Abstract

This study aims to identify and explain the relationship between exposure to information on digital ethics and digital competence on social media behavior. The method used is a quantitative explanatory approach with a population of individuals participating in the "Indonesia Makin Cakap Digital" program through event.literasidigital.id and who are social media users. The results indicate that exposure to information on digital ethics and social media behavior have a significant relationship, with a very weak and positive correlation. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that exposure to information on digital ethics is a more important factor influencing social media behavior compared to digital competence. Therefore, Indonesia needs to implement digital ethics development programs to enhance positive behavior on social media.

Abstract

Superheroes are a type of popular culture are related with Great Depression in Unaited State. Superheroes represent people's hopes and dreams in solving their problems. Today's superhero movies not only focus on commercial needs but they also bring social issues into their stories. Gundala, a film directed by Joko Anwar which was released in 2019 based on the comic character written by Hasmi. Joko Anwar made adjustments in this movie and included current social issues as a form of freedom of speech that could not be done openly at the time the Gundala comic was made. Resistance as a form of social movement is carried out by society to make social changes that affect their lives. This research aims to determine resistance of oligarchy as represented in the Gundala (2019) movie and the forms of resistance carried out by society against oligarchy. Using deprivation theory as a theory of social movements in order to create social change. This qualitative research is using John Fiske's semiotic analysis method to analyse scenes that represent resistance of oligarchy in Gundala. The results of this research found that oligarchy is described as great strength and power that is difficult to fight alone. Resistance was carried out by people from various social classes as an illustration of oligarchy power that affected all levels of society. Resistance is dominated by group resistance because of the difference in power between society and oligarchy. People who resist individually tend to show their resistance behind their backs because direct individual resistance is considered to be dangerous to them. Therefore, people group together to fight back in order to have power equal to oligarchy. Gundala represent people’s hope to take the oligarchy down.

Abstract

Gender inequality and patriarchal domination remain significant issues in Indonesia, including in the Minangkabau society, which follows a matrilineal kinship system. Despite the important role of women in Minangkabau's social structure, patriarchy still prevails, creating disparities between men and women. The Musikal Nurbaya (2021) series highlights this issue through its female protagonist who faces patriarchal pressure. This study aims to analyze the forms of resistance exhibited by the main female character against patriarchal domination in the series. Using hermeneutic analysis, the study explores 13 scenes and 3 songs in the series to understand how gender injustice is critiqued and confronted by the main character. The results show that the character Nur demonstrates both open and covert resistance to patriarchal domination, reflected in her rejection of traditional gender norms and her fight for individual freedom. The series also reveals that despite Minangkabau's matrilineal system, patriarchal domination continues to affect women's lives. In conclusion, Nur's resistance reflects a broader struggle to achieve gender equality amid patriarchal norms.

Abstract

Football communities are predominantly male and hegemonically masculine, often subjecting female fans to stereotypes and unpleasant treatment. Despite this, many women actively engage in football fandom and community activities. This research explores how women negotiate their identity while participating in these male-dominated spaces. Four informants from two football clubs were interviewed using dialogic narrative analysis based on Labov's narrative stages model. Identity negotiation, performance, and management theories were applied to understand their experiences The findings reveal that male dominance and masculine hegemony persist, making identity negotiation inevitable. However, growing gender equality discussions have led to greater acceptance of female fans. Today, female fans are more likely to be valued and integrated with male fans. The identity negotiation process varies, influenced by individual experiences. Some women choose to ignore or normalize the negative behaviors of male fans, while others perform certain behaviors to balance group expectations with their personal identity. These performances include maintaining a positive image with parents, actively engaging in fan activities, and mimicking typically masculine behaviors, like showing toughness. Family support or rejection also plays a crucial role in shaping women's continued involvement in football fandom.

Abstract

Indonesian people are known for their high interest in consuming horror content through various media platforms, including films, true stories, horror literature, and podcasts. According to a 2023 Jakpat survey, interest in horror content among Indonesians stands at 50%. Spotify has leveraged this interest in its communication strategy by employing a fear appeal in advertisements with a unique approach. However, these ads do not consistently translate into purchases and have generated negative feedback on social media. This study investigates how users perceive these horror podcast advertisements. In-depth interviews were conducted with five Spotify users who had listened to horror podcast ads within the past three months. The study aims to identify social, individual, and situational factors influencing the reception offear appeal ads. Findingsreveal a diverse range of userresponses shaped by these factors. Comparative analysis with preferred readings of podcast ads highlights users' reception positions, with many occupying the Negotiated-Oppositional position. This study underscores users' ability to articulate varied responses influenced by social, individual, and situational dynamics, thus illustrating the limited efficacy of Spotify's fear appeal strategy. Recommendations include personalizing ads according to user preferences to enhance effectiveness.

Abstract

The differences in distance and limitations in physical interaction experienced by couples in long-distance relationships (LDR) encourage individuals to adjust their communication patterns, emotions, and relationship maintenance strategies to achieve the desired level of closeness. Changes in the dynamics of long-distance relationships can affect the intensity of interaction and emotional closeness, which may lead to miscommunication and conflict. This research aims to understand the relationship maintenance strategies implemented by individuals in long-distance relationships, including the maintenance of the relationship, changes in communication patterns, conflicts or tensions that arise, and the resolution strategies applied. The theories used in this study are the Triangular Theory of Love, Relationship Maintenance Theory, and Relational Dialectics Theory. This research employs an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach, using in-depth interviews as the data collection technique conducted with five individuals. The results of this research show that communication adjustments in relationship maintenance are carried out by individuals from the moment they begin a long-distance relationship with their partner. Each individual accommodates their partner's communication needs by utilizing various communication technologies, such as text messages, phone calls, and video calls in their daily interactions. Despite facing challenges related to physical distance and limited face-to-face interaction, individuals strive to maintain their relationship through intensive communication and efforts to sustain emotional intimacy. Each couple in an LDR applies relationship maintenance behaviors to achieve the desired ideal state, prevent conflicts, and maintain commitment within the relationship. Physical distance is not the main cause of conflict but often leads to minor miscommunications and tensions that need to be managed. Conflict resolution in LDRs is carried out through various strategies, such as compromise, increasing communication frequency, and maintaining emotional intimacy through virtual interactions.

Abstract

This study delves into the intercultural communication competence of Indonesian students participating in the Exchange Student Program at the University of Pécs. It examines how they navigate the substantial cultural differences between Hungary and Indonesia, employing Byram's (1997) five elements of intercultural communication competence—attitude, knowledge, skills of interpreting and relating, skills of discovery and interaction, and critical cultural awareness/political education—and intergroup contact theory to explore potential prejudice. The findings reveal that despite facing significant cultural challenges, the students demonstrate and substantially enhance their intercultural communication competence. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, the intellectual perspectives of each student in navigating cultural differences enrich the study, contributing to a deeper understanding of their intercultural experiences and offering insights into broader cultural adaptation in educational exchange programs. All Indonesian students in this study exhibit their intercultural communication competence.
