Abstract

Abstract

Background: Service-sector micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play a vital role in regional economic development; however, many continue to face challenges in maintaining competitiveness due to limited human resource management (HRM) capabilities, inadequate workforce development, and resource constraints. Understanding context-specific HRM strategies is therefore essential to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of service-sector MSMEs Objective: This study aims to analyse human resource management (HRM) strategies for enhancing the competitiveness of service-sector micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Manado City. Methods: A qualitative approach with a multiple case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and documentation involving 16 informants, including business owners, managers, senior employees, and MSME support stakeholders. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis to identify key themes related to HRM practices, the role of HRM in improving competitiveness, and factors supporting or constraining its implementation. Results: The findings indicate that HRM strategies in service-sector MSMEs are contextual and adaptive, emphasizing relationship-based recruitment, on-the-job learning for competency development, and participative leadership by business owners. These strategies contribute to the development of employee capabilities, including service competence, loyalty, and work commitment, which serve as critical foundations for MSME competitiveness. However, limited resources and restricted access to formal training remain significant challenges in optimizing the strategic role of HRM. Conclusion: This study contributes to the enrichment of the strategic HRM literature by providing context-based insights from service-sector MSMEs in emerging regional economies.

Abstract

Background: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Sleep disturbances may increase seizure recurrence, yet evidence on their association remains limited, particularly in Indonesia. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the association between sleep quality and seizure recurrence, as well as its correlation with seizure frequency among patients with epilepsy. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional framework. The study participants were patients with epilepsy who met the predefined inclusion criteria. Data regarding sleep quality, sleep patterns, and excessive daytime sleepiness were collected using validated questionnaire instruments, while seizure recurrence data were obtained from patients’ clinical histories. Results: A total of 34 patients were included in the analysis. Poor sleep patterns were significantly associated with seizure recurrence (p < 0.001; OR = 75.0; 95% CI: 6.99–805.23), although the wide confidence interval indicates uncertainty due to the small sample size. Excessive daytime sleepiness was not significantly associated with seizure recurrence (p = 0.078). Sleep patterns showed a strong correlation with seizure frequency (r = 0.807; p < 0.001), while excessive daytime sleepiness demonstrated a moderate correlation (r = 0.456; p = 0.007). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) demonstrated good discriminatory ability for seizure recurrence (AUC = 0.931; cut-off value ≥5). Conclusion: Poor sleep quality is significantly associated with seizure recurrence and increased seizure frequency among patients with epilepsy. Routine screening using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) with a cut-off value of ≥5 may support seizure management and requires further validation through longitudinal studies.

Abstract

Background: Public hospitals in emerging countries face sustainability pressures due to high dependence on national health insurance reimbursement systems. Objective: This study examines how RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang, a public tertiary referral hospital in Indonesia, transformed hospital marketing into a strategic capability to support payer diversification and healthcare business sustainability. Methods: An embedded single-case study using descriptive quantitative indicators, this study analyzed secondary institutional data spanning 2024 to 2025, with comparative trend analysis focusing on the pre-transformation baseline (2024) and post-transformation period (2025), including strategic business plans, marketing performance reports, innovation documents, and financial indicators. Trend Growth Analytics was applied using growth rate, contribution ratio, payer diversification indicators, revenue composition analysis, and financial resilience indicators. Results: The findings show that non-JKN outpatient visits increased by 23%, non-JKN inpatient visits increased by 105%, and non-JKN revenue increased from IDR 110.35 billion in 2024 to IDR 233.18 billion in 2025. The contribution of non-JKN revenue to operational revenue increased from 8% to 16%, while EBITDA improved from negative IDR 10 billion to positive IDR 43 billion. These findings do not imply direct causality but indicate temporal associations and strategic contribution patterns between marketing transformation, payer diversification, and financial resilience. Conclusion: This study contributes to healthcare management literature by positioning hospital marketing transformation as a dynamic organizational capability supporting public hospital sustainability within emerging-country healthcare systems.

Abstract

Background: Informal settlement upgrading requires collaborative arrangements that are responsive to local conditions and stakeholder configurations. Objective: This study maps the roles and relational dynamics of key actors involved in upgrading the Tomang Banjir Kanal informal settlement in Jakarta, Indonesia. Methods: Stakeholders were identified through in-depth interviews, field observations, and local census data. Stakeholder positions were analyzed based on their levels of interest and influence in the upgrading process, while inter-actor relationships were examined using social network analysis. Results: The findings indicate that key stakeholders in multi-actor collaboration include the West Jakarta Municipal Government/Mayor’s Office as the central operational coordination hub; the Jakarta Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) as the actor responsible for strengthening political legitimacy, budgetary support, and oversight of sectoral agencies; and the Jakarta Provincial Housing and Settlement Agency as the technical and programmatic lead. These actors are supported by neighborhood leaders (RT/RW) and community figures who function as brokers of local aspirations and maintain social stability, as well as by the Kampung Collaboration Committee, which serves as an institutional bridge connecting government agencies, community groups, and developers. Conclusion: From a technical governance perspective, the National Land Agency (BPN) has limited direct involvement but plays an essential enabling role in resolving land tenure issues, which determine the feasibility of collaborative slum upgrading. These findings highlight the need for stronger inter-agency coordination, effective land tenure resolution, and community-based collaboration mechanisms to support sustainable and inclusive upgrading programs.

Abstract

Background: The rapid and uncertain dynamics of the BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Non-linear, and Incomprehensible) era require schools to develop adaptive leadership models to achieve sustainable institutional development. Traditional leadership approaches often face challenges in responding to complex educational changes, technological demands, and organizational uncertainties. Objective: This study aims to examine the optimization of school principals’ leadership through an Agile Organizationapproach to support sustainable school development. Methods: This study employed a qualitative case study approach at Ibnu Khaldun Islamic School Cirebon. Data were collected through observations, interviews, focus group discussions, and documentation involving foundation administrators, school principals, teachers, and education staff. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis, IFAS-EFAS analysis, the TOWS Matrix, and strategic analysis. Results: The findings indicate that the implementation of school principals’ leadership roles based on the EMASLIM framework has not been fully optimized, particularly in strengthening innovation, collaboration, digital transformation, and continuous improvement. The application of Agile Organization principles remains limited in terms of establishing a shared vision, empowering teams, facilitating adaptive decision-making, promoting organizational learning, and utilizing technology effectively. The main challenges include limited leadership competencies, insufficient training opportunities, weak communication systems, inadequate infrastructure, and unclear organizational regulations. Strategic analysis recommends SO strategies that focus on leadership transformation, governance strengthening, human resource development, technology integration, learning quality improvement, and partnership expansion. Conclusion: Optimizing school principals’ leadership through an Agile Organization approach can strengthen school adaptability, innovation capacity, and sustainable development. This study contributes to educational management by integrating agile principles into school leadership practices to address contemporary educational challenges.

Abstract

Background: Digital transformation has enhanced efficiency in Indonesia’s banking industry while creating increasingly complex digital risk challenges. This study examines the digital risk management strategy implemented by Bank XYZ, focusing on the absence of a comprehensive risk management framework and the inadequate fulfillment of internal and external requirements. Objective: This study aims to analyze gaps in Bank XYZ’s digital risk management practices and develop an integrated strategy based on the People, Process, Technology, and Organization (PPTO) framework, incorporating ISO 31000:2018 and COBIT 2019 to support sustainable digital transformation. Methods: This research adopts the ISO 31000:2018 framework, COBIT 2019, and digital risk theory, integrating risk management principles with the People, Process, Technology, and Organization (PPTO) approach. The study employs an applied research methodology using qualitative data obtained from interviews with key informants, internal data from Bank XYZ, regulatory documents, and industry best practices. Results:  The findings indicate that while Bank XYZ has established digital risk management strategies, their implementation and adequacy remain suboptimal. Strategic recommendations were developed based on risk analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) results, utilizing ISO 31000:2018 and COBIT 2019 frameworks across four primary areas: strengthening human resources and digital risk culture, optimizing business processes, enhancing the automation and integration of risk monitoring systems, and improving digital risk governance at the organizational level. Conclusion: The study concludes that the success of digital risk management at Bank XYZ is highly dependent on the consistency of implementation across all organizational levels and the institution’s readiness to adapt to the evolving risk landscape in the digital era.

Abstract

Background: This study examines the implementation of Betawi language preservation policy in an urban context, focusing on policy design, implementation capacity, and collaborative governance. Objective: This study aims to identify factors limiting effective Betawi language revitalization in urban communities. Methods: A qualitative case study was conducted using policy document analysis, in-depth interviews, and field observations. Data were analyzed using George C. Edwards III’s policy implementation framework and Ansell and Gash’s collaborative governance model. Results: Despite strong normative legitimacy, the policy has not achieved functional language revitalization. Weak translation of regulations into operational programs, limited human resources and learning instruments, and fragmented cross-actor coordination have produced symbolic outputs without transforming everyday language use. The study introduces the concept of symbolic-performative policy, describing policies that generate cultural legitimacy through institutionalized ceremonial activities but fail to internalize language functions in urban communities. Education remains the primary implementation arena but is not yet integrated into a sustainable language-use ecosystem. Conclusion: The policy’s limited effectiveness stems from disconnections among policy design, implementation capacity, and collaborative governance. Urban regional-language revitalization therefore requires an integrated, cross-sectoral language-use ecosystem beyond regulatory and ceremonial approaches.

Abstract

Background: Discourse on the relationship between Islam and science in Indonesia has grown substantially. However, the epistemological positions of its leading proponents have rarely been compared side by side, leaving a gap in understanding how their models converge and diverge and what these similarities and differences mean for Islamic higher education. Objective: This study compares Mulyadhi Kartanegara’s, Amin Abdullah’s, and Imam Suprayogo’s epistemological perspectives on the integration of Islam and science and examines the implications of their integrative models for the development of Islamic higher education in Indonesia. Methods: This qualitative library study employs a philosophical approach and uses critical-analytical and comparative methods. Primary texts written by the three scholars were coded according to ontological, epistemological, and axiological categories. The findings were then triangulated with secondary literature to enhance the credibility of the interpretations. Results: Although the three scholars differ in terminology and emphasis, their perspectives converge on integration as the model that most comprehensively unifies religious and modern sciences within a single, mutually reinforcing epistemic framework. Conclusion: This study affirms integration as the most viable model for advancing Islamic scholarship in Indonesia and provides a comparative framework for future research on Islamic epistemology and higher education curricula.

Abstract

Background: The artisan fashion industry faces challenges in renewing its audience, particularly in reaching Generation Z women with strong digital preferences and environmental awareness. Bhumi Khayuna, a sub-brand of Jarit, experiences identity ambiguity and limited visual differentiation, reducing the effectiveness of its marketing and rebranding efforts on social media. Objective: This study aims to develop a rebranding strategy for Bhumi Khayuna to strengthen brand identity, enhance engagement, and connect with Generation Z female consumers through relevant digital communication. Methods: This qualitative study employed five stages: identifying brand problems, analyzing internal brand elements, evaluating competitors and audience preferences through surveys and social media observations, developing visual communication strategies, and validating the proposed rebranding strategy. Data were analyzed through triangulation of interviews, observations, and competitor content analysis. Results: The findings indicate that Bhumi Khayuna requires an independent visual identity, differentiated communication strategies, and social media content integrating sustainability narratives, modern aesthetics, and community engagement. Generation Z consumers show interest in functional products, ethical production, transparency, and interactive brand experiences. The integration of clear brand architecture, AIDA-based copywriting, earth-tone visuals, and sustainability storytelling achieved a 72% preference among respondents. Conclusion: This study provides practical guidance for artisan fashion brands in developing authentic and audience-oriented rebranding strategies while contributing to research on branding, visual communication, and Generation Z consumer behavior in the digital era.
