Abstract

Industrial activities around the Lubuk Begalung rubber factory in Padang City pose risks to air quality, raising community concerns about health and comfort. This study aimed to evaluate air quality and analyze local perceptions of pollution caused by factory operations. A quantitative survey with purposive sampling was conducted among 75 residents living within a 2 km radius of the factory for at least two years. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed descriptively using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Relationships between perceived air quality and pollution impacts were examined using Spearman or Pearson correlation. Findings revealed that 60% of respondents frequently detected strong odors during production hours, while 55% reported mild respiratory problems, including coughing and throat irritation. Statistical analysis indicated a significant correlation between odor intensity and health complaints (rs = 0.62; p < 0.01). In addition, 70% of respondents felt a decline in environmental comfort, which was also significantly related to health complaints (rs = 0.58; p < 0.01). These results confirm that factory emissions negatively affect both physical and psychological well-being of nearby residents. The study emphasizes the need for stricter emission monitoring, adoption of environmentally friendly technologies, and stronger community involvement in environmental surveillance. Collaboration among industry, government, and local communities is essential to maintain air quality and minimize long-term health impacts.

Abstract

Plastic waste management remains a major challenge in maintaining environmental cleanliness and reducing ecosystem impacts. Community perception and active participation are essential for successful waste management at the local level. Objective: This study aims to assess public perception and participation in plastic waste management in RT 04 RW III Anduring, Padang. Methods: A descriptive survey was conducted with 50 respondents through questionnaires and direct interviews. Results: The majority of respondents (72%) had a positive perception of plastic waste management, but only 42% were actively involved beyond household-level collection and sorting. This indicates a gap between awareness and actual behavior. Implications: Strengthening environmental education and providing adequate facilities are needed to enhance participation. Conclusion: Positive perception is an important foundation, but without structural support and sustained motivation, community participation in sustainable waste management will remain limited.

Abstract

The implementation of Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) in primary schools is a strategic step in shaping students’ character to care about cleanliness and environmental health. However, student behavior in maintaining school hygiene is often not optimal due to limited understanding and awareness of PHBS. Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of PHBS education on student behavior in maintaining environmental cleanliness at SD Anduring, Padang. Method: A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was applied. The sample consisted of 50 students from grades IV and V selected purposively. Instruments used were validated questionnaires and observation sheets to measure changes in student behavior before and after education. The PHBS intervention was conducted through interactive counseling, including lectures, handwashing practice demonstrations, and audiovisual media, delivered in two sessions over two weeks. Results: Findings showed a significant improvement in hygiene behaviors such as proper waste disposal, classroom cleaning, and participation in environmental hygiene activities, with a significance value of p < 0.05. Implications: These results indicate that PHBS education is effective in increasing students’ awareness and responsibility toward the school environment and can be integrated into thematic learning and extracurricular activities. Conclusion: PHBS education has a positive and significant effect on student behavior in maintaining school cleanliness at SD Anduring Padang and is feasible to be developed as part of school culture.

Abstract

Temporary Disposal Sites (TPS) play an important role in urban waste management, but their proximity to residential areas can trigger environmental and health problems. The TPS at Belakang Tangsi, Padang Barat, is directly adjacent to a densely populated settlement, making it a critical case to study. This research assessed its impact on environmental health using a quantitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observations, questionnaires from 75 residents, and interviews with sanitation workers and local officials. Descriptive statistics and relational analysis were applied to evaluate community perceptions and health concerns. Findings show that most residents reported foul odors, increased flies and rodents, and reduced comfort, with 68% experiencing direct disturbances and 53% expressing health concerns. These results highlight that poorly managed TPS near settlements not only degrade sanitation but also raise psychosocial stress and disease risk. The novelty of this study lies in documenting the specific impacts of an urban TPS located within dense residential areas, providing evidence for the urgent need to improve management, strengthen community-based waste sorting, and reconsider TPS placement in urban planning.

Abstract

Community-based Total Sanitation (STBM) is a national approach to improving sanitation and public health through behavioral change. However, evidence on its effectiveness in shaping clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS) remains limited. Objective: This study evaluates the effectiveness of the STBM program in changing PHBS in a community intervention area. Methods: A mixed-methods design was applied. Quantitative data were collected from 150 respondents using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires and analyzed with paired t-tests. Qualitative data were obtained from in-depth interviews with community leaders and health workers and analyzed thematically. Results: Handwashing with soap increased from 58% to 82% (p < 0.01), the use of healthy latrines rose from 70% to 85% (p < 0.05), and household waste management improved from 62% to 76% (p = 0.06). Interviews revealed growing awareness of sanitation and environmental health, supported by active roles of health cadres and local leaders. Implications: These findings confirm that STBM is effective as a community-based strategy for behavior change, highlighting the importance of continuous education, participatory implementation, and integration with local development programs. Conclusion: STBM has a positive and significant impact on PHBS, and its sustainability depends on community participation and local government support.

Abstract

This study evaluated the association between exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) due to deforestation and forest fires and the risk of respiratory disorders in local communities in Kalimantan, Indonesia. A mixed-methods design with an observational epidemiological approach was used to evaluate the impact of exposure to PM2.5 on acute respiratory infections (ARI), asthma exacerbations, and community lung function. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of respiratory diseases and socioeconomic factors influencing exposure levels. Field measurements of PM2.5 both indoors and outdoors were used to estimate population exposure based on time-activity and indoor/outdoor ratios. Results showed that outdoor workers had an average exposure of 156.3 g/m3-hour, significantly higher than indoor workers, and this difference was significant (p  0.001). Indoor workers had a mean exposure of 88.5 l/hr, and the difference was statistically significant. The regression model showed that every 10 m3 increase in PM2.5 increased the odds of ARI by 11% (OR=1.11, 95%CI: 1.06-1.17). This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening the air quality monitoring system, health early warning, and stricter land use regulations to improve community resilience to future recurring haze events.

Abstract

Fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) air pollution has long been identified as a crucial contributor to cardiovascular diseases in big cities with high air emissions like Jakarta. Long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ can trigger systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and accelerated atherosclerosis, thereby potentially increasing the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). This research aims to identify the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) from long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ among those aged 40–60 years and verify the hypothesis that higher concentrations of PM₂.₅ are related to higher incidences of MACE and values of CVD biomarkers. This longitudinal study involved 2,000 respondents aged 40–60 with more than three years of residence in Jakarta, selected via multistage sampling. PM₂.₅ exposure was estimated annually according to residence location. Analysis used Cox proportional hazards models to assess MACE risk and linear mixed-effects models for biomarker changes. Results showed exposure variation between tertiles (12–42 µg/m³) with a strong dose–response pattern; the highest exposure group had four times higher incidence of MACE than the lowest tertile. Exposure was also linked to increased blood pressure, LDL, hs-CRP, HbA1c, and accelerated CIMT thickening. These findings have significant implications for air quality management policies to minimize cardiovascular risk in sensitive age groups. Overall, this study highlights the urgent need to reduce PM₂.₅ concentrations as a preventive measure against CVD in densely populated metropolitan areas.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the relationship between marine pollution exposure levels and the risk of gastrointestinal health disorders in coastal fishing communities in Semarang City, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to October 2025 in the Tambaklorok and Tanjung Emas areas, which are areas with high seafood consumption patterns and exposure to marine environments. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire covering respondent characteristics, seafood consumption habits, and gastrointestinal complaints using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS). All respondents (100%) tested positive for microplastic exposure in feces with an average concentration of 18.4  6.7 particles/gram, dominated by PE, PP, and PS polymers, as well as heavy metal levels (Hg, Pb, Cd) through AAS or ICP-MS. Microplastics were the strongest predictor of increased GSRS scores (=0.37, p0.001), followed by blood mercury levels and inadequate sanitation conditions, with the model able to explain 43-47% of the variation in symptoms. This research fills a gap in the literature regarding marine pollution risk in Indonesia and provides a scientific basis for developing environmental health policies, coastal waste management, and more targeted public health intervention programs for fishing communities.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains one of the most significant public health challenges in tropical and subtropical regions, including Indonesia. This study uses a quantitative approach with an analytical observational design, combined with mathematical modeling and spatial analysis to understand the spread of dengue fever after the Jakarta floods in Jakarta. Specifically, this study utilizes a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map the distribution of DHF cases before and after the floods, and applies differential-based epidemiological models such as SEIR or modified SIR to describe transmission dynamics influenced by post-flood environmental conditions, particularly waterlogging, rainfall, humidity, and demographic factors such as population density. Descriptive and correlational findings indicate that high rainfall, increased humidity, extensive inundation index, and extensive humidity are consistently associated with increased DHF incidence. Moreover, the results of this study provide a scientific basis for public health policy planning and disaster mitigation, particularly in dense, flood-prone urban settings like Jakarta.

Abstract

Climate change is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in tropical and subtropical countries. In Indonesia, Papua is one of the provinces with a high malaria burden. However, there is limited empirical evidence on the relationship between climate and malaria in coastal areas. This study used an ecological-epidemiological study design with quantitative approach to analyze the relationships between climate variables and malaria incidence in coastal regions. The results showed that changes in climate variables significantly influence malaria incidence. Wind speed and sunshine duration were the most dominant and consistent factors influencing malaria incidence, in both linear and non-linear relationships. The GAM model provided the highest predictive performance compared to the GLM. The findings of this study imply that malaria early warning systems and climate change adaptation strategies require more flexible modeling approaches and the inclusion of non-conventional climate variables. This research also reinforces the need for the integration of climate and ecological data in public health policies, particularly in highly vulnerable coastal areas like papua.
