Abstract

Objective: This study explores the implementation of culturally-based Islamic Religious Education (IRE) as a transformative effort to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting inclusive, equitable, quality education and fostering peaceful, just, and inclusive societies. The main objective is to examine how cultural integration is applied within IRE practices in schools, how it is perceived by various stakeholders, and its impact on students’ religious understanding, tolerance, and identity formation. Theoretical framework: Drawing upon a theoretical framework rooted in multicultural education and identity theory, the research highlights the significance of integrating local cultural values into religious education to prevent radicalization and foster a more inclusive worldview among students. Literature review: The literature review involves a critical analysis of academic works that address controversies, pedagogical shifts, and trends in culturally-based IRE. Methods: The method employed is a qualitative literature study that synthesizes findings from scholarly publications focused on cultural adaptation in Islamic education. Results: Results reveal three key findings: (1) persistent debates among scholars and educators regarding the inclusion of cultural elements in religious teaching, ranging from enthusiastic support to strong rejection; (2) a notable shift in IRE delivery methods from traditional classroom instruction to digital and technology-based formats, aligning with global educational trends; and (3) the potential of culturally-based IRE to serve as an effective countermeasure to religious radicalism and identity fragmentation among students in the modern era. Implications: The implications of this research extend to both theoretical enrichment and practical implementation. It offers a conceptual contribution to understanding the dynamics of cultural integration in religious education, while also providing actionable insights for teachers, schools, and policymakers to develop pedagogical strategies that are inclusive, adaptive, and socially responsive. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its emphasis on cultural integration as a strategic and sustainable model for Islamic education reform that aligns with the broader vision of the SDGs. By contextualizing religious values through cultural frameworks, this approach reinforces peaceful coexistence, identity stability, and educational inclusivity.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines the legal consequences of State Administrative Decisions that violate the General Principles of Good Governance (Asas-Asas Umum Pemerintahan yang Baik/AUPB) as regulated in Law Number 30 of 2014 on State Administration, analyzed through the perspectives of Islamic law, positive law, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework is grounded in the rule of law and good governance theory, emphasizing legality, accountability, and justice in public administration. This framework is complemented by Islamic legal principles such as amanah (trust), ‘adl (justice), and responsibility of rulers, which reinforce ethical governance. From an SDGs perspective, the study aligns particularly with SDG 16, which promotes effective, accountable, and transparent institutions. Literature review: The literature review covers doctrines of administrative law, principles of good governance, Law Number 30 of 2014, and classical as well as contemporary Islamic legal thought concerning justice, leadership ethics, and accountability. Methods: This research employs a normative juridical method through library-based legal research. Data sources include primary legal materials such as statutes and state administrative decisions, secondary materials including scholarly books and journal articles, and tertiary materials such as legal dictionaries and encyclopedias. Qualitative legal analysis is used to interpret norms and evaluate their coherence. Results: The findings indicate that State Administrative Decisions involving dishonesty, abuse of authority, conflicts of interest, or regulatory violations constitute maladministration and weaken democratic governance. From an Islamic law perspective, such decisions violate core ethical principles, while from a positive law perspective, they trigger legal responsibility and administrative sanctions. Implications: The implications emphasize the urgency of strengthening AUPB enforcement, harmonizing Islamic legal values with democratic governance, and enhancing oversight mechanisms to prevent KKN practices. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its integrative analysis that bridges state administrative law, Islamic legal ethics, democratic theory, and SDGs-oriented governance.

Abstract

Objective: This research aims to explain the urgency, reconceptualization, strategies, and implications of AIK transformation that support sustainable development. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research is based on Paulo Freire's Critical Pedagogy and Amin Abdullah's Integration-Interconnection paradigm. Literature review: AIK faces stagnation because it is still normative and less responsive to contemporary realities. Previous research has shown the potential for integration of Islamic values (tauḥīd, ʿubūdiyyah, itqān, iḥsān, imtiyāz, and khidmat) with SDGs indicators (SDG 1, SDG 4, SDG 10, SDG 13, SDG 16), and emphasizes the urgency of sustainability-based curriculum reform. Methods: This research method uses a qualitative approach based on a literature study, analyzing the content of the literature, identifying key themes that link Islamic values and SDGs indicators, and reconstructing the AIK paradigm from a sustainability perspective. Results: The results show that the AIK curriculum can be transformed into a contextual and transformative education model through the integration of Islamic values such as tauḥīd, ‘ubūdiyyah, itqān, iḥsān, imtiyāz, and perkhidmatan (service into the SDGs) indicators, including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 16 (Peace and Justice). Its implementation includes curriculum renewal, cross-disciplinary collaboration, participatory learning, student research and social action, as well as critical pedagogy-based faculty training. Implications: The implications of AIK extend to the philosophical, curricular, cultural, and structural realms in Islamic higher education. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in the integration of progressive Islamic values with SDG principles within a conceptual framework that has not been extensively explored, as well as the development of an AIK curriculum model that is responsive to global challenges in spiritual, social, and ecological aspects.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the poetry of Indunisiya al-Badiʿah by KH. Abdullah bin Nuh uses heuristic, hermeneutics, and ecocriticism approaches to uncover the synthesis of Islamic spiritual values, nationalism, and ecological awareness, and examine their relevance to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4, SDG 13, and SDG 15. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research refers to ecocritical theories (Glotfelty, Buell, Garrard), which study the relationship between literature and the environment; Islamic spirituality theories (Nasr, Izutsu), which view nature as God's āyāt; and the SDGs framework, which guides the integration of sustainability values into literary works. Literature review: Literature review shows that Indonesian literature, such as the works of WS Rendra, Taufiq Ismail, and Emha Ainun Nadjib, has raised a lot of environmental issues. However, ecocriticism research on Arabic-Indonesian literature written by Islamic boarding school figures, especially KH. Abdullah bin Nuh is still very limited. The relevant literature affirms the role of literature as a means of ecological literacy, education for sustainable development, and preservation of cultural heritage, in line with SDG 4.7, SDG 13, SDG 15, and SDG 11. Methods: Interpretive qualitative approach through heuristic, hermeneutical, and ecocritical-contextual reading; primary data in the form of poetry texts, secondary data from theoretical literature; validation through theoretical and contextual triangulation. Results: The results of the study show that this poem utilizes the natural symbols of the archipelago, such as mountains, valleys, dhuha light, local flowers, animals, and water as a medium for ecospiritual da'wah and prophetic nationalism. Nature is positioned as a spiritual space that must be protected, with a message that is in line with SDG 4, SDG 13, and SDG 15. Implications: Showing the role of Arabic-Indonesian literature as an ecological education instrument based on religious values, supporting cultural strategies for the SDGs, and the preservation of intangible culture. Novelty: The first ecocritical analysis of the classic Arab-Indonesian works of Islamic boarding school scholars that integrate ecospirituality, nationalism, and global sustainability.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine how the principles of tax justice in Islamic Law can be integrated into modern tax policies to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: This study is based on the theory of justice in Islamic Law, which includes the concepts of distributive justice, benefit, and transparency, which in the context of Islamic history are realized through instruments such as zakat, kharaj, jizyah, and usyur. These principles are compared with modern taxation theory, which emphasizes the principles of justice, efficiency, and equity. Literature review: The literature review includes classical and contemporary fiqh literature related to fiscal obligations, tax laws and regulations in Indonesia, the Zakat Management Law, and official documents of the 2030 SDGs, which place economic justice as a main pillar of sustainable development. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach with a juridical normative method through library research. Data were collected from Islamic legal sources, tax regulations, SDGs documents, and previous research results, then analyzed using content analysis to identify the relevance and potential for integrating the principles of Islamic tax justice with modern fiscal policies. Results: The results of the study indicate that the principle of tax justice in Islamic Law is oriented towards proportionality of burden based on taxpayers' ability, public welfare, and transparency of management. Integration of this principle with modern tax policy can strengthen the function of income redistribution, increase tax compliance, and support the achievement of SDG 1 (poverty alleviation), SDG 8 (inclusive economic growth), and SDG 10 (reduced inequality). Implication: These findings provide policy recommendations for the government to harmonize tax and zakat regulations, improve public fiscal literacy, and optimize the digitalization of tax and zakat payment systems to align with SDG targets. Novelty: This study offers a Hybrid Fiscal Model integration model that combines modern taxes and Islamic fiscal instruments proportionally and based on public welfare, thus creating a tax system that is not only based on Sharia values, but also relevant to the global development agenda.

Abstract

Objective: This study analyzes the contribution of Muslim women-led agriculture in Bondowoso Regency to the reduction of household carbon emissions as well as the strengthening of ecological and economic resilience based on tengka values, supporting local SDGs targets. This study also formulates a synergy model for households, Islamic boarding schools, and village governments as a form of women's empowerment aligned with global SDGs objectives. Theoretical framework: This research is based on the integration of sustainable agriculture, women's empowerment, and Islamic ecology based on local wisdom. Tengka values serve as a framework for cultural empowerment that connects low-carbon practices with women's social agency. Literature review: Literature review shows that studies on low-carbon agriculture, women's leadership, and the role of local values are still rarely integrated simultaneously. This research fills this gap through an integrated cultural and institutional approach. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design in Karanganyar Village, East Java. Data was obtained through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Results: The results showed that the production of local bhug-bhug feed from kitchen waste resulted in lower carbon emissions than industrial feed. This practice is able to reduce feed costs by up to 80% and strengthen household economic resilience. Implications: These findings confirm that climate change mitigation can be achieved through gender-equitable and culturally sensitive household farming practices. The synergy model of households–pesantren–village governments has the potential to become a reference for low-carbon village policies. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in the formulation of a tengka-based women's empowerment model that integrates low-carbon agricultural practices and local institutional synergy. This study places local wisdom and religious institutions as the foundation of sustainable ecological transformation (sdgs).

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to develop a religious text translation model based on rechecking semantic-communicative analysis to improve translation quality. The model supports semantic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and moderation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: This research integrates semantic and communicative translation theory, cognitive-communicative approaches, functional translation principles, and hermeneutic interpretation. These frameworks collectively support a holistic and ethically grounded approach to religious translation. Literature review: Previous studies on religious translation focus mainly on isolated linguistic or cultural strategies, with limited integration of systematic rechecking and SDGs perspectives. This study addresses the gap by proposing an integrated semantic-communicative and contextual model. Methods: This study employs a qualitative approach using data from Islam: A Short History and focus group discussions with Qur’an translation teachers. Semantic-communicative analysis, rechecking procedures, and hermeneutic interpretation are applied to ensure accuracy and contextual relevance. Results: The findings indicate that religious text translation faces challenges related to semantic non-equivalence and cultural context. Integrating semantic-communicative analysis improves readability and meaning accuracy. Rechecking procedures effectively reduces the distortion of key religious terms. Implications: The study highlights the need for translator training that integrates linguistic and religious knowledge. It also supports the use of contextualized glossaries and cautious machine translation with rechecking mechanisms in line with the SDGs. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its holistic and replicable translation model integrating semantic-communicative analysis, expert-based rechecking, and hermeneutic interpretation. This approach advances translation studies by linking linguistic accuracy with ethical and sustainable knowledge transmission.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to compare Sunni and Shia interpretations of Qur'anic verses on inheritance, focusing on the concepts of ‘ashabah (Sunni) and qarābah (Shia). It explores how these interpretations influence inheritance rights and the order of heirs, and examines their alignment with modern concepts of justice and equality, particularly in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: The study analyzes Sunni and Shia jurisprudence on inheritance, connecting these interpretations with contemporary ideals of justice, equality, and the SDGs. Literature review: The review examines classical and modern perspectives on Qur'anic inheritance verses, highlighting gender and justice issues in Sunni and Shia law. Method: Using a qualitative approach, the study compares Sunni and Shia legal texts to explore their interpretations of inheritance laws and contemporary ethical concerns. Result: The study finds that Sunni inheritance law follows a patrilineal structure, prioritizing male heirs, while Shia law is more inclusive, valuing blood relations regardless of gender. This highlights different legal approaches to inheritance in both traditions. Implications: The findings suggest a need to reinterpret Islamic inheritance laws to better align with gender equality and modern justice principles, especially the SDGs. Novelty: This study offers a new comparative analysis of Sunni and Shia inheritance laws, linking them to contemporary issues like gender equality and justice.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to reconceptualize the Arabic language as the epistemological axis of Islamic education within the Muhammadiyah educational system, positioning it as a strategic medium for integrating revelation (wahy), reason (ʿaql), and spiritual intuition (dzauq) in response to contemporary educational challenges and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework is grounded in the triadic epistemology of bayani, burhani, and ‘irfani, as articulated by al-Jābirī and recontextualized in Islamic educational thought, wherein Arabic functions not merely as a linguistic tool but as a unifying epistemic structure. Literature review:  The literature review reveals that most existing studies approach Arabic instruction from pedagogical, grammatical, or communicative perspectives, while its epistemological role in shaping Islamic knowledge and ethical reasoning remains underexplored. Recent scholarly debates highlight the urgency of repositioning Arabic as a living epistemology capable of sustaining intellectual depth, and ethical responsibility. Methods: This research adopts a qualitative philosophical approach, drawing on Muhammadiyah institutional documents, curricular guidelines, and classical as well as contemporary Islamic scholarship. Data are analyzed through conceptual triangulation by integrating textual (bayani), rational (burhani), and intuitive (‘irfani) modes of reasoning. Results: The findings demonstrate that Arabic, when framed as an epistemic medium, enables integrative learning, bridges the dichotomy between religious and scientific knowledge, and cultivates ethical consciousness aligned with sustainable educational development. This epistemological integration supports Muhammadiyah’s vision of Islam berkemajuan by promoting inclusive, reflective, and values-based education. Implications: The implications of this study suggest that repositioning Arabic within Islamic education can contribute to sustainable knowledge formation, moral reasoning, and intercultural understanding, reinforcing the ethical foundations of the SDGs. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in introducing the concept of Arabic as an epistemological ecology, offering a transformative framework that advances Islamic educational renewal beyond linguistic and technical boundaries.
