Abstract

Palembang is a historic city in Indonesia. Palembang serves as a port and a trading hub in addition. The Hadrami, who hailed from Hadramaut, were one tribe of traders who subsequently made Palembang their home. The Hadrami immigrants reside in the two historic villages of Al Munawar and Assegaf. In this study, architectural components in these two villages are used as signs that can be interpreted based on their denotation and connotation. This research method is known as semotics in architecture. This essay demonstrates how the socioeconomic proximity of the villagers to the ruling authorities at the time—namely the Palembang Darussalam Sultanate and the Dutch East Indies—is related to the shape of the buildings in these two villages. The result of the result would be a basis of next studies and also program of city development, especially in Palembang City.

Abstract

There are areas and historical elements of the city which can still be found physically and some physically no longer exist. In areas where the physical can still be found, the community's cognitive of its existence can still be easily detected. Things are different in historical areas where the physical elements are no longer exist. Palembang has these two situations. Previous study on the significance of city elements conducted in 2019 and 2020 shows there are 22 historical elements of the city that are important. All of them are the exists element buildings that can be found physically. Among of them, there are three elements that were the most significant in terms of memorability, imagibility, and attachment. The three elements are Kuto Besak Fort, Ampera Bridge, and the Great Mosque. This study aims to strengthen the findings by determining important historical elements and areas based on the cognitive of the urban community. This research has two objectives: (1) determine historical elements and areas; and (2) map physical and spatial patterns of elements and/or areas that are considered significant by the community. For this reason, the study mapped elements of the historical area using the mental map results from 30 respondents and then mapped it in the structure of the Palembang city map. The results confirm that these three elements are the most inherent elements in the respondents cognitive. Some of the new elements are listed in the mental map result as new city elements and old elements with new names. This study found that areas and historical elements of the city that physically still exist are more embedded in people's cognitive than those that do not exist and only remain in name (toponym). The conclusion of this study is that efforts are needed to revive the cognitive understanding of the community through reconstruction in digital form.

Abstract

The use of acoustic materials in the Indonesian Bethel Church Building of Musi Palem Indah Palembang is very much needed considering this building functions as a worship space. The use of a sound system and audio-visual equipment as well as sound coming from the congregation will affect the noise level produced, which is 80 to 85 dB, where the normal threshold is only 30 - 50 dB. Internal noise factor is also influenced by external noise generated from vehicles and activities that take place around the building. The choice of acoustic material used can be effective if it is in accordance with the amount of sound production or the level of noise that arises. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of acoustic materials used in Bethel Church of Indonesia Musi Palem Indah Palembang through measurement and analysis using descriptive quantitative methods. This study concludes that the acoustic material used at the Bethel Indonesia Musi Palem Indah Palembang Church is less effective in reducing noise levels, especially during the worship process.

Abstract

Public open space is an important residential facility to create a healthy living space for city residents. Facilities that perform a major role in accommodating the activities of community life in urban settlements. In riverside settlements, riverbank areas have a large land potential for building public open spaces. The riverside open space is an important element in making the characteristics of a riverside city. This study aims to identifies the form, distribution, and size of open space in settlements along the Musi riverbank of Palembang. This study also observes the function of open space in accomodating residents’ activities. The research uses rationalistic methods, through field observations in the form of observations of physical settings and functional aspects. The results show that the open space for public interaction and activities is evenly distributed in various sizes and locations, but is not supported by supporting facilities. Meanwhile, the community creates alternative open spaces to accommodate their various activities for the solution of lacking public space. Without an opening of new land, revitalization of the settlement infrastructure should be focus on improve the informal open spaces by providing a sitting area with benches, lighting, shade, trees, and stall area could increase comfortability, safety, and leisurity of the public open space.

Abstract

The degree of publicness is an approach to assessing the extent to which an open space is public. This approach has grown rapidly over the last twenty years, particularly in Europe and the United States. This article describes the dynamics and development of publicity research through a literature review. Eight scientific journals and one book were qualitatively reviewed using the content analysis method. This article finds that the key to the degree of publicity is adjusting the indicators to the context of the place and culture of an urban open space. In Indonesia, the cultural context of the city development process and local characteristics are two important things in the application of the degree of publicity approach.

Abstract

Urban river corridors have an important role in the development of cities. Since early civilizations rivers have served as navigation, irrigation, domestic and industrial water supply, defense, and energy production. In general, rivers have hydrological and ecological functions as a buffer for the natural balance. The relationship between upstream, middle, and downstream has causal connectivity that will affect each other. The river that passes through the city space will cause problems if it is not managed properly. But, engineering projects on the natural dynamics of rivers have now reached a critical point. This research uses qualitative research methods, through observing phenomena in the field, collecting primary data and secondary data to produce new findings. This research found that various pressures from climate change, spatial changes, and the increasing number of flood events have made all these efforts to solve river problem need to be rethought. Various government projects such as flood prevention and river normalization projects continue to this day. However, it has not been able to fully respond to river problems. Thus, there is a need for a strategy to initiate the transition to a more resilient and sustainable approach.

Abstract

The industrial revolution 4.0 development affects various aspects, such as online transportation which can offerred people to get easy access to everywhere. Along with its rapid development, the presence of online transportation has now become a factor that causes congestion. This is indicated by the large number of online transportation drivers who park along the sidewalks. The relationship between space and activities is called setting. Individual perception of sidewalk user setting is important in assessing environmental attributes, especially the accessibility attributes on the sidewalk. This study aims to find the relationship between sidewalk user settings and accessibility attributes. This study uses qualitative research and an exploratory approach with a person-centered mapping method. The case study is in the Transmart and KFC area, Setia Budi Street, Semarang City. The results of the study reveal that the accessibility attribute settings are highly dependent on the user's point of view. Then the achievement of the effectiveness of the accessibility attribute on the sidewalk is the effectiveness of time. One indicator that has the potential to abuse sidewalks is the cost indicator. Through the person-centered mapping method, the most significant movement scheme occurred on online transportation drivers because of the massive quantity and tend to pile up in one place.

Abstract

Urban flooding that is occuring currently in several megacities in the world is a well-known event, this event is also happening in the City of Palembang. Annual floods that occur in Palembang are common and natural Nevertheless, these frequent floods have a negative impact, devastative, and threaten the well-being of the lives of local residents, especially in several flood-prone areas on the Musi riparian and Musi tributaries. Several disaster management structures have been studied to minimize errors, one of which is by implementing the Amphibious Architecture in residential buildings. This study aims to identify strategic locations that meet the building criteria for Amphibious Houses to help residents adapt to flooding with adaptive design. A SWOT analysis was conducted which aims to determine the most strategic location for amphibious architecture according to the highest scoring results. Scoring is done by assigning a value of 8 variables to seven flood-prone locations in Palembang. Those variables are: strengths (suitable flood heights and new developments); weaknesses (inappropriate flood heights and land use); opportunities (suitability of land for the application of amphibious structures and other structures); and threats (costs and introduction of new structural systems to the community). The conclusions of this paper are expected to contribute in the implementation of Amphibious Architecture in flood disaster mitigation system in Palembang.

Abstract

During approximately one year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the obligation to carry out the 3M health protocol formed many new habits. This new habit brings everyone to the new normal era, where things that were previously rarely done become mandatory to be implemented. Both modern and traditional markets are obliged to facilitate visitors to still be able to obey health protocols. However, compared to modern markets, traditional market managers tend to be less able to provide facilities that can support the implementation of health protocols, especially in terms of building design. This study aims to find solutions for adapting traditional market designs in the new normal era. It is hoped that this research can be useful as a design reference for planning or developing traditional markets in the face of the new normal era. The research method used is a qualitative analysis method with research results in the form of adapting traditional market building designs in the new normal era by referring to six design characteristics that are adapted to health protocols, namely having lots of air ventilation, circular market stall layout, one-way circulation system, and expanding the entrance area as a starting point for screening. Futhermore responding to pandemic conditions, efforts to support social interaction as one of the attractions for shopping at traditional markets can be done by placing acrylic barriers, open spaces, and areas for drive thru.
