Abstract

This study aims to examine and reconstruct the approach of tafsir ilmi (scientific exegesis) in Bambang Pranggono’s book Scientific Miracles in the Qur’an through the perspective of integrative tafsir methodology. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research and is descriptive-analytical in nature. The data are derived from primary sources, namely Pranggono’s work, and supported by relevant literature on scientific exegesis, tafsir methodology, and the relationship between the Qur’an and science. The findings indicate that the approach used in the book tends to emphasize the aspects of scientific miraculousness (al-i‘jaz) and explanatory function of verses through science (al-tabyin). However, it still contains several methodological limitations, such as a tendency toward justificative interpretation, insufficient linguistic (bayani) analysis, and the absence of a systematic synthesis. Therefore, this study proposes a reconstruction of tafsir ilmi through an integrative approach that harmonizes revelation, reason, and science. Within this framework, the Qur’an is positioned as the primary source of truth, while science functions as an empirical tool to understand natural phenomena. Consequently, scientific exegesis is no longer seen as merely an attempt to justify scientific theories, but rather as a constructive dialogue between revelation and scientific knowledge. This approach is expected to produce a more comprehensive, contextual, and relevant understanding of the Qur’an in response to contemporary developments.

Abstract

Studies of local interpretations of the archipelago continue to develop, but a number of works by regional scholars still do not receive adequate academic attention, one of which is KH's Tafsir Al-Bayan Fi Ma'rifati Ma'ani al-Qur'an. Shodiq Hamzah Usman, caretaker of the Ash-Shodiqiyah Islamic Boarding School in Semarang. This commentary was written during the Covid-19 pandemic (2020–2021), covering a complete interpretation of 30 juz using Javanese Chromo Latin as a writing medium. This article aims to examine two main aspects: KH's profile and intellectual background. Shodiq Hamzah, as well as the interpretation of tanzih and anti-anthropomorphism in Q.S. Al-A'raf verse 54, using a descriptive-analytical approach. The results of the study show that KH. Shodiq Hamzah, through the ijmali method and the adabi-ijtima'i pattern, interprets the verse with the principle of tanzih which is in line with the Ash'ariyah understanding, namely shifting the literal meaning of "bersemayam" (istawa) to the figurative meaning (takwil) in the form of power (istila'/mulkan), in order to avoid the society from an anthropomorphistic understanding of Allah. The delivery of theological messages through simple narratives in Javanese has proven to be effective communicatively, but on the other hand it reduces doctrinal precision and limits the reach of the message of faith only to those who understand the Javanese language and culture.

Abstract

Fasting during Ramadan is an obligation for every Muslim who meets the requirements. However, Islamic law provides concessions (rukhsah) under certain conditions, including for heavy workers. This study aims to analyze the legal ruling of fasting for heavy workers from an Islamic jurisprudence perspective. The research uses a qualitative method with a normative approach through literature study. The results indicate that heavy workers are obligated to fast as long as they are capable. However, if the work causes severe hardship (masyaqqah) or endangers health, they are allowed to break the fast and must make up for it (qadha) on another day. Therefore, the ruling is conditional and emphasizes balance between religious obligations and the protection of life.

Abstract

The accurate pronunciation of Arabic letters is one of the essential aspects of Tahsin learning because it directly influences the correctness of Qur'anic recitation. However, many students still experience difficulties in distinguishing letters with similar articulation points, particularly Ṣād (ص), Sīn (س), and Syīn (ش). This study aims to analyze the common pronunciation errors of these three letters and identify the factors contributing to such mistakes in Tahsin learning. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation of students' recitation practices. The findings reveal that pronunciation errors are mainly caused by limited understanding of makhaarijul huruf, inadequate practice, and the influence of the learners' native language. In addition, the lack of continuous corrective feedback from instructors contributes to the persistence of these errors. The study concludes that the application of intensive Tahsin methods, regular repetition exercises, and direct teacher guidance can significantly improve students' ability to pronounce Ṣād, Sīn, and Syīn correctly. Therefore, strengthening the teaching of makharijul huruf is essential to enhance the quality and accuracy of Qur'anic recitation.

Abstract

Surah Al-‘Alaq, verse 1, was the first revelation revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and contains the command to read (iqra’), which forms the cornerstone for the development of knowledge in Islam. This verse not only emphasises the importance of reading as a means of acquiring knowledge, but also highlights the close connection between the pursuit of knowledge and divine values. This study aims to analyse the interpretations of exegetes regarding the command to read in Surah Al-'Alaq, verse 1, to identify the educational values contained therein, and to explain its relevance to Islamic education. The command to read in Surah Al-'Alaq, verse 1, has a broad meaning; it is not limited to the act of reading texts but also encompasses efforts to understand, examine and study various phenomena of life as part of the process of seeking knowledge. This verse contains educational values that include literacy, intellectual development, spiritual nurturing, the strengthening of monotheistic awareness, and the encouragement of lifelong learning. The relevance of this verse to Islamic education is evident in the importance of strengthening a culture of literacy, the integration of knowledge and faith, the development of research-based learning, and the nurturing of learners who possess a balanced intellectual and spiritual intelligence. Thus, Surah Al-'Alaq, verse 1, can be understood as the conceptual foundation of Islamic education, which encourages the development of knowledge oriented towards divine and humanitarian values.

Abstract

The development of financial technology has introduced various digital transaction innovations, one of which is the pay later system. This system allows consumers to purchase goods or services first and pay at a later date. However, the implementation of pay later raises debates within the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh muamalah) due to the presence of additional charges, interest, and late payment penalties that potentially contain usury (riba). This study aims to analyze the legal status of the pay later system from the perspective of Islamic law and determine whether the practice is permissible ( mubah) or categorized as usury. This research employs a qualitative method with a normative-sharia approach through library research. The data sources include the Qur'an, Hadith, classical fiqh books, DSN-MUI fatwas, scientific journals, and literature related to Islamic economics and financial technology. The results indicate that the pay later system is permissible if it uses a transparent credit sale contract without interest and penalty-based charges. However, if there are additional payments due to delayed repayment or percentage-based interest, the practice falls under prohibited usury in Islam. Therefore, the use of the pay later system must comply with sharia principles to ensure lawful and fair transactions.

Abstract

Ablution (wudu) is one of the requirements for performing prayer, and holds a crucial place in Islamic teachings. It is not only understood as cleansing the body but also as a form of obedience to the commands of Allah SWT. In practice, students are still found to have failed to perform ablution according to Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), including in terms of sequence, completeness of ablution, and understanding of the pillars and sunnah of ablution. This problem indicates a discrepancy between the theory learned in fiqh lessons and the actual practice students engage in in their daily lives. This study aims to determine students' ablution practices, analyze their compliance based on observations of fiqh, and identify factors that contribute to errors in performing ablution. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, collecting data through direct observation and literature review of various fiqh journals and books. The results indicate that some students still make errors such as irregularity in the order of ablution, uneven distribution of air to certain body parts, and a lack of understanding of the pillars and sunnah. Furthermore, fiqh instruction, which focuses too much on theory without practice, is a major contributing factor to students' poor ablution skills. Therefore, more practical learning methods, through drilling and hands-on practice, are needed to enable students to understand and perform ablution correctly in accordance with Islamic law.

Abstract

Education is an essential process in developing the quality of human beings, not only in terms of intellectual aspects but also in moral and spiritual dimensions. In this context, the formation of students’ character becomes the primary focus of education, particularly within educational systems grounded in humanistic and religious values. Teachers, as central figures in the educational process, play a crucial role in shaping students’ moral character. This study aims to examine in detail the role of teachers in the development of students’ morality (akhlak), including their roles as educators, mentors, motivators, role models, and facilitators in the learning process. The method employed in this study is a literature review with a qualitative approach, involving the analysis of various sources such as books, academic journals, and relevant Islamic literature. The findings indicate that the development of students’ moral character cannot be separated from the active role of teachers in providing exemplary behavior, habituation, and reinforcement of moral values in daily activities. Teachers are not only responsible for delivering instructional content but also serve as real-life role models in their attitudes, behaviors, and interactions. Teacher exemplification has been proven to be the most significant factor in shaping students’ moral character, as students tend to imitate behaviors they directly observe.

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of the meaning of "al-ma’ṣiyyah" within the hadith commentary text "al-īmān yazīd wa yanquṣ, yazīd bi al-ṭō’ah wa yanquṣ bi al-ma’ṣiyyah" using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. Generally, the term "al-ma’ṣiyyah" is interpreted as the act of violating a command; in the context of Islamic studies, the command violated is specifically that of Allah. However, when "al-ma’ṣiyyah" is interpreted using a different approach—specifically Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory—its meaning undergoes a shift. This research employs a qualitative method, utilizing the Kutub al-Tis’ah and their commentaries (syarah) as the primary sources for the hadith, and the Collected Papers of Charles Sanders Peirce as the primary reference for the semiotic theory. The discussion in this study covers: 1) The commentary on the hadith regarding the fluctuation of faith; 2) The interpretation of the meaning of maksiat within the context of faith fluctuation; and 3) The hadith regarding the loss of one’s faith. The results indicate that: 1) The text "al-īmān yazīd wa yanquṣ, yazīd bi al-ṭō’ah wa yanquṣ bi al-ma’ṣiyyah" serves as a commentary on the hadith concerning the many branches of faith; 2) The meaning of maksiat in this commentary shifts from "violating a command" to "abandoning sunnah (recommended) acts"; and 3) The hadith regarding the loss of faith explains that a believer who commits adultery, becomes intoxicated, or steals is not considered to possess faith at the moment these acts are committed.
