Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of Arab family values in Kamil Kaylani's short story As-Sinjabu As-Shoghir through Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism approach. This short story was chosen because it contains ideological tensions between traditional Arab values and the dynamics of modernity in the early 20th century. The analysis was conducted to reveal the dialectical relationship between narrative structure and social structure through the concept of human facts as a form of meaningful action in a social context. The method used was qualitative-descriptive with literary text analysis focusing on intrinsic elements and the configuration of human facts. The results of the study show that this short story represents the Arab patriarchal system as a fundamental fait social, with the father figure occupying the center of moral and social authority. The main values reproduced include ṭā‘ah (obedience) as the highest virtue, collective responsibility, patriarchal authority, female honor as a symbol of family morality, and the construction of knowledge as a threat to women. The text also displays ideological contradictions, particularly between isolation and protection and between women's moral ideals and their limited social space. These contradictions reflect the limited awareness of the modern Arab middle class, which seeks to preserve tradition while negotiating with modern values. Theoretically, this study confirms the function of children's literature as a medium for the reproduction of social ideology during the historical transition phase of Arab society. Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of oral tradition in the closing of prayer activities at the Al-Yahdi Klambir V Foundation in Medan through an anthropological-linguistic perspective. The focus of the study is on the use of Shalawat Pembuka Pintu Rezeki (Prayer for Opening the Door to Sustenance) as the closing of the yasinan ritual, which is a unique linguistic and cultural phenomenon. The research uses a qualitative approach with an anthropological ethnographic design through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The analysis was conducted by looking at the relationship between language form, cultural context, social function, and symbolic meaning in the practice of oral tradition. The results of the study show that the recitation of Shalawat not only functions as a religious expression but also as a medium for conveying cultural values that strengthen group identity, solidarity, and continuity of tradition. Linguistically, the repetition, intonation, language formulas, and performativity in Shalawat are markers of local wisdom and living cultural expressions. This study confirms that oral traditions in religious rituals are a form of cultural practice that is passed down through language and performance. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between mother tongue dominance and the language attitudes of IPB students in the 62nd batch. The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of language shift and maintenance in a multicultural university environment where students are faced with the demands of using regional languages, national languages, and global languages. The research method used was quantitative with a cross-sectional survey approach. Data collection instruments included a mother tongue dominance questionnaire adapted from the Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) and a language attitude scale based on cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions adapted from Baker (1992). The data were analyzed using SPSS 27 through validity and reliability tests, descriptive statistical analysis, normality tests, and Pearson's correlation test. The results showed a positive and significant relationship between mother tongue dominance and students' language attitudes, with a correlation coefficient of 0.213 and a significance of 0.009 (< 0.05). Although the strength was relatively weak, this finding confirmed that the more dominant the use of the mother tongue, the more positive the students' attitudes toward that language. IPB students of Class 62 showed positive attitudes towards their mother tongue, but remained adaptive to the use of national and international languages in the academic environment. This finding emphasizes the importance of preserving the mother tongue among students as part of preserving cultural identity and strengthening multilingual awareness. This study also recommends that campuses develop programs based on regional culture and language as a form of support for linguistic diversity in higher education. Abstract

This study examines Wawacan Perbu Kean Santang as a traditional Sundanese literary text that represents Islamic preaching through a cultural approach. The character Kean Santang in the wawacan is positioned as a symbolic figure who reflects the process of acculturation between Islamic teachings and Sundanese culture in the context of Islamization in West Java. This study aims to analyze the form, content, and strategies of Islamic preaching conveyed through the narrative and symbolic structure of the text. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a philological and cultural literary approach. The data consists of text excerpts containing Islamic preaching values, such as tauhid, akhlak, worship, and moral values. The results show that Islamic preaching in Wawacan Perbu Kean Santang is conveyed through symbolic narratives and heroic figures that are in harmony with the Sundanese way of life, thus enabling the peaceful acceptance of Islam without negating local traditions. This study confirms that wawacan functions not only as a literary work but also as a medium for preaching and a means of cultural acculturation in the process of locally based Islamization. Keywords: cultural acculturation, Islamic preaching, Kean Santang, Sundanese literature, wawacan

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the structure of the novel Rara Mendut by Y.B. Mangunwijaya based on Robert Stanton's theory and the development of the main character's personality through Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, and the data collection technique uses literature study. The results of this study indicate that Rara Mendut, as a steadfast character who resists coercion, reflects resistance to authority. The harmonious structure of the novel in terms of plot, characters, and setting reinforces this theme. Psychoanalytic analysis reveals a balance between natural drives (id) and social demands (superego) in Rara Mendut, indicating psychological maturity. Her conflicts are not only personal but also symbolic (such as cigarettes and the sea), representing resistance to an oppressive system. The study concludes that the main character is more influenced by the id than by external pressures. These findings emphasize the need for a multidisciplinary approach (structural and psychoanalytical) to understand the complexity of literature. Rara Mendut is not only an aesthetic work, but also a reflection of human psychological and social dynamics. Keywords: Personality Development, Psychoanalysis, Robert Stanton.

Abstract

In the history of Indonesian cinema, the most frequently produced type of film adaptation is the novel adaptation. This is because the public always wants new ways to enjoy existing creative works. An example of this is the adaptation of the novel Laskar Pelangi into a feature film of the same title, Laskar Pelangi. This article discusses the forms of change that occurred in the process of adapting Andrea Hirata's novel Laskar Pelangi into a film by Riri Riza. The focus of the study is on three main types of changes, namely abridgement, addition, and alteration. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a literature study approach, where data is collected from novels and films as comparative material. The results of the analysis show that the film underwent abridgement in several parts of the story, the addition of scenes not in the novel, and narrative changes, including alterations to the plot, characterization, and scenes from the novel to the film. This study is expected to provide insight into how adapting literary works into visual forms affects narrative and message delivery. Abstract

The significance of this writing lies in its exploration of the political process of the Indonesian language, a crucial step in making Indonesian an international language. Internationalizing Indonesians is a key area of study in our research. This qualitative descriptive research uses data collection techniques through a literature study. Indonesian language politics began: (1) in 1917, with the establishment of Balai Pustaka, (2) in 1928, through the Youth Pledge, (3) the First Indonesian Language Congress in 1938, (4) in 1945 through the 1945 Constitution to language regulations, (5) a series of II-XII Indonesian Language Congresses 1954-2023, (6) a series of changes in Indonesian spelling from Van Ophuijsen to the perfected spelling (EYD V) in 1901-2022, (7) The V Indonesian Language Congress (1988) initiated the process of internationalizing the Indonesian language through BIPA (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) until the formation of the APPBIPA organization. Our research has uncovered a unique connection: the internationalization of Indonesian is intricately linked to the transformation of Malay into Indonesian before the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Our research fills a significant gap in the literature. There has been no comprehensive study on the long journey of internationalization of the Indonesian language, from pre-independence to recognizing Indonesian as one of the languages of instruction at UNESCO. Abstract

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence, particularly ChatGPT, has significantly influenced higher education, especially in student academic writing activities. However, research specifically examining the relationship between ChatGPT dependency and student language literacy in preparing data analysis reports remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between dependency on ChatGPT usage and the language literacy of Statistics students in preparing data analysis reports. A quantitative approach with a survey strategy was employed. The population consisted of 265 active Statistics students at Universitas Negeri Medan from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts, with 66 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a digital questionnaire via Google Forms, measuring ChatGPT dependency (7 items) and language literacy (6 items) on a 4-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistical analysis and Pearson correlation tests were conducted using RStudio. The results showed that ChatGPT dependency was in the Agree category (mean = 2.70), with students demonstrating selective use by disagreeing with directly copying AI output (1.91). Language literacy was also in the Agree category (mean = 2.98), although confidence in independent writing remained low (2.62). The Pearson correlation test revealed no significant relationship between ChatGPT dependency and language literacy (r = -0.002; p = 0.9903 > 0.05). The study concludes that AI dependency does not inherently weaken language literacy, and educational efforts should focus on critical AI usage rather than prohibition. Keywords: ChatGPT dependency, language literacy, generative artificial intelligence, academic writing, Statistics students.
