Abstract

Traditional Biotechnology Content as a Media in Engaging Students with System Thinking Skills. A study about how to engage students with System Thinking Skills as part of 21st century skills into Traditional Biotechnology content was conducted using Science-Technology-Religion-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics approach through one group pretest-posttest design. The study involved 43 students from 5th semester in one University determined purposively. Data were collected through system thinking test and interview format. After being collected through instruments mentioned before, data were then processed using percentage criterion n-gain on test and analyzed the result of student’s interview. Research results show 60.47% of n-gain (moderate) with the best achievement is in the ability to explain the function of each component, while the weakest achievement is in the ability to analyze the energy cycle. The result of the interview shows that the students are able to follow the lecture stages due to the repetitive and continuous assignment. The constraints found are in managing assignments within lecture time and less explored on religion aspects. Thus, Traditional Biotechnology content can facilitate students on system thinking skills.

Abstract

Biointerpreneurship learning by using comics is one of the contextual learning and can train students' creativity and cognitive abilities. Therefore this study aims to determine the effectiveness of bioentrepreneurship learning using comics, by studying student creativity, students' cognitive abilities, and student responses. This research is a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental method of nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The instruments used for data collection include observation sheets, pre-test post-test, and student response questionnaires. The results showed that the creativity of the experimental class students was better than the control class, the cognitive abilities of the experimental class students improved better than the control class, and the responses of students in the experimental class were included in the strong criteria. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that learning bioenterprenership using comics effectively increase student creativity, students' cognitive abilities, and positive response from students

Abstract

Teaching materials are one part of learning tools that can help the teaching and learning process of both teachers and students. This study aims to determine the application of SETS-based science teaching materials to increase the scientific literacy skills of junior high school students. This study uses two classes as an experimental class. Treatment in the experimental class by giving SETS teaching materials with scientific literacy aspects and control classes using teaching materials used in daily teaching and learning activities. The learning process takes place at SMP N 01 Taman. The class is chosen as the control and experimental class with purposive sampling obtained from the mid-semester test scores. At the same time, the pretest-posttest method was used to determine whether the students' scientific literacy skills were good or not. The results of this study indicate that the application of SETS-based science materials with literacy aspects can significantly improve literacy skills. This can be seen from the calculation of N-Gain. Implementation of SETS-based science teaching materials can improve scientific literacy.

Abstract

The learning process with a module based on local wisdom is the alternative way on how to make students' ability for analyzing and identifying be stronger, especially in learning chemistry and also their motivation. Chemistry learning does not only focus on material content but on how students can interpret content scientifically so that they have a broad and deep range of knowledge. This research was quantitative. It aimed to know the level of students' cognitive and motivation in learning chemistry where they were using a specific module. In this case, the kibas asah integrated Augmented Reality-Sparkol has been used. The research method used experimental research with the type of one-shot case study. The data collecting technique was a questionnaire, and it included a cognitive test and motivation. The data analyzing method was a descriptive statistics approach. The result showed that the level of students’ cognitive through two tests in a different location. Its value was in a row of 0,77 and 0,70 with “high” criteria, and students’ motivation value was 77,61 with strong criteria. These results showed that chemical learning based on the module was developed, and it can fix the quality of the students’ cognitive and motivation deeply. That is, the concept of research is not oriented towards the product produced, but how the product has implications for learning chemistry holistically, becoming a source of scientific reference, honing skills in using technology, creativity, critical thinking, mental models, habituating scientific attitudes, and increasing their knowledge both in terms of chemical content or environmental based references (local wisdom).

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the intensity of using gadgets from the Integrated Science Department of Semarang State University with the e-learning platform during lectures. This study uses a descriptive method and tries to analyze how the use of gadgets in the classroom. The steps to obtain data in the field were carried out by interviewing and distributing questionnaires to 80 students. The intensity of gadget utilization by students in the Millennial Era is classified as frequently used with evidence of 92.5% of respondents stating that they often use gadgets in their daily lives. They use gadgets for social media and look for information related to lecturing materials. The use of gadget-based learning models can be used as a learning strategy to attract the attention of students. The e-learning platform that has been known by Integrated Science students of Semarang State University as the most prospective millennial generation educator is Edmodo.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the effectiveness of science learning media using focusky software on junior high school students’ High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS). Quasi-experiment is applied in pre-test – post-test non-equivalent control group design. The sampling technique applied wass cluster random sampling. Meanwhile, the instrument used was HOTS pre-test – post-test question. Data analysis techniques used were normality test, homogeneity test, Paired Sample T-test, Independent Sample T-test, and effect size. The result of this study indicates that the increase in HOTS of students in the experimental class was 50. It is higher than in the control class, which was only 30. The average post-test of the experimental class was 75.90, with 87% of students achieving the minimum criterion, while the average post-test of the control class was 60.25, with 75 % of students reach the minimum criterion. Based on the result of the Independent Sample T-test, it was shown that there were differences in HOTS abilities between the experimental class students and the control class students, and the effectiveness of the medium-sized learning media assisted by science learning media with an effect size of 0.7.

Abstract

One of the purposes of Genetic practicum is that students can understand DNA separation techniques, by conducting gel electrophoresis practicum. Some Institutions of Teacher Training (LPTK) have problems in gel electrophoresis practicum due to unavailability of the lab. For this reason, it is necessary to try a replacement practicum in the form of a virtual laboratory to meet practicum objectives. This research uses a design development research (DDR) approach, through six stages, namely 1) identifying problems by determining indicators of learning and supporting literature studies, 2) determining the purpose, 3) designing and developing devices by designing virtual laboratories, determining the software that will be used, compiling a virtual laboratory storyboard and expert validation, 4) testing, 5) evaluating the results of the trial, and 6) communicating the results of the trial. The validated device was tested on a limited basis on 38 student participants who took genetic practicum. Data on laboratory reports on virtual laboratory gel electrophoresis were analyzed descriptively based on the students' ability to understand gel electrophoresis. 95.89% of students have the ability to understand gel electrophoresis.

Abstract

There are indication that the implementation of education in various places in Indonesia is still not optimally empowering students' critical thinking skills (CTS). The aimed of this quantitative study was about 1) to survey the CTS of junior high school students in the Malang, and 2) to know whether or not there were differences in CTS between students in different grades. The measurement of CTS in this study used an integrated critical thinking assessment of the essay test. Mean score and one-way ANOVA were used as data analysis techniques. The results concluded that 1) students’ CTS in Malang were still low; and 2) there was no significant difference in the level of CTS between students of class VII, VIII, and IX.
