Abstract

This study investigates the metaphors of happiness employed by santri in Indonesian Islamic Islamic boarding schools (Islamic boarding school) and examines how these metaphors reflect their emotional, social, and spiritual experiences. Utilizing a qualitative approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and conceptual metaphor analysis, this research reveals that happiness is often metaphorized through spiritual imagery, such as “happiness is peace of mind” and “happiness is knowing God (ma‘rifatullāh).”These expressions illustrate how santri conceptualize happiness as intertwined with religious devotion, communal worship, and moral discipline. The santri's frame of mind, which varies from the expression of daily happiness, can also be influenced by the social and cultural context of the Islamic boarding school. In addition, the metaphor of happiness also plays an important role in shaping santri self-identity, strengthening collective ethics, internalizing religious values. This finding confirms that metaphor is not only a means of communication, but also a medium for conflicting meanings and social realities. The research contributes conceptually by applying metaphor theory within a traditional Islamic educational context and methodologically by highlighting local religious narratives in the study of language and emotion. These findings offer new directions for exploring the nexus of affect, spirituality, and discourse in Muslim minority and majority settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of zakat and several macroeconomic variables on poverty and welfare levels as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI) in provinces in Indonesia. This study employs a descriptive quantitative approach using secondary panel data from 34 provinces in Indonesia over a ten-year period (2014–2023). A simultaneous equation model is applied to capture the reciprocal relationship between poverty and welfare (HDI). The variables analyzed include zakat, economic growth, inflation, investment, and labor. The results show that zakat, economic growth, inflation, investment, labor, and HDI simultaneously have a significant effect on poverty across Indonesian provinces. Meanwhile, zakat, economic growth, investment, labor, and poverty significantly influence the HDI. Partially, zakat, investment, labor, and HDI have a significant negative effect on poverty, indicating their role in reducing poverty levels. In contrast, zakat, economic growth, investment, and labor have a significant positive effect on HDI, suggesting their contribution to improving welfare. Inflation has a significant negative effect on poverty, while poverty has a negative but statistically insignificant effect on HDI. This study is limited to provincial-level secondary data and selected macroeconomic variables over a ten-year period. Future research may include additional socioeconomic variables or extend the observation period. This study provides empirical evidence on the role of zakat as an Islamic social finance instrument in reducing poverty and improving social welfare in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of the integration of knowledge and faith in the thought of Badiuzzaman Said Nursi and to analyse its contribution to modern Islamic educational strategies. This study is motivated by the tendency to separate science and faith in Islamic educational practice. Consequently, the thought of Badiuzzaman Said Nursi is considered relevant as it offers an integrative approach that utilises science as a means to strengthen faith. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research methods. Data was obtained through an analysis of Badiuzzaman Said Nursi’s works in Indonesian, as well as various supporting literature such as books, academic articles, and relevant previous research. The research findings indicate that, according to Badiuzzaman Said Nursi, knowledge and faith are two complementary and inseparable elements. This concept contributes to modern Islamic educational strategies through the strengthening of the spiritual dimension within the curriculum, a learning approach based on ayat kauniyah, and the development of students’ character to be rational, faithful, and of good moral character. This research, particularly in Indonesia, has applied the ideas of Badiuzzaman Said Nursi. Examples include studies at the Faculty of Tarbiyah, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and the Nursemesta Foundation. This research offers an integrative perspective that can serve as the foundation for a holistic Islamic educational strategy, one that is adaptive to scientific developments yet remains rooted in the values of faith.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between the intensity of memorizing the Qur’an and the short-term memory of female students at an Islamic boarding school for Qur’an memorizers. This research used an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted at Al-Askar Islamic Boarding School in Kendari City. A total of 77 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data on the intensity of memorizing the Qur’an were obtained from students’ memorization records, while short-term memory was measured using the digit span test. The data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results showed that 50.6% of respondents had a low intensity of memorizing the Qur’an, while 49.4% had a high intensity. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between the intensity of memorizing the Qur’an and short-term memory, with a p-value of 0.001 and a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.413. This result indicates a moderate positive correlation, meaning that higher memorization intensity is associated with better short-term memory. The findings suggest that regular Qur’an memorization may contribute to improving cognitive functions, particularly short-term memory. However, this study is limited by its cross-sectional design and the use of a relatively small sample from a single Islamic boarding school. This study provides empirical evidence on the relationship between Qur’an memorization practices and cognitive performance, particularly short-term memory among female students in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by Amil Zakat Institutions (LAZ) in Southeast Sulawesi to enhance zakat collection using the Business Model Canvas integrated with the Social Enterprise Model Canvas approach. A descriptive qualitative method was applied, focusing on two institutions: Baitul Maal Hidayatullah (BMH) and Wahdah Inspirasi Zakat (WIZ). Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The results reveal that strategic collaboration with public institutions, such as Baznas and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, as well as partnerships with private companies like PLN and Telkomsel, significantly improve zakat collection performance. Additionally, diversification of funding channels and the adoption of digital technology expand outreach, enhance transparency, and strengthen accountability in zakat management. This study is limited to two LAZ institutions in Southeast Sulawesi, which may restrict generalizability. However, the findings provide practical insights for zakat institutions in developing collaborative networks and leveraging digital innovation to improve performance. This research offers a novel integration of the Business Model Canvas and Social Enterprise Model Canvas in the context of zakat management, highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration and digital transformation to increase efficiency, transparency, and public trust in zakat institutions.

Abstract

This study examines the potential role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mitigating asymmetric information in Profit-Loss Sharing (PLS) financing models within Islamic banking. Although PLS contracts such as mudarabah and musharakah embody the core Islamic finance principle of risk-sharing, their practical implementation remains limited due to moral hazard and adverse selection problems arising from information asymmetry between banks and entrepreneurs. This research aims to explore how AI technologies can enhance transparency, monitoring, and decision-making processes to strengthen the viability of PLS financing in Islamic banking. The study employs a systematic library research approach by reviewing 86 scholarly articles indexed in Scopus related to Islamic finance, asymmetric information, and AI applications in financial services. The analysis synthesizes existing theoretical and empirical insights to develop a conceptual framework illustrating how AI technologies, such as machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and natural language processing (NLP), can support both pre-financing and post-financing processes in PLS contracts. The findings indicate that AI technologies can significantly reduce asymmetric information in PLS financing. Machine learning enhances borrower assessment and credit profiling, IoT enables real-time monitoring of financed business performance, and NLP facilitates financial reporting analysis and sharia compliance verification. These tools improve transparency, strengthen risk identification, and reduce the likelihood of adverse selection and moral hazard, thereby supporting a more sustainable and efficient Islamic banking model. This study is limited to conceptual and literature-based analysis and does not include empirical testing of AI applications in Islamic banking operations. Future research should conduct empirical studies and case-based investigations to validate the proposed framework and examine practical implementation challenges. This study contributes by integrating AI technology perspectives with Islamic finance principles to propose a conceptual framework for strengthening PLS financing. It offers new insights into how digital innovation can support the sustainability and competitiveness of Islamic banking.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of a multiparty cooperative model in developing pesantren-based halal tourism and its contribution to strengthening the local sharia economic ecosystem in Banyumas Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving pesantren leaders, cooperative managers, local communities, and tourism stakeholders. The data were analyzed using an interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by triangulation techniques to ensure validity and reliability. The findings reveal that pesantren institutions play a strategic role as socio-religious and economic hubs in supporting halal tourism development. However, the absence of an integrated institutional framework limits the optimization of economic benefits. The study proposes a multiparty cooperative model that integrates pesantren, communities, government, and business actors. This model enhances coordination, promotes equitable resource distribution, and strengthens sectors such as halal culinary, religious tourism, and creative industries, contributing significantly to local economic resilience. This study is limited to a specific regional context, which may affect generalizability. However, it provides important implications for policymakers and practitioners in designing inclusive, community-based halal tourism strategies rooted in Islamic economic principles. This research offers a novel integrative model linking pesantren institutions, cooperative economics, and halal tourism within a unified framework. It contributes to the literature by demonstrating how Islamic social institutions can be operationalized to strengthen sustainable local sharia economies.
