Abstract

General Background: Dengue fever remains a persistent public health concern in Indonesia, particularly in densely populated urban areas where environmental conditions support mosquito breeding. Specific Background: The Surabaya municipal government initiated a community-based Larvae Monitoring Jury Program implemented by Surabaya Hebat cadres to reduce dengue transmission at the neighborhood level. Knowledge Gap: Despite widespread implementation, limited research has examined how cadre roles function operationally within this program framework. Aims: This study aims to analyze the roles of Surabaya Hebat cadres in the Larvae Monitoring Jury Program in Kutisari Indah Barat using Bintoro Tjokroamidjojo’s role theory encompassing motivator, facilitator, and mobilizer dimensions. Results: Findings show that cadres actively conduct routine inspections, community education, and environmental monitoring, contributing to preventive efforts, yet face obstacles including unclear task distribution, limited initiative, inconsistent community engagement, and uneven program acceptance across areas. Novelty: The study provides a contextualized qualitative analysis of grassroots health governance by mapping practical cadre functions to established role theory. Implications: Continuous evaluation, clearer role allocation, and strengthened community participation are necessary to ensure sustainable program implementation and improved dengue prevention outcomes. Abstract

General Background: Reading is a complex cognitive process requiring integration of linguistic skills, prior knowledge, and comprehension strategies. Specific Background: Many junior secondary students struggle to understand English texts, particularly recount texts, due to low interest, limited practice, and difficulty grasping content meaning. Knowledge Gap: Although various instructional strategies exist, the KWL Plus strategy has not been implemented at the studied school, leaving uncertainty about its classroom outcomes in this context. Aims: This study investigates whether the KWL Plus strategy improves ninth-grade students’ reading comprehension achievement compared with conventional instruction. Results: Using a true experimental pretest–posttest design with experimental and control groups, both groups showed significant score gains, but the experimental group achieved a higher mean increase (14.040) than the control group (7.083), with significance values of 0.000. Novelty: The study provides empirical evidence from a setting where the strategy had not previously been applied, demonstrating stronger gains under structured metacognitive instruction. Abstract

Background: Physiological adaptation during adolescence is influenced by lifestyle and environmental factors, particularly in urban and rural settings. Understanding cardiorespiratory responses to physical activity is crucial for assessing health reserves in young individuals. Aim of the Study: To evaluate physical development and the functional status of the cardiorespiratory system at rest and after physical load among first-year female medical college students from urban and rural areas. Methodology: The study included female students aged 15–16. Physical development was assessed using somatometry (height, weight, chest circumference) and physiometry methods (vital lung capacity [VC], tidal volume [TV], expiratory reserve volume [ERV], heart rate [HR], and blood pressure [SBP, DBP]). Percentile methods and spirometry were applied to measure external respiration indices. Physical load was induced using G.N. Apanasenko’s squat test. Data were processed statistically using integrative indices (vital index, Erisman index). Results: After loading, HR significantly increased in both groups: from 84.6±2.3 to 130.0±4.6 in group I and from 78.1±2.1 to 134.7±3.4 in group II. SBP and DBP also rose markedly, reaching 150.0±5.0 and 162.0±3.4 mmHg, respectively. Cardiac output (CO) increased to 12.69±0.33 L/min in group I and 12.92±0.25 L/min in group II. VC, TV, and ERV remained largely unchanged, while SpO₂ dropped significantly after loading to 82.7±1.4% and 84.0±1.6% in groups I and II, respectively. Conclusion: Urban and rural students exhibited similar adaptive patterns, with rural students showing slightly better oxygen saturation and CO response, suggesting higher functional reserves and greater cardiorespiratory adaptability under physical stress.Highlight : Heart rate and blood pressure rose significantly after physical load. Oxygen saturation dropped, more stable in rural students. Rural students showed better functional reserves and adaptability Keywords : Female Students, Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Cardiorespiratory System, Physical Activity

Abstract

General Background: The relationship between military spending and economic growth has long been debated, with contrasting theoretical perspectives suggesting either positive stimulus effects or harmful crowding-out impacts. Specific Background: Iraq represents a critical case, as the post-2003 political and security instability substantially reshaped its public expenditure structure, with military allocations absorbing significant resources. Knowledge Gap: While prior studies have examined this relationship in Iraq, few have applied advanced econometric approaches across the extended period of 2004–2023, leaving uncertainty regarding short- versus long-term effects. Aims: This study analyzes the impact of military spending on Iraq’s GDP using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to evaluate both short-run and long-run dynamics. Results: The findings reveal that military spending has only a short-term effect on GDP, while no significant long-term relationship exists. Moreover, excessive reliance on consumer-oriented military expenditures, coupled with weak domestic defense industries, limited Iraq’s capacity to translate security outlays into sustainable economic growth. Novelty: By applying ARDL modeling to two decades of Iraqi data, this study provides a nuanced distinction between transitory and persistent impacts of defense spending. Implications: The results suggest that fiscal policies should balance security needs with investments in productive sectors, redirecting resources toward infrastructure, education, and healthcare to foster long-term stability and growth.Highlight : Military spending in Iraq was mostly consumer, not productive. The ARDL model confirmed only a short-term impact on GDP. High defense focus reduced resources for education, health, and infrastructure.
