Abstract

Elevated levels of Fetuin-A, a protease inhibitor belonging to the cystatin family, have raised questions about its role in the pathogenesis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), the most prevalent endocrinopathy in reproductive-aged females. This case-control study, conducted in Iraq, aimed to assess changes in Fetuin-A levels among Iraqi women with PCOS. A convenient sample of 90 women, comprising 45 PCOS cases and 45 healthy controls, was enrolled. Fetuin-A levels were measured and found to be significantly higher in the PCOS group compared to controls. Additionally, significant positive correlations were observed between Fetuin-A levels and fasting plasma glucose, fasting serum insulin, insulin resistance, luteinizing hormone, and serum testosterone. Using a receiver operating characteristic curve, a cutoff point of 502.00 ng/mL was determined for predicting positive Fetuin-A levels, with a sensitivity and specificity of 84.4% and 73.3%, respectively. This study suggests that Fetuin-A could serve as a valuable marker for both screening and evaluating PCOS and its potential late consequences, including metabolic syndrome. Highlights: Elevated Fetuin-A Levels: This study reveals significantly higher Fetuin-A levels in PCOS, shedding light on its potential role in the pathogenesis of the syndrome. Correlations with Metabolic Factors: Positive correlations between Fetuin-A and key metabolic markers like fasting glucose, insulin resistance, and luteinizing hormone highlight its relevance in the context of PCOS and metabolic health. Screening Potential: The identified cutoff point for predicting positive Fetuin-A levels offers a promising tool for screening and evaluating PCOS and associated late consequences, particularly metabolic syndrome.

Abstract

This study investigates the acute toxicity of white turi flower extract (Sesbania grandiflora) on kidney electrolyte levels in rats (Rattus norvegicus). Conducted at Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo, male Wistar rats were divided into control and treatment groups, receiving 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000 mg/kgBW doses. Symptoms of toxicity included lethargy and hair loss, but no deaths occurred. Despite normal macroscopic kidney observations, sodium and potassium levels significantly increased with higher doses (p=0.000). These findings suggest that high doses of white turi flower extract can affect kidney electrolytes, indicating potential toxicity. Further research is needed to assess long-term safety for medicinal use. Highlights: 1. High doses increase sodium and potassium in rat kidneys.2. Symptoms: lethargy, hair loss, no fatalities.3. Requires further research for long-term safety. Keywords: Sesbania grandiflora, acute toxicity, kidney electrolytes, sodium, potassium

Abstract

Learning that provides space for children to be able to solve problems and make decisions independently is one of the learning strategies that can be used to improve children's critical thinking skills. The STEAM method is a reform in the world of education that combines science, mathematics in order to have a logical and rational mindset, so that children can understand phenomena critically and logically. The research was carried out by conducting direct observation in learning activities in the classroom. Then the results of the observations were corroborated by interviews conducted with school principals, class educators and students who directly played a role in the process of implementing the STEAM method with Loosepart. Data analysis in this research uses analysis which includes three stages, namely data reduction is the process of selecting, focusing on simplification, abstracting and transforming raw data that emerges from written records in the field. In stimulating children's critical thinking, educators provide opportunities to observe and explore the tools and materials in front of them with various senses. So that children are encouraged to be more curious about what they will do with various tools and materials. In this way, critical thinking in children can be stimulated so that children have the ability to ask questions and find out about information and observe and explore the tools and materials around them, they also have the ability to solve problems through play activities, and have the confidence to make decisions. in carrying out their activities. Highlights: Interdisciplinary Approach: STEAM method integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, fostering a holistic and logical mindset in children. Loose Parts Play: Utilizing loose parts in learning activities stimulates curiosity, encouraging children to explore and solve problems independently. Observation and Exploration: Educators play a crucial role in providing opportunities for children to observe, explore, ask questions, and make decisions, fostering critical thinking skills.
