Abstract

This study discusses changes in Indonesian language in modern communication and its implications for the younger generation. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through observation on social media (WhatsApp, Instagram, and Twitter) and interviews with 10 respondents aged 15-25 years. The results of the study indicate significant changes in four main aspects of language: phonology, morphology, lexical, and syntax. These changes are characterized by the use of foreign terms, abbreviations, and simplification of sentence structures that are dominant among the younger generation. The data shows that 60% of posts on social media use abbreviated phonological spelling, while 80% of respondents admitted to using abbreviations in daily conversations. The implications of this language change include positive impacts in the form of increased linguistic creativity and ease of cross-cultural communication, as well as negative impacts in the form of decreased ability to speak standard Indonesian and the potential for the erosion of national language identity. The conclusion of this study confirms that language change in modern communication is natural but has the potential to reduce formal language skills if not balanced with good language education and literacy. Efforts to preserve the Indonesian language require serious attention through formal education and campaigns on social media to maintain the existence of the national language amidst the flow of globalization.

Abstract

Abstract

Globalization in the 21st century has significantly impacted language use in Indonesia, particularly through the dominance of English as the global lingua franca. This phenomenon provides broader access to knowledge and international communication but simultaneously poses serious challenges to the status and function of the Indonesian language. This study employs a qualitative approach based on literature review, using a sociolinguistic framework and critical discourse analysis. The findings reveal the emergence of over 1,100 new loanwords, a high prevalence of code-mixing among younger generations—reaching up to 80%—and a noticeable shift in language attitudes among university students and urban communities who increasingly favor foreign terms. These findings suggest that the influx of foreign languages not only enriches the lexicon but also potentially undermines the role of Indonesian as a symbol of national identity and a medium of academic discourse. Therefore, firm language policies, the development of relevant and adaptive terminology, and the cultivation of collective awareness are essential to ensure the sustainability and strengthening of the Indonesian language as both a unifying language and a language of knowledge in the era of globalization.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology, particularly social media, has brought significant changes in the use of everyday language. Language development today is progressing rapidly alongside the increasing use of social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Generation Z, as a generation that has grown up with the advancement of social media, has experienced a shift in language patterns in daily life. Based on this issue, the research raises the following problems: (a) How is slang used by Generation Z on TikTok? (b) How does the use of slang on TikTok influence the changes in Indonesian vocabulary among Generation Z? (c) What is the impact of slang use on TikTok toward the changes in Indonesian grammar among Generation Z? This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection methods include observation and literature review. The use of slang by Generation Z shows that social media plays a crucial role in shaping the communication patterns of young people. First, the use of slang on TikTok is not merely a spontaneous expression but also becomes part of Generation Z’s digital identity. Slang appears in the form of abbreviations, acronyms, borrowed foreign terms, and the creation of new vocabulary, all of which function to strengthen the sense of togetherness and solidarity among members of online communities.

Abstract

Scientific writing is the main academic expression for students to convey ideas, research findings, and intellectual contributions. However, the quality of scientific papers often faces linguistic challenges, particularly in word choice (diction) and sentence construction. Inaccurate diction may lead to ambiguity, imprecise terminology, and an unprofessional impression. For instance, using the term “river water volume” instead of “river discharge” may reduce data validity and cause misunderstandings. In addition, lengthy and ineffective sentences hinder readers’ comprehension and contradict the characteristics of academic language, which should be concise, formal, and objective. This study employs a library research method by reviewing books, scientific articles, and language guidelines, as well as analyzing sample sentences from students’ academic writings. The findings reveal that accurate diction improves semantic precision, while effective sentences strengthen arguments and facilitate understanding. These results emphasize the importance of linguistic competence as a fundamental factor in academic writing. Students need to develop the habit of using academic vocabulary, conducting self-editing, and referring to references such as the KBBI and PUEBI, so that their scientific works not only meet formal requirements but also achieve high quality and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of learning through the utilization of digital technologies in Indonesian educational institutions. By adopting the literature study method, this study analyzes various scholarly sources to understand the dynamics of technology implementation in the pedagogical process. Findings show that digital technologies make a significant contribution in creating more interactive learning, expanding accessibility of information, as well as improving the quality of education. Nevertheless, various constraints are still faced, including infrastructural limitations, educators’ competence in utilizing technology, as well as budget constraints. To optimize the implementation of technology in learning, a comprehensive strategy is needed that includes the provision of adequate infrastructure, the capacity building of educators, as well as the formulation of policies that support the integration of technology in the education system.
