversity. This research employs a qualitative library-based method using a thematic and contextual tafsir approach, analyzing classical and modern Indonesian interpretations of QS. al-Kāfirūn. The findings indicate that modern tafsir in Indonesia generally emphasizes tolerance as a form of peaceful coexistence rather than theological relativism, while postmodernism functions as an analytical lens to critique singular truth claims in interpretation. This study contributes to contemporary Qur’anic studies by clarifying the limits and possibilities of tolerance in Islamic interpretation within a plural religious context. In conclusion, QS. al-Kāfirūn supports interreligious tolerance without negating Islamic doctrinal principles.

Abstract

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the tradition of reciting al-Fātiḥah before drinking coffee in Martapura’s majelis taklim as a contemporary expression of the Living Qur’an within Banjar culture. The practice reflects a fusion of sacred text, Hadhrami Sufi devotional ethos, and local hospitality culture through a ritual performance inherited from earlier scholars. Using a qualitative–ethnographic approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with five informants (scholars, organizers, and participants), and textual analysis of Tadzkir al-Nās, and recent Living Qur’an scholarship. The findings show that the ritual takes place when coffee is served during the gathering, accompanied by the recitation of the tawassul, followed by a collective recitation of al-Fātiḥah, even before all participants receive their cups. Genealogically, the practice is rooted in the teachings of Habib Ahmad bin Hasan al-Aṭṭās, who emphasized the blessings and protection associated with al-Fātiḥah, transmitted to Banjar scholars through Hadhrami networks. Spiritually, participants experience tranquility, strengthened intention, and a sense of connection with the masyaikh. Socially, the ritual reinforces solidarity, strengthens communal identity, and creates a distinctive space of religious interaction. The study concludes that this tradition represents a living and performative mode of Qur’anic reception that integrates textual, Sufi, and local cultural dimensions into a unified religious expression serving both spiritual and social functions within Banjar Muslim society.
