Abstract

The development of social media has transformed information consumption patterns and consumer behavior, including the phenomenon of thrift fashion purchasing among Generation Z. TikTok has become one of the most widely used platforms for accessing information related to thrift products, while communication within peer groups may also influence individuals’ purchasing decisions. This study aims to examine the influence of the intensity of accessing thrifting content on TikTok and peer group communication on thrift fashion buying intention among Generation Z in Indonesia. The study employs the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) as its theoretical framework. This research uses an explanatory research design with a quantitative approach. The population consists of Generation Z TikTok users in Indonesia, with a sample of 114 respondents selected through cluster sampling. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression with SPSS software. The findings indicate that, simultaneously, the intensity of accessing thrifting content on TikTok and peer group communication significantly influence thrift fashion buying intention, with a coefficient of determination of 37.2%. Partially, the intensity of accessing thrifting content on TikTok has a positive and significant effect on thrift fashion buying intention, with a significance value of 0.010 (<0.05), while peer group communication does not have a significant effect, with a significance value of 0.531 (>0.05). The study concludes that the intensity of accessing thrifting content on TikTok plays a more dominant role in shaping thrift fashion buying intention among Generation Z than peer group communication.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the rising popularity of thrift shopping among Generation Z on social media. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), this quantitative study examines the influence of electronic word of mouth (eWOM), attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control on thrift shopping intention, alongside the mediating role of attitude. Data were collected from 170 respondents in Jabodetabek using convenience sampling and analysed via PLS-SEM. The findings indicate that all proposed relationships are positive and significant. eWOM significantly influences attitude, which successfully mediates the link between eWOM and shopping intention. Among TPB constructs, perceived behavioural control exerts the strongest effect, suggesting Gen Z shops more when feeling capable and confident. Conversely, subjective norm shows the weakest effect. Consequently, thrift businesses should strengthen consumer confidence and encourage positive eWOM through engaging social media content.

Abstract

Cases of Non-Consensual Dissemination of Intimate Images (NCII) have continued to occur in recent years and remain common form of secxual violence in the digital sphere. A series of cases have docimented similar patterns of control and threats, leading to psychological trauma, negative judgements, and difficulties in social interaction. Unlike previous studies, which focused primarily on legal and psychological perspectives or addressed sexual violence in general, this study specifically approaches the issue from communication perspective and focuses on the context of NCII within romantic relationship. This is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interview with a NCII survivor. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’s transcendental method. The result indicates that self-disclosure occurs gradually through considerations of safety, trust, and partner response. Informan Dts selectively manage communication by adjusting the content, timing, and depth of information to reduce the risk of negative judgment and rejection. Face-to-face communication is the preferred form of disclosure because it allows informan Dts to directly observe their partners' responses. Traumatic experiences do not prevent informan Dts from establishing new romantic relationships, but rather form more selective relationships based on safety, trust, acceptance, and privacy management.

Abstract

The increasing competition in the culinary industry encourages Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to implement effective communication strategies to improve brand awareness and brand engagement. Mami Ayam Pop, a culinary MSME in Semarang, experienced low brand recognition, as indicated by 76.7% of respondents who were unfamiliar with the brand and 81.2% who did not recognize its positioning as a specialty Ayam Pop restaurant. This study aimed to increase Mami Ayam Pop's brand awareness from 23.3% to 68.5% and enhance brand engagement through the Flavor and Tunes Pop campaign, which integrated Instagram and TikTok social media, collaborations with micro-influencers, and brand activation programs, including Vote Your Iftar Flavor, Ramadhan Satnight Tunes, and POP Bite Reaction. During the campaign, the Project Manager was responsible for campaign planning, coordination, and evaluation, while the Finance Manager managed budgeting, financial administration, and sales performance evaluation. This study employed the AISAS (Attention, Interest, Search, Action, Share) model using a descriptive quantitative approach. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test surveys involving 202 respondents, observations, documentation, and social media performance analysis. The findings indicate improvements in brand awareness, social media reach and engagement, consumer participation, and sales performance. These results demonstrate that the Flavor and Tunes Pop campaign effectively enhanced brand visibility, strengthened Mami Ayam Pop's positioning as a specialty Ayam Pop restaurant, and increased consumer engagement.

Abstract

Freedom of expression has made TikTok a space where users can share their feelings, opinions, and daily activities without hesitation. However, this creative freedom may also trigger excessive self-disclosure, which can potentially endanger users themselves. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of TikTok social media usage intensity on women’s self-disclosure in beauty content and to identify the influence of peer communication intensity on women’s self-disclosure in beauty content. This study employs a quantitative method with an explanatory approach. The population consists of 2,799 students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Diponegoro University, Semarang, with a sample size of 100 students. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression, coefficient of determination, F test, and t-test. The results indicate that TikTok social media usage intensity and peer communication intensity have a positive and significant influence on self-disclosure. The coefficient of determination (adjusted R square) is 0.793, meaning that both independent variables explain 79.3% of women’s self-disclosure in beauty content

Abstract

This study is grounded in the growing phenomenon of alternative Instagram accounts—private secondary accounts used as a more personal space for self-expression—which have become increasingly common among Generation Z university students yet remain underexplored from a psychological perspective. A mixed methods approach was employed with emphasis on qualitative inquiry, combining a preliminary survey of 35 Communication Science students at Diponegoro University (class of 2022) with in-depth interviews involving 5 selected informants. Data were analyzed through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding stages. Drawing on Rosenberg's (1965) theory of self-esteem and Jourard's concept of self-disclosure, this study aims to understand the role of self-esteem in students' self-disclosure on alternative Instagram accounts. The findings reveal that self-esteem operates not as a static variable but as a contextual and audience-responsive condition. On primary accounts with broad and heterogeneous audiences, informants' self-esteem was more vulnerable due to fear of social judgment, resulting in more controlled, defensive, and curated self-expression; several informants admitted to having deleted posts after publishing them. On alternative accounts, where audiences had been carefully filtered and consisted primarily of trusted close contacts, self-esteem was more stable, enabling freer, more spontaneous, and more authentic self disclosure. Fear of judgment served as a limiting factor on primary accounts, while the sense of safety from a trusted audience functioned as a catalyst for openness on alternative accounts. Social support in the form of likes, story replies, and appreciation from followers strengthened informants' self-esteem, which in turn encouraged greater self-disclosure. This pattern forms a mutually reinforcing dynamic: stable self-esteem drives self-disclosure; positive responses generate social validation; and social validation further strengthens self-esteem. This study affirms that self-esteem functions as a psychological factor that comprehensively shapes students' self-disclosure patterns and that the creation of alternative accounts represents a deliberate psychological adaptive strategy by Generation Z students.

Abstract

Films can construct gender roles in society by conveying them through their characters. The film "The 355 (2022) depicts characters with masculine traits: tough, physically strong, intelligent, and independent of men. Based on this context, this study aims to analyze the representation of female masculinity in the film The 355 (2022). This study uses representation theory as the primary theory, supplemented by elements of masculinity as outlined by Peter Lehmann, traits as outlined by Meehan, and Judith Halberstam's theory of masculinity. The analytical method employed is Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis, with three levels of coding: denotation, connotation (with five reading codes), and myth. Overall, the masculinity that appears in the film The 355 in female characters is characterized by the presence of things that are understood by society as "masculine" by showing scenes that contain visual and verbal symbols that are constructed in nature, attitudes, responses, and reactions that contain elements of power, courage, heroism, and leadership and have dominant, independent, rational, assertive, analytical, brave, active, and insensitive characteristics. The formation of masculinity is also influenced by the experiences of each character in facing differences in power relations in organizations and societies that adhere to patriarchal ideology. The film The 355 also seems to try to deconstruct the myth that women are subordinate and present a counter ideology, namely feminist ideology, especially liberal feminism.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of Subscription Video-on-Demand (SVoD) platforms alters entertainment consumption patterns throughout Indonesia. Digital piracy remains deeply widespread despite the extensive availability of official streaming channels. This quantitative explanatory study inspects how perceived economic benefits, subjective norms, and moral obligations dictate individual intentions regarding SVoD product piracy. An online questionnaire gathered data from 246 qualified respondents before evaluation via Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Empirical results demonstrate that perceived economic advantages exert no significant influence on piracy intentions (? = 0.480; ? = −0.003). Subjective norms directly stimulate unauthorized downloading inclinations with a positive significant impact (? = 0.012; ? = 0.142). Moral obligation generates an unexpected positive significant path coefficient opposing the original hypothesis (? = 0.000; ? = 0.638). Piracy tendencies depend heavily upon peer dynamics and localized ethical rationalizations rather than direct cost considerations.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of Attitude Towards Plastic Waste, Subjective Norms Towards Plastic Waste, and Perceived Behavioral Control Towards Plastic Waste on Generation Z's intention to reduce online shopping activities using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). A quantitative approach with cross-sectional survey design involved 250 Generation Z respondents in Indonesia selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using PLS-SEM with SmartPLS 4. Findings indicate that Attitude (β = 0.653; P = 0.000) and Subjective Norms (β = 0.206; P = 0.000) positively and significantly influence intention, while Perceived Behavioral Control (β = 0.057; P = 0.205) does not. The model explains 66.5% of the variance in intention (R² = 0.665).

Abstract

Mental health stigma is one of the social issues found in society. Stigma is formed through prejudice, stereotypes, rejection, and discrimination experienced by individuals within their social environment. The Korean drama Daily Dose of Sunshine is an audiovisual medium that serves as a platform for representing mental health issues to the public. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach within an interpretive paradigm and utilized John Fiske’s semiotic analysis, which consists of the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. The research data were obtained through observations of dialogues, scenes, and interactions among characters that represent mental health stigma in the drama Daily Dose of Sunshine. The findings reveal that the representation of mental health stigma in the drama is portrayed through various forms of fear and prejudice, labeling and stereotyping, as well as rejection and discrimination toward individuals experiencing mental disorders or those with a history of mental illness. These representations are constructed through dialogues, scenes, and interactions among characters that reflect society’s negative perceptions of mental health issues.
