Abstract

The conflict in Darfur broke out in 2003 which was accompanied by a series of crimes against humanity that threatened civilians in Darfur, in 2007 the UN passed a resolution containing a deployment of the UN's hybrid peacekeeping mission join forces with the African Union called UNAMID, which until 2017 UNAMID failed in carrying out its mission. This study aims to analyze the causes of Peacekeeping Operations failures in Darfur in the range of 2008-2017, this research uses Realism theory to explain the concept of state interests that are the cause of failure in Peacekeeping Operations in Darfur, the results of this study indicate UNAMID's failures caused by the UN's lack of political will and the lack of attention from UN Security Council member countries such as the US, UK, and France in imposing strict sanctions and policies on Sudan as perpetrators of humanitarian crimes in Darfur, the results also indicate the interests of other UNSC members as the reason of failure in UNAMID, namely Russia and China which support the government of Sudan and they often sabotaged the peace mission process in Darfur, which the UN does not take firm action against.

Abstract

The outbreak of COVID-19 has made China's image deteriorate into an unfavourable view. The government cannot waive this problem. Sectors such as but not limited to economics, anti-China sentiment, and the bullied Chinese diaspora has impacted. Therefore, China must have strategies that can restore its image internationally. Based on the background of the problem, the research question is how are China's strategies in restoring its country image due to the COVID-19 pandemic? To answer this question, the author uses the conceptual framework of Diamond and McDonald's Multi-Track Diplomacy. It then argues that China uses the strategies in the Multi-Track Diplomacy operating tracks one (government) and nine (media and communication) to restore its image. This study finds that China carries those strategies in tracks one and nine to recover their image by image building. The type of data used in this research is qualitative and analysed using narrative data analysis methods.

Abstract

After 9/11, the U.S. have been so adamant on eradicating terrorism all over the world, and adopted a foreign policy that focuses on counterterrorism named „war on terror‟. The war on terror have been targeting terrorist groups like al-Qaeda, and most recently, its foremost focus is on ISIL. While the U.S. promised to erase all terrorism in the world, the policy still has some imbalance towards whom it applies to. Towards ISIL, the U.S. and its coalition have made subsequent progress on their counterterrorism efforts while towards other groups, such as Boko Haram, the policy application has been stagnant with not much progress. This thesis is a qualitative research using Mill‟s Method of comparative study to see the differences of each policy and will explore and analyze the reasons why the counterterrorism effort of the U.S. is unequal, focusing on its differences of counterterrorism policy towards ISIL and Boko Haram using Analytical Eclecticism as a tool. Furthermore, this thesis will also incorporate defensive realism and liberal internationalism to analyze the possible reasons on why U.S.‟s counterterrorism policy has a difference between whom it applies to. The result of this study shows that U.S. have a political interest in Syria including its rivalry with Russia and its needs to contain Russia‟s power in the Middle East and its interest to topple Assad from the Syrian government.

Abstract

Violence against women is a form of discrimination against women and is regulated under the 1981 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Violence against women is a global issue. It also still occurs in developed countries such as Denmark. In fact, despite the remarkable achievements in the agenda of gender equality in the economic, political and social fields, the prevalence of violence that occurred in 2003 and 2014 was still high. As a binding instrument, CEDAW provides an obligation for the state to comply with and to implement concrete measures in the protection of women. Therefore, the author in this study sought to see how Denmark's compliance forms to fulfill its obligations in dealing with violence against women according to this Convention. This qualitative research uses compliance theory by paying attention to the dynamics and the challenges of handling  violence against women under the Convention. There are several findings in this study. First, although Denmark has implemented significant measures in dealing with violence against women, CEDAW has not been fully implemented by Denmark. Second, the increasing number of immigrants and the financial crisis have affected the success in protecting women. Third, the social and cultural conditions of the community have not completely changed. Therefore, Denmark can be categorized as a high compliance-low effectiveness country.
