Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of dietary black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) larvae meal supplementation on feed palatability and mortality of female Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) during the grower-to-layer transition. The experiment used a completely randomized design with four treatments: P0 (basal diet without BSF meal), P1 (basal diet + 8% BSF meal), P2 (basal diet + 16% BSF meal), and P3 (basal diet + 24% BSF meal), each replicated five times with six birds per replicate (n = 120). Palatability was measured as feed consumed during the first hour after feeding, recorded separately for grower (21–42 days) and layer (43–63 days) phases. Mortality was calculated as the percentage of dead birds relative to the initial number per experimental unit throughout the study. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by least significant difference (LSD) tests. BSF meal supplementation significantly reduced palatability during the grower phase (P < 0.01), decreasing from 4.06 g in P0 to 3.10 g, 2.98 g, and 3.01 g in P1, P2, and P3, respectively, with no significant differences among the BSF-supplemented groups. In the layer phase, palatability was unaffected (P > 0.05), ranging from 7.63 to 7.78 g. Mortality remained low (0–3.33%) and did not differ significantly among treatments in either phase (P > 0.05). These findings indicate that BSF meal can be included up to 24% in quail diets without increasing mortality, but high inclusion may temporarily depress early feed acceptance during the grower phase. Gradual adaptation and lower initial inclusion are recommended to optimize feed palatability.

Abstract

This study evaluated whether the lactation period affects litter size and kid birth weight of Sapera goats under a semi-intensive farm system in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Eighteen Sapera does were grouped according to lactation period: first (P1), second (P2), and third lactation (P3), with six does per group. Primary data were obtained from kidding observations, litter-size records, and kid birth weights measured within 24 h after birth; secondary data on lactation period were collected from farm records. The study used a survey approach with purposive sampling, and data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance for a completely randomized design. Mean litter size increased numerically from 1.33 kids/doe in P1 to 1.66 in P2 and 1.83 in P3, while birth weight increased from 3.17 kg to 3.40 and 3.44 kg, respectively. However, the lactation period did not significantly affect either trait (P > 0.05). These findings indicate that the lactation period alone is insufficient as a selection criterion; complete recording of parity, body weight, nutrition, and kidding type is recommended

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of the dose of carambola (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) leaf extract and of subsequent storage duration on the egg white index (EWI), egg yolk index (EYI), and Haugh unit (HU) of duck eggs. A completely randomised design in a 4 × 3 factorial arrangement was used, with extract dose as Factor A P0 (no soaking, control), P1 (5%), P2 (10%), and P3 (15%) and storage duration as Factor B 20, 30, and 40 days each of the 12 combinations replicated three times using 72 duck eggs in total. Eggs were soaked for 48 h, drained, and stored at room temperature; EWI and EYI were measured on a flat glass plate, HU was computed from albumen height and egg weight, and data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by least significant difference tests. Neither extract dose nor storage duration significantly affected EWI, EYI, or HU (P > 0.05), and no interaction was detected. Mean values nevertheless rose consistently with increasing dose and declined with longer storage: across doses EWI rose from 0.019 to 0.024, EYI from 0.267 to 0.364, and HU from 37.7 to 45.3, whereas extending storage from 20 to 40 days lowered EWI from 0.027 to 0.016, EYI from 0.373 to 0.245, and HU from 45.5 to 36.6. All values fell below the SNI 01-3926:2008 fresh-egg thresholds. Under the conditions tested the carambola leaf extract did not maintain duck-egg quality; alternative preservation materials are therefore recommended.

Abstract

This review synthesizes evidence on the factors that govern the quality of sheep meat (Ovis aries), a commodity of growing economic and nutritional importance in Indonesia and worldwide. A systematic search of Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and the Garuda/SINTA index, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, retrieved peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2025 that reported physicochemical, nutritional, or sensory attributes of sheep meat; 35 studies met the eligibility criteria and were synthesized narratively. The reviewed evidence indicates that meat quality is multidimensional and is shaped by intrinsic factors (breed/genotype, age and slaughter weight, sex) and extrinsic factors (feeding system and diet, pre-slaughter handling, and post-mortem processing). Forage- and pasture-based systems consistently raised n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid, improving the nutritional profile, whereas concentrate finishing increased intramuscular fat and n-6 fatty acids. Slaughter age and weight were the dominant determinants of tenderness, intramuscular fat, and flavor intensity, while post-mortem aging reduced Warner-Bratzler shear force and improved water-holding capacity. Reported Indonesian local-sheep values (Domba Ekor Tipis and Domba Garut) clustered at pH 5.79-6.03, cooking loss 24-25%, and shear force 1.9-2.7 kg cm-2, comparable with international light-lamb data. The principal research gaps are the scarcity of standardized, fatty-acid-resolved studies on Indonesian indigenous breeds and the limited use of objective sensory protocols. Strategic manipulation of breed, slaughter age, diet, and aging is recommended to optimize both the eating and nutritional quality of sheep meat.
