Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease that not only imposes a significant physical health burden but also has profound psychological implications. Among the most commonly observed psychological responses in TB patients is anxiety, which can adversely affect their adherence to treatment regimens and hinder the overall recovery process. Anxiety may arise due to various factors such as prolonged illness, social stigma, isolation, fear of transmission, and uncertainty about treatment outcomes. This descriptive quantitative study aimed to assess the levels of anxiety experienced by pulmonary TB patients undergoing treatment at Dr. Slamet Hospital in Garut, Indonesia. A total of 77 participants who were actively receiving anti-tuberculosis therapy were recruited for the study. Data collection was conducted using the Indonesian version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-42), a standardized instrument for measuring psychological distress. The findings revealed that a majority of the respondents experienced moderate levels of anxiety (37.7%). This was followed by severe anxiety in 23.4% of the patients, mild anxiety in 19.5%, extremely severe anxiety in 11.7%, and normal levels in only 7.7% of the participants. These results indicate that a considerable proportion of pulmonary TB patients are struggling with anxiety symptoms during their course of treatment. The study underscores the importance of integrating psychological support services into TB treatment programs. Addressing anxiety through counseling, mental health screening, and psychosocial interventions may enhance patients' emotional well-being, improve treatment adherence, and lead to more favorable clinical outcomes. Health professionals and policymakers are encouraged to recognize and respond to the mental health needs of TB patients to ensure a more holistic and effective care approach.

Abstract

Breast milk is the most complete form of nutrition for infants, capable of fulfilling all their needs across physical, psychological, social, and even spiritual dimensions. It contains essential nutrients, antibodies, and bioactive components that support optimal growth and development while fostering emotional bonding between mother and child. A mother’s level of knowledge plays a pivotal role in shaping her motivation and commitment to breastfeeding, as informed mothers are more likely to initiate and maintain exclusive breastfeeding practices. This study aims to examine the relationship between maternal knowledge and breastfeeding behavior at Mother and Child Hospital (RSIA) Ananda Makassar in 2022. Employing a quantitative research approach with an analytical observational design, the study utilized a cross-sectional method to capture data at a single point in time. Research was conducted from December 2022 to January 2023, targeting a population of 329 mothers who delivered at RSIA Ananda Makassar between May and December 2022. Using purposive sampling based on specific inclusion criteria, a total of 112 respondents were selected for participation. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test to assess the association between the independent variable (maternal knowledge) and the dependent variable (breastfeeding behavior). A significance level of 5% (α = 0.05) was applied to determine statistical relevance. The results revealed a significant relationship between mothers’ knowledge levels and breastfeeding behavior (p = 0.003), indicating that higher knowledge levels were associated with better breastfeeding practices. These findings highlight the importance of health education interventions aimed at increasing maternal knowledge on breastfeeding. Strengthening awareness programs, providing counseling during antenatal and postnatal care, and involving family support systems could enhance breastfeeding behaviors. Ultimately, improving maternal knowledge serves as a key strategy to promote exclusive breastfeeding, which in turn contributes to improved infant health outcomes and the overall well-being of both mother and child.

Abstract

Preconception care is a crucial component of reproductive health services aimed at preparing couples, especially prospective brides and grooms, for a healthy pregnancy and responsible parenting. This qualitative study used a phenomenological design to explore the implementation of preconception care for parenthood preparation among engaged couples at Tanjung Tiram Public Health Center. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 13 participants, including 3 couples and 7 individual women. Thematic analysis revealed several key themes: initial knowledge, perceived benefits, sources of information, access readiness, the role of healthcare workers, barriers and support, and expectations. The findings show that most participants understood preconception care as physical check-ups but lacked awareness of its importance in educating for psychosocial readiness and childrearing. Although healthcare workers provided basic services and some counseling, the educational aspect on parenting and emotional preparation was insufficient. This study highlights the need for comprehensive preconception education that includes mental, social, and parenting preparation. It implies that preconception services should go beyond screening to include structured and culturally relevant health promotion, especially in rural areas like Tanjung Tiram.

Abstract

Bioactive compounds are chemical compounds formed through metabolic processes in plants, contributing to their beneficial properties. Cocoa fruit, derived from 22 cultivated Theobroma species, contains a variety of bioactive compounds that offer several health benefits. Identifying these bioactive compounds in plants can be achieved through extraction using various solvents, depending on their polarity properties. This study aims to explore the content of bioactive compounds in dried cocoa fruit peel (Theobroma cacao L.) extract, focusing on variations in solvent polarity. The results of the study showed that the 96% ethanol extract (polar solvent) of cocoa fruit peel contained a range of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins. Ethanol, being a polar solvent, effectively extracted a variety of bioactive compounds due to its ability to dissolve polar substances. This extract is significant due to its wide range of potential health benefits attributed to the presence of flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins, all known for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, the acetone extract (semi-polar solvent) of cocoa fruit peel also contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. Acetone, as a semi-polar solvent, was able to extract a variety of compounds with moderate polarity, making it a versatile solvent for bioactive compound extraction. The presence of alkaloids and saponins in this extract indicates its potential use for various medicinal purposes. On the other hand, the n-Hexane extract (non-polar solvent) of cocoa fruit peel produced primarily alkaloids and terpenoids. Hexane, being non-polar, tends to extract non-polar compounds, which include alkaloids and terpenoids known for their various biological activities. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the varying effectiveness of solvents with different polarities in extracting bioactive compounds from cocoa fruit peel, which can be utilized for health-promoting purposes.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, or a combination of both. This condition requires long-term treatment and has the potential to lead to serious complications if not properly managed. The search for alternative herbal-based treatments has become a major focus of various pharmacological studies. One such plant with potential is the takokak fruit (Solanum torvum Swartz), which has traditionally been used to treat various health conditions such as hypertension, microbial infections, and reproductive system disorders, as well as possessing antipyretic and antidiabetic properties. This study aimed to evaluate the antihyperglycemic efficacy of the takokak fruit ethanol extract in glucose-induced male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The extract was obtained through a maceration method using 96% ethanol as a solvent. Five test groups were prepared, each consisting of three rats: a negative control group (Na-CMC), a positive control group (metformin), and three treatment groups with takokak extract concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20%. Glucose induction was administered orally, and after 30 minutes, the extract was administered to the treatment group, and blood glucose levels were measured for two hours. The results showed that the takokak fruit extract was able to reduce blood sugar levels by 27% in the 5% group, 25% in the 10% group, and 33% in the 20% group, respectively. However, the ANOVA statistical test yielded a significance value of 0.48, indicating that the difference in blood glucose reduction between the groups was not statistically significant. Although not yet significant, these results indicate that the ethanol extract of takokak fruit has potential as an antihyperglycemic agent, which requires further research on a larger scale and duration to obtain more conclusive results.

Abstract

Anemia is when a person has fewer red blood cells or lower levels of hemoglobin in their blood than what is normal for their age and gender. In healthy people, red blood cells carry hemoglobin, which helps move oxygen and other nutrients like vitamins and minerals to the brain and body. Normally, males have a hemoglobin level of 13. 5 grams per deciliter, and females have 12 grams per deciliter. This community service was done at SMPN 05 Sungai Kakap and aimed to teach students about the importance of checking hemoglobin levels. The activity used educational talks and hemoglobin testing with a digital device called Easy Touch GCHb.The counseling sessions showed that the students were interested and asked many questions. The hemoglobin test found that out of 24 students tested, 4 girls had levels below 12 g/dl, which means they had anemia. The method used—talks and testing—worked well. The results were then compared with body mass index (BMI), but there was no link between the two. More checks and ongoing care are needed to stop anemia from happening early.

Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of adolescents' daily lives and plays a crucial role in shaping their lifestyles, including health-related behaviors. This study aims to analyze the role of social media in encouraging changes in clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS) among urban adolescents in South Minahasa Regency. A quantitative approach with a descriptive design was employed, and data were collected using questionnaires distributed to 100 adolescents residing in the Amurang and Tumpaan areas. The collected data were analyzed descriptively to identify the patterns of information access, the types of platforms used, and the impact of health-related content on adolescents’ behavior. The findings indicate that 78% of respondents admitted to obtaining information about PHBS from social media platforms, with TikTok and Instagram being the most influential. Furthermore, 65% of respondents reported experiencing positive changes in personal hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing and maintaining oral health, as well as improvements in environmental hygiene, including waste management and household cleanliness. Social media health content that is visually engaging, short in duration, and easy to understand was perceived as more effective in influencing adolescents’ daily practices. In addition, peer interaction within social media platforms was found to strengthen motivation and foster a sense of collective responsibility in adopting healthier behaviors. This study highlights that social media serves not only as a source of information but also as a medium of behavioral reinforcement among adolescents. However, the effectiveness of these platforms largely depends on the quality, relevance, and cultural suitability of the health messages delivered. Therefore, the conclusion of this study emphasizes the need for a more structured, engaging, and locally-based digital communication strategy to maximize the impact of social media as a health promotion tool.
