Abstract

In recent years, dialysis has become a routine procedure for millions of patients with advanced CKD, with estimates suggesting that more than 3 million people worldwide are undergoing dialysis. This surge has been attributed to lifestyle factors, an aging population, and the increasing incidence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are major risk factors for kidney dysfunction. One factor that is being investigated is coffee consumption as coffee consumption has increased dramatically in recent years. This scoping review aims to analyze research articles on the relationship between coffee consumption and kidney function. A total of 22 studies were identified during the database search. After excluding studies that did not meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 studies were obtained. After excluding studies that did not meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 10 studies were obtained. The study suggests that coffee consumption has a complex relationship with kidney health. The effects of coffee consumption also depend on the amount, pattern and time of consumption, coffee components, genetics, and environmental factors. While the results suggest potential for positive outcomes, more research is needed to specifically and deeply explore these relationships and their long-term effects on human health.

Abstract

The prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls is relatively high and is a health problem that continues into the reproductive period. Anemia in adolescent girls is thought to be related to menstrual patterns, diet, and lack of nutritional intake. This study aims to analyze the relationship between menstrual patterns, diet and nutritional adequacy to hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls at Kepanjen Islamic High School. This research method uses a correlation analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used is stratified sampling. The number of samples in this study was 56 female students. The instrument for collecting menstrual pattern data used a questionnaire, dietary data and nutritional adequacy used a semi-FFQ and hemoglobin level data used a portable hemoglobinometer. The results of the Spearman statistical test showed that there was a fairly strong and positive relationship between menstrual patterns (p value 0.000; r 0.815), diet (p value 0.000; r 0.629), energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and iron adequacy and hemoglobin levels. The conclusion of this study is that the better the menstrual patterns, diet and iron adequacy in adolescent girls will reduce the risk of anemia.

Abstract

Anemia remains a public health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia. A 2023 national survey reported that 15.5% of adolescents aged 15–24 years experience anemia. Knowledge and compliance with iron supplementation remain low, while conventional education methods are often perceived as less engaging by adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Aoksigame Card on improving adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices in preventing anemia. A quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design was conducted on 62 tenth-grade female students from two high schools in Yogyakarta, selected using simple random sampling. The intervention group received education using the Aoksigame Card, while the control group received PowerPoint slide education. Data on knowledge, attitudes, and practices were collected before and after the intervention using a validated and reliable questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS with a significance level of p<0.05. The intervention group showed a significant improvement in knowledge (p=0.003), but not in attitudes (p=0.276) or practices (p=0.083). Intergroup comparison showed a significant difference in knowledge (p=0.017), but not in attitudes (p=0.956) or practices (p=0.232). Aoksigame Card is effective in increasing adolescents’ knowledge of anemia.

Abstract

Overweight and obesity in adolescents are global public health challenges, including in Indonesia. These conditions are associated with various physical and mental health risks, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, low self-esteem, and depression. As the use of social media among adolescents increases, so does concern about its impact on eating behavior, physical activity, and body perception. However, understanding of how social media influences adolescents' nutritional status based on gender remains limited. This study is a scoping review aimed at mapping the scientific evidence related to the influence of social media use on overweight and obesity in adolescents, taking gender differences into account. Literature searches were conducted through the PubMed and Scopus databases, yielding 650 articles, with five studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The review results showed that social media use is correlated with increased BMI in both male and female adolescents through different mechanisms. In females, social pressure and cyberbullying contribute to unhealthy eating patterns. Meanwhile, in males, high social media use is associated with insufficient sleep and a sedentary lifestyle. Other sedentary activities such as watching TV and playing video games further exacerbate the risk of obesity. These findings emphasize the importance of a gender-based approach in obesity prevention interventions for adolescents in the digital era.

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a common degenerative disease among the elderly that increases fracture risk and ranks among the top 10 global degenerative conditions according to WHO. This study reviews evidence on the effectiveness of calcium-rich milk and dairy products in preventing osteoporosis in older adults. This is a review was conducted using purposive sampling of journal articles from 2008 to 2022 from Google Scholar. Studies were evaluated based on Elwood’s framework, focusing on evidence description, internal and external validity, and biological plausibility. As a result, all articles confirmed calcium’s role in bone formation and maintenance. Two review articles highlighted the importance of calcium and vitamin D for bone health, particularly in specific groups like long-term corticosteroid users and older adults with mineral imbalances; however, they lacked empirical data and statistical analysis. Two cross-sectional studies showed associations between calcium intake and improved bone mineral density or reduced osteoporosis risk, but limitations such as uncontrolled confounders and incomplete statistics reduce confidence in these findings. No longitudinal or randomized controlled trials were identified to establish causality or dose-response relationships. Although calcium is essential for bone health, current evidence is insufficient to conclusively support calcium-fortified milk as an effective intervention to prevent osteoporosis in the elderly. Further longitudinal and randomized controlled studies are necessary to provide robust data to inform public health policies. As an immediate step, health practitioners should promote a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D alongside lifestyle modifications such as regular weight-bearing exercise to support bone health in older adults.

Abstract

No matter your socioeconomic status, you're sure to find instant noodles on the menu. The Indonesian people have a strong preference for noodles. The World Instant Noodle Association (WINA) reports that, after only China and India, Indonesia has the highest demand for instant noodles globally. Noodles that are less harmful to the body have been the subject of several research and development initiatives. To make sure that noodles get all the nutrients they need, researchers are considering adding nutrient-rich soy bean flour. The research strategy used in this study is a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) trial with three treatments and three iterations. Analysis of variance and Duncan's test for additional significance were used to those data. The addition of soy bean flour to dragon fruit instant noodles did not significantly alter their color, scent, taste, or texture, according to organoleptic test findings (P Value> 0.05). Adding soy bean flour to dragon fruit instant noodles did not significantly change their protein or carbohydrate content in the proximate test. The actual impact on the contents of water, ash, fat, and fiber is shown by a P Value less than 0.05. Dragon fruit instant noodles preserved using soy bean flour retain all of their original color, flavor, fragrance, texture, protein, and carbohydrate content. The amounts of water, ash, fat, and fiber are all significantly altered, however.
