Abstract

This research explores how Pantene Indonesia challenges the perception that beauty products are exclusively for women through its advertising campaigns, particularly by featuring male influencers like Keanu Angelo in its promotions for the Pantene Miracle Hair Supplement. As Indonesia's beauty industry, especially hair care, continues to grow, Pantene has sought to redefine its brand image in response to competitive pressures and traditional beauty standards. Utilizing Stuart Hall's Reception Theory, qualitative interviews with five informants reveal diverse audience responses shaped by their social backgrounds and personal experiences. Findings indicate a spectrum of interpretations, including dominant, negotiated, and oppositional positions, with some informants exhibiting a dual negotiated-oppositional stance that acknowledges the ad's inclusive message while critiquing conflicting elements. These insights highlight the complexity of audience engagement with media messages and suggest that while Pantene's strategy has the potential to shift perceptions and challenge stereotypes, it must also incorporate broader representations and community outreach efforts to resonate authentically with evolving societal beauty standards.

Abstract

Journalism is a high-risk profession, often associated with men. Women who enter this field face numerous obstacles, particularly at the organizational level, which affects their career development opportunities. This study aims to understand the experiences of female journalists in achieving career equality in the mass media, both in performing their duties and in policies related to their career sustainability. The main theories and concepts used in this study are standpoint theory, liberal feminism, and gender organizational communication. This descriptive research employs a critical phenomenology design and a critical paradigm. The subjects of this study are six journalists from print, online, and television media, categorized as junior, mid-level, and senior journalists. The results of this study highlight significant challenges such as the double burden, gender stereotypes, labor exploitation through assignments outside their job description, and centralized management policies. In local media, centralized policy systems can hinder the careers of regional journalists, reducing their chances of advancing to managerial positions or gaining recognition for their contributions compared to their colleagues at headquarters. These challenges make it difficult for female journalists to sustain their careers, prompting efforts such as skill development, adaptation to the work environment, networking, and proving themselves through their work.

Abstract

The internet has become a business platform. In 2021, local brand Somethinc introduced its makeup products and carried out various promotions via TikTok social media. As a new entrant, Somethinc Makeup needs to increase its sales so that it can compete with other local brands. One of the marketing efforts they make is through live streaming on the TikTok application. This research aims to determine the influence of marketing communications via live streaming on TikTok on consumer purchasing decisions, with purchase interest as a mediator. This research uses the Elaboration Likelihood Model with non-probability sampling techniques. The sample consisted of 100 individuals aged 18-24 years who were TikTok users and followers of the @somethincmakeup account, had an interest in cosmetics, had purchased Somethinc cosmetic products, and had experience using Somethinc products. This consideration is based on the majority of TikTok users which are teenagers aged 18 - 24 years, and Somethinc's market segmentation demographic, namely women aged 15 and older. Hypothesis testing is carried out using Simple Linear Regression and Multiple Linear Regression by SPSS. Based on the research results, it was found; (1) first hypothesis: there is a positive and significant influence of marketing communications via live streaming on TikTok (X) on Purchase Decisions (Y) with a significant value of 0.000. (2) second hypothesis: the live streaming marketing communication variable on TikTok (X) has a positive and significant effect on Purchase Interest (M) with a significant value of 0.000, so that the better the marketing communication activities via live streaming on TikTok (X), the higher the purchase interest. (3) the third hypothesis is accepted where there is a positive and significant influence between marketing communications via live streaming on TikTok (X) on purchasing decisions (Y) which is partially mediated by Purchase Interest (M) with a significant value of 0.00.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to explain the experience of cross-cultural environment adaptation in international students and what makes international students able to overcome the crisis. The phenomenon of adaptation in a cross-cultural environment is an interesting phenomenon to study because cultural barriers are some of the things that most often cause international students to fail to complete their studies abroad. Many people who are in a new environment face culture shock, which is believed to be a normal condition. However, the level of disturbance experienced by the individual can differ from one person to another. This study uses two concepts, namely u-shaped curve and cross-cultural adaptation theories. The u-shaped curve concept has four stages of adaptation process namely honeymoon phase, crisis, recovery, and adjustment Moreover, the cross-cultural adaptation concept believes that individuals’ capacity for communicating in accordance with new cultural norms and values depends on their ability to change or adapt. It is made up of three crucial elements namely acculturation, deculturation, and assimilation. Each informant is able to be identified with a different process of cross cultural adaptation. There are three findings in this study. First, u-shaped curve theory may not prove for a number of adaptation processes in general. Second, international students undergo different processes of cross-cultural adaptation in cross-cultural environments. Third, what makes international students overcome the crisis include several strategies.

Abstract

Women often become victims of sexual objectification on social media or online. One of them is Nisa who is the host of the Kinderflix channel which brings educational content for toddlers. Even though Nisa wears a hijab and dresses modestly, she receives many harassing comments on the Kinderflix content she presents. This research aims to determine whether there is an influence between exposure to Kinderflix content and the credibility of host Nisa on the Kinderflix channel regarding the behavior of commenting on cyber sexual harassment of adult viewers on Kinderflix content. This research has an explanatory type and the theories used are uses & gratifications theory and source credibility theory. The research test uses a simple linear regression test with a non-probability sampling technique. The sample used in this research was 60 respondents with criteria aged 17-35 years, users of social media Instagram, Youtube and TikTok, and had been exposed to Kinderflix content. The results of this research show that exposure to Kinderflix content on cyber sexual harassment commenting behavior has a significant influence, so the hypothesis is accepted because the result value is 0.001 or smaller than 0.01. Exposure to Kinderflix content has an influence of .27.4% on cyber sexual harassment commenting behavior. Then, the results of host Nisa's credibility test regarding cyber sexual harassment commenting behavior are very significant or influential because the result value is 0.001 and is smaller than 0.01. Nisa's host credibility has an influence of 21.2% on cyber sexual harassment commenting behavior

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilandasi oleh adanya digitalisasi yang mempengaruhi distribusi informasi pada digital imigran, dimana hal ini menjadikan segala informasi lebih mudah diakses oleh para digital imigran. Terjadi kekerasan pada dua institusi pemerintahan yang kerapkali menjadi tujuan orang tua untuk menyekolahkan anaknya yang diberitakan secara publik dimana informasi ini dikonsumsi oleh para digital imigran. Penelitian ini akan menelaah bagaimana pengalaman para digital imigran dalam pencarian dan pengelolaan informasi mengenai kekerasan yang terjadi di lembaga Pendidikan PIP dan IPDN. Penelitian ini akan dilakukan dengan pendekatan fenomenologis dimana data yang digunakan akan didapatkan dengan wawancara mendalam terhadap informan. Subjek penelitian atau informan dalam penelitian ini adalah orang dewasa berusia 35tahun keatas yang berkaitan langsung dengan lembaga Pendidikan IPDN dan PIP. Analisis akan dilakukan dengan teori Teori Information Seeking Behavior, Teori Likelihood Elaboration Model, dan The Medium Theory. Temuan pada penelitian menujukkan bahwa para sebagain digital imigran mencari informasi secara aktif, dan sebagian lainnya mencari secara pasif, dan terdapat satu digital imigran yang tidak melakukan pencarian. Perilaku pencarian ini dipengaruhi oleh berbagai macam latar belakang masing-masing informan, mulai dari lingkungan, intrapersonal, dan demografi. Temuan selanjutnya yaitu bahwa secara general digital imigran yang melakukan pencarian pasif lambat dipengaruhi oleh informasi, dan yang melakukan pencarian aktif cepat dipengaruhi oleh informasi. Hasil yang didapatkan menunjukkan bahwa Perilaku pencarian yang ditemukan pada penelitian ini yaitu passive attention, passive search, active search. Pada informan satu didapatkan pola pencarian passive attention, pada informan dua didapatkan pola pencarian passive search, dan pada informan tiga dan empat didapatkan pola pencarian active search. Pola pengelolaan informasi yang didapatkan pada penelitian ini yaitu central route dan peripheral route.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the culture shock experienced by Indonesian students studying in Taiwan, related to differences in the education system between Taiwan and Indonesia. The selection of Taiwan for research was motivated by the high interest of Indonesian students to continue their education in Taiwan. The research focuses on the education system, including the teaching and learning process in class, group and individual assignments and exams, as well as internships and final projects. The purpose of this research is to understand the communication experiences of Indonesian students in overcoming culture shock in the education system in Taiwan. The research was conducted with an interpretive phenomenological approach and descriptive qualitative research method. The research used Self-Adjustment Theory and Identity Negotiation Theory. The data collection technique was carried out by literature study and in-depth interviews with six students from Indonesia class of 2020, who studied higher education at the undergraduate level in Taiwan. The results found that students need to take the initiative in initiating communication in learning activities and daily life, for example to get acquainted, ask questions, discuss, and get closer, this is because the communication culture in Taiwan tends to be individualistic. Students need to master the use of traditional Mandarin to support the communication process to overcome culture shock, as the main language used by Taiwanese people. Indonesian students need to approach themselves to live in groups in order to communicate and exchange ideas, especially with fellow Indonesian students, but Indonesian students can also avoid communication, in order to take a break from the pressure of educational culture shock, before finally returning to a condition that is ready to communicate.

Abstract

This interpretive qualitative research has aim to understand the speech code and logic of tolerance in conservative community. Based on the Ethnography of Communication, data is collected through WhatsApp groupchat and interview which later analysed with The Speech Code Theory (Gerry Philipsen) that resulting codes of tolerance that then elaborated using Social Identity Theory (Tajfel&Turner) in generating codes. The result of this research is: first, Code of Honor and Dignity. This code creates logic of Victim Perspective, namely the feeling of the ingroup as victims of getting pitted against each other by the outgroup which is based on the concept of Aqidah and Morals that the ingroup believed in. Second, the dominant code referring to Code of Outgroup namely act of excluding outgroup due to differences of perspective from each religion. This code also arises in fellow Muslim that has different ways in interpreting Islam. The logic appears due to protecting fellow Muslim from influence of the non-Muslim where later represent the existence of stratification among Muslim. Third, Phrases for Moral Judgments and codes of Prejudice emerging logic of moral and prejudice. This logic refers to direct judgments for outgroup based on moral superiority feeling of ingroup with the purpose of revealing the true face of Islam based on Quran and Hadist, where later arises group identity as the true believer of Islam. Those identity arises due to the urge of improving the face of Islam that perceived as old fashioned, radical, or even terrorist. However, code of non-verbal also arises in the chatgroup as a complimentary during conversation.

Abstract

The existence of sexual assault on public transportation is proof that security in public spaces has not been fully realized, especially for women who tend to be victims. Transjakarta, one of the public transportation companies in DKI Jakarta, is holding a Stop Sexual Harassment Campaign to create a safe space involving passenger participation. Peer group communication is one of the factors that can influence female passengers to have a firm attitude in dealing with sexual harassment in Transjakarta. This research aims to determine the influence of exposure to the stop sexual harassment campaign in Transjakarta and the intensity of peer group communication from the Busway Fan Club community in shaping the attitudes of female passengers facing acts of sexual harassment in Transjakarta. This research uses purposive sampling with a total of 100 respondents. The theories used in this research are Cognitive Response Theory and Reference Group Theory. Testing uses simple linear regression analysis. The findings show that there is an influence from exposure to the stop sexual harassment campaign and the intensity of peer communication from groups from the Busway Fan Club (BFC) community on the attitudes of female passengers in facing acts of sexual harassment in Transjakarta. These findings show that cognitively, affectively, and conatively, female passengers tend to act assertively if they see or become victims of sexual harassment in Transjakarta.

Abstract

This research describes the situation of sexual education in Indonesia, where "sex" is still considered taboo and there are many misconceptions about sexuality. Parents, schools, and mass media still provide inadequate information, leading adolescents to seek information from social media platforms like Instagram. In this context, the Instagram account @tabu.id plays a significant role in providing comprehensive sexual education and reproductive health. This study explores the narratives presented by @tabu.id in its sexual education content and the culture reflected through Instagram users' responses to that content. The research employs an interpretive paradigm with theories of Computer Mediated Communication and New Media. A qualitative approach using the netnography method is utilized to analyze 20 posts from @tabu.id with the highest likes and comments from January 2022 to September 2023. The findings reveal 5 categories in the Sexual Education and Reproductive content uploaded by Tabu.id: Sexual Orientation and Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Relationships, Sexual Activities, and Sexual Violence. Tabu.id has facilitated significant open discussions about sexual education and reproduction on its Instagram account. Through discussions in the comment section, netizens exchange experiences and information, reflecting openness, inclusivity, and courage to discuss issues of sexual education, highlighting the importance of social media in voicing opinions on taboo and sensitive issues like sexual education and reproduction.
