Abstract

This study explores the power dynamics of rural housewives who also work as farm laborers. The main focus of the study is to understand their autonomy and decisionmaking position within the household context. Using a qualitative approach, this research involved in-depth interviews and participant observation of a number of housewives in rural areas. The key findings reveal that these housewives generally lack significant personal autonomy within their households. This is largely due to their limited understanding of gender equality concepts and their right to participate in household decision-making. As a result, they tend to choose passivity and submission to their husbands' authority. This study highlights the importance of education on gender equality and women's empowerment in rural areas. The implications of these findings indicate a need for programs that can increase awareness and understanding among housewives about their rights, as well as encourage more active participation in household decision-making.

Abstract

The world of Hollywood films often presents Muslim identity as a secondary group related to acts of terrorism. This is due to several events in the past such as the events of September 9 2001. Since then Muslims have received a lot of discrimination from American society and are seen as a cruel and violent identity. After 21 years have passed, a superhero series by Marvel has emerged, namely Ms. Marvel. This series is a bold breakthrough from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) because it promotes Muslim identity as the main character. The aim of this research is to find out how Muslims are represented in the Ms. Marvel. This research uses qualitative research methods with a constructivism paradigm. The theory used in this series is Identity Negotiation Theory proposed by Stella Ting-Tomey using John Fiske's semiotic analysis method. The results of this research show that Muslim identity is displayed positively but still only partially. Positive Muslims can be seen through the depiction of Muslims as an identity that is equal to other cultural identities. This equality can be seen through various aspects such as camera angles that use eye level angles, the appointment of Muslims as main characters, and the friendship between Kamala and Bruno. Apart from that, positive Muslims are also depicted through aspects of the characterization of Muslim characters that seem humorous, dialogue that is not related to terrorism, as well as other aspects such as worship gestures that reflect a religious nature. However, unfortunately this depiction is still partial because Kamala's character is depicted as not wearing a hijab. The hijab is a mandatory attribute for a Muslim woman, but in this series, Kamala is shown wearing the hijab in only a few scenes. Suggestions for further research are to examine how Muslim identity is linked to other American minority identities such as Jews, blacks, Asians and others, using other semiotic analysis methods such as Umberto Eco or Roland Barthes.

Abstract

Cosplaying involves individuals imitating characters from comics, anime, and games. To this day, the comic, anime, and gaming communities are known to be male-dominated, which often subjects female cosplayers to various threats, including the threat of sexual harassment. These threats are experienced by female cosplayers everywhere, including on social media platforms like Instagram. This study aims to explore the essence of female cosplayers' experiences in dealing with sexual harassment on Instagram. The primary theories and concepts used in this study are the muted group theory, radical feminism, and mass communication. This is a descriptive study employing a critical phenomenology design and a critical paradigm. The research subjects are five active female cosplayers who use Instagram as a platform to publicize their cosplay activities. The results of this study highlight only a subset of female cosplayers is courageous enough to resist, with the decision to resist largely influenced by their past experiences and social interactions. Increased experience and interaction with fellow female cosplayers appear to correlate with greater confidence in resisting harassment. Conversely, limited interaction tends to leave individuals more susceptible to the influence of threats and the silencing they often endure. Female cosplayers' responses to sexual harassment are categorized into three types: direct resistance, indirect resistance, and non-resistance. The majority of participants tend to adopt indirect or non-resistant approaches, indicating that silencing is indeed prevalent, with many respondents impacted by this phenomenon. The silencing they experience encompasses not only sexual harassment but also stereotyping and emotional manipulation. Furthermore, the study underscores the significant role social media plays in perpetuating sexual harassment, as anonymity emboldens perpetrators and complicates the process of identifying them

Abstract

The dissemination of values brought by films as mass media can influence society in constructing ideologies. In media ecology theory, media are considered more than just channels for message transmission; the inherent nature of the medium can be key to a social impact. This includes how various gender aspects regarding the portrayal of women's roles in films can affect societal perspectives and ideologies. "Kartini" (2017) is a biopic depicting the life journey of R.A. Kartini, a national female figure originating from Java who pioneered the women's emancipation movement in Indonesia. This research examines how the representation of women's emancipation is depicted through symbols in the film "Kartini" (2017) and how gender relations occur in feudal Java. This study employs qualitative descriptive research focusing on how Javanese culture can influence gender relations and power dynamics. Representation is conducted using John Fiske's semiotic analysis method, The Codes of Television, which examines the unit of analysis through three levels of social codes: reality, representation, and ideology. The research findings reveal that the representation of women's emancipation struggle in the film "Kartini" (2017) depicts women's roles as agents of resistance, challenging cultural norms and patriarchal ideologies that limit women's mobility within the entrenched patriarchy of Javanese culture. Patriarchy, through Javanese cultural traditions and values, legitimizes the subordination of women, thus necessitating emancipation movements to achieve physical, intellectual, and social liberation as a form of resistance against patriarchal hegemony. The representation of women's emancipation in the film "Kartini" (2017) illustrates how contradictions and negotiations are undertaken by women to drive social change and achieve gender equality.

Abstract

This study was conducted to understand the interpretation of millennial parents in Semarang City regarding gender performativity in the film "Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku." Gender performativity based on Judith Butler's perspective views gender as non-binary, where individuals may enact their gender differently over time based on their experiences and contexts. This qualitative descriptive research used Stuart Hall's reception analysis method to discover the audience's reception towards gender performativity in “Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku” and John Fiske's semiotic analysis to identify the preferred readings offered by "Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku”. The result revealed that (1) Tolerance towards gender diversity can be accepted by the public to achieve gender inclusivity. (2) Audiences encountered certain limitations in accepting gender performativity due to conflict with their cultural and religious beliefs (3) There is a correlation between the individuals’ background and their acceptance towards gender performativity. The research findings indicate that the audiences' backgrounds shape their receptions towards media (film).

Abstract

The childfree phenomenon in Indonesia, although still considered taboo, is increasingly being discussed, especially on social media. Data from the Central Statistics Agency shows a 2.1% decline in the marriage rate, which was 1.74 million marriages, to 1.7 million in 2022. In addition, the birth rate has also experienced a significant decline of 30.64% in the last three decades. This decline is thought to be due to various social, economic, and cultural factors, including changes in views on the family and the role of women. The childfree phenomenon has sparked heated debate over traditional values that place children as an essential part of the family and women's identity. This study examines how audiences respond to the childfree narrative in the YouTube video "Semua Hal Itu Egois" on the Menjadi Manusia channel using the Netnography and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approaches. The results of the study show a strong division of opinion. The pro-childfree group supports this choice as an expression of personal freedom and a form of rejection of traditional gender roles. Meanwhile, 1 the opposing group emphasizes patriarchal and religious values that consider the role of mother as a natural obligation for women. This debate illustrates a complex social dynamic, in which the childfree choice reflects the tension between individual freedom and strong cultural pressures to have a family in Indonesia. These differing interpretations highlight how deeply rooted traditional values are in Indonesian society.

Abstract

In remarried families, with regard to communication, most research states that the level of conflict and negative communication that occurs tends to be caused by stepparents when there are stepchildren, especially teenage girls. Teenage girls and stepfathers often experience difficulties or face obstacles when interacting and often avoid or distance themselves from each other due to different factors. However, even so, teenage girls who achieve a close relationship with their stepfather also appear, although minimally. This research aims to understand the communication narrative of relationship development between teenage girls and stepfathers. A total of three teenage female sources aged 19-21 years were interviewed to explore the process of developing their relationship from the first meeting to living with their stepfather. This research uses the Todorov narrative analysis method which has been modified by Nick Lacey and Gillespie. The research results show that there are three forms of relationships based on the experiences of teenage girls. The relationship developed without closeness due to initial rejection, attachment to his biological father, and a foreign perception towards his stepfather that could not be minimized. The relationship can achieve bonding because the stepfather seeks maximum self-disclosure interaction and persuasion and accommodates the child's ego from the start. Relationships without fulfilling emotional needs because of children's expectations of a father figure who can be a place for stories and a place to open up. Even so, communication plays a role in every process of developing a teenage girl's relationship with her stepfather, from the initial approach, supporting adjustment, to a more stable and flexible relationship after living together.

Abstract

This field project discusses the entire preparation and execution of the Trackpresso: 5K Color Run 2024 event. Anak Panah Kopi, as the client, collaborated with the project team, motivated by the desire to create an event that has been trending in recent months, using the 'riding the wave' strategy as the basis for conducting this project. This report utilizes Integrated Marketing Communication as the conceptual framework, applying eight tools, and event management principles as outlined in Joe Goldblatt's book "Special Events" which explains the execution of events through five stages, from research to evaluation. The Trackpresso: 5K Color Run targeted an audience of 150 participants and was held on August 24th in Semarang. The results of this report show that the event was successfully executed according to the initial target, with 150 participants joining the Trackpresso: 5K Color Run. As the Program Manager, the main person responsible for the project, I successfully managed the project and the entire team, effectively utilizing resources to ensure the smooth execution of the event. Additionally, in the roles of Production Lead, Event PIC, and Liaison Officer, I achieved the predetermined targets: overseeing procurement, designing and organizing an e-sports competition, and negotiating with event performers and other collaborators. Therefore, this report recommends that the Trackpresso: 5K Color Run project can provide academic contributions to the preparation of similar events in the future.

Abstract

Liong Hok Bio Temple in Magelang is a place of worship and cultural activity center that plays a crucial role in fostering tolerance and intercultural relationships. The Cap Go Meh cultural parade symbolizes tolerance, reduces antiChinese sentiment, and enhances intercultural tolerance in Magelang City. Although challenges of multiculturalism have lessened, effective communication strategies are still necessary to maintain tolerance. This study aims to analyze the communication strategies employed by TITD Liong Hok Bio Temple in the Cap Go Meh Cultural Parade in Magelang. A descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach was used, utilizing the Communication Accommodation Theory. The communication strategies used by the temple are divided into four parts: problem identification, goal setting, communication strategy formulation (communicators, target audience, messages, media, communication effects), and evaluation, which is split into summative and formative evaluations to assess success, identify obstacles, and provide suggestions for improving the quality of the Cap Go Meh Cultural Parade in the future. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The results indicate that Liong Hok Bio Temple has effectively implemented communication strategies in the Cap Go Meh celebration. These include convergence strategies that integrate traditional culture with Chinese cultural elements to reduce potential conflicts and enhance tolerance, and divergence strategies aimed at highlighting Chinese cultural heritage and strengthening the spiritual bonds of the Liong Hok Bio Temple congregation. Although both strategies are used, the implementation predominantly features convergence strategies. The cultural parade has had a positive communication effect on increasing the knowledge and attitudes of the Magelang community 2 towards Chinese culture, as well as the potential for behavioral changes in appreciating cultural diversity
